Chapter 10: The Brother Who Was Never Family
Calvin’s smile was the most painful thing I had seen all day.
Not because it looked evil.
Not because it looked like a villain from a story.
Because it looked familiar.
It was the same smile he gave Lily when he brought her ice cream after school.
The same smile he gave me when he told me I was doing a good job as a father.
The same smile I trusted.
And now he was standing in my wedding chapel, watching everything fall apart.
“Uncle Cal,” Lily whispered.
Calvin’s expression softened.
For a second, he looked like the man I knew.
Then it disappeared.
“Hey, sweetheart.””
I immediately stepped in front of her.
“Don’t.””
His eyes moved to me.
“Marcus.””
The way he said my name made my stomach twist.
Like he was disappointed.
Like I was the one who had done something wrong.
“How long?”” I asked.
He tilted his head.
“How long what?””
“How long have you been lying to me?””
Silence.
Calvin looked around the chapel.
At Vanessa.
At Andre.
At Richard.
Then back at me.
“You always were emotional.””
My jaw tightened.
“Answer me.””
He sighed.
“Years.””
That one word hurt more than I expected.
Years.
Not days.
Not weeks.
Years.
I felt Lily’s hand holding mine.
I looked down at her.
Her little face was full of confusion.
She didn’t understand why someone she loved was suddenly someone to fear.
I hated that.
I hated that she had to learn this.
“Why?”” I asked.
Calvin walked farther into the chapel.
“Because you were never supposed to have everything.””
Nobody spoke.
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
He laughed quietly.
“You had the perfect life, Marcus.””
I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“Perfect?””
“Yes.””
He pointed toward me.
“You had the house. The career. The daughter. Everyone loved you.””
My eyes narrowed.
“So this was jealousy?””
His expression hardened.
“No.””
A pause.
“It was fairness.””
The word made me sick.
“Fairness?””
Calvin looked at Vanessa.
“You know exactly what I mean.””
Vanessa stepped back.
“I never wanted this.””
Calvin laughed.
“Don’t pretend you’re innocent.””
I looked between them.
“You two worked together?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Calvin answered at the same time.
“Yes.””
The contradiction hung in the air.
Richard looked at Vanessa.
“Which is it?””
She closed her eyes.
“I worked with him before.””
My chest tightened.
“You told me Daniel was the only one.””
“I thought he was.””
Calvin smiled.
“You still don’t understand.””
I turned toward him.
“Understand what?””
He walked closer.
“That Vanessa was never the mastermind.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Stop.””
Calvin ignored her.
“She was scared. Daniel was angry. But me?””
He tapped his chest.
“I was patient.””
My stomach turned.
“You planned this.””
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked everyone.
Even Vanessa.
“Why Lily?””
Calvin looked at her.
“Because Lily was the key.””
My voice dropped.
“She’s a child.””
“She’s an asset.””
The second he said it, something inside me snapped.
I moved forward.
Richard grabbed my arm.
“Marcus.””
Because I knew what I wanted to do.
I wanted to forget everything.
I wanted to stop being reasonable.
But Lily was watching.
And I couldn’t become someone she feared.
So I stayed still.
“What key?”” I asked.
Calvin smiled.
“The trust.””
Richard stepped forward.
“You knew about the inheritance.””
“Of course.””
“And you manipulated custody arrangements to access it.””
Calvin shrugged.
“Manipulated is a strong word.””
Vanessa looked disgusted.
“You used me.””
He looked at her.
“You let me.””
Her face changed.
That hurt her more than anything.
Because she knew there was truth in it.
“I trusted you,” she whispered.
Calvin laughed.
“You trusted everyone.””
Then he looked at me.
“That was always your problem too.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
“You believe people are good because you need them to be.””
The words cut.
Because they were almost true.
I had trusted him.
I had trusted Vanessa.
I had trusted the wrong people because I wanted my family to be whole.
But I looked at Lily.
And I knew one thing.
I would never make that mistake again.
“You’re not taking her.””
Calvin smiled.
“You still don’t get it.””
He pulled a document from his coat.
My heart sank.
Not another document.
He held it up.
“This is why Vanessa needed you to sign.””
Richard stepped closer.
His expression changed.
“Where did you get that?””
Calvin looked at him.
“You know exactly where.””
Richard went quiet.
I looked at him.
“Richard?””
He didn’t answer.
My chest tightened.
“Richard.””
Finally, he spoke.
“I made the first draft.””
Everyone froze.
“What?””
Richard looked ashamed.
“I didn’t know Calvin was involved.””
Calvin smiled.
“But you helped build the door.””
Richard looked away.
“I thought I was protecting Lily.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
Nobody spoke.
Because they all knew.
That phrase had become an excuse.
Calvin folded the document.
“The difference between all of you and me is simple.””
He looked at Lily.
“I’m honest about what I want.””
I stepped closer.
“You want money.””
“No.””
He smiled.
“I want control.””
The chapel went silent.
Then the police sirens sounded outside.
Everyone turned.
Calvin’s smile disappeared.
For the first time, he looked surprised.
Richard looked at me.
“You called them?””
I shook my head.
“I didn’t.””
Calvin slowly looked toward the entrance.
The doors opened.
A detective walked inside.
May you like
And behind him was someone I never expected to see.
Someone carrying evidence that would finally explain what happened seven years ago.
