Chapter 3: The Signature She Needed
I didn’t sign anything that day.
I didn’t even know what I was holding.
But I knew one thing.
Vanessa had planned for that paper to be in my hands before I walked down the aisle.
That alone was enough to make me afraid.
I sat in the empty side room of the chapel with Lily beside me while guests slowly moved outside.
The wedding decorations were still perfect.
The flowers were still beautiful.
The candles were still burning.
But everything felt fake.
Like the chapel itself was pretending nothing had happened.
Lily rested her head against my shoulder.
“Daddy?””
“Yeah, baby?””
“Are you mad at me?””
My heart broke.
I turned toward her.
“Why would I be mad at you?””
“Because the wedding stopped.””
I held her face gently.
“Listen to me. A wedding can happen again.””
Her eyes watered.
“But I only have one daddy.””
I pulled her into my arms.
“I’m always your daddy.””
A knock came at the door.
It was Nia.
She stepped inside carefully.
“Marcus, Vanessa wants to talk.””
I looked at her.
“Where?””
“She’s outside.””
I stood.
Lily grabbed my hand.
I looked down.
“You can come with me.””
We walked back into the chapel.
Vanessa was standing alone near the altar.
Her wedding dress looked perfect.
Almost too perfect.
Like she was still trying to hold onto the image of the woman everyone thought she was.
“Marcus,” she said.
I stopped several feet away.
“What was that document?””
She looked at Lily.
Then back at me.
“You read it?””
“I asked what it was.””
She took a breath.
“I was trying to protect our future.””
“That’s not an answer.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“You don’t trust me.””
“I trusted you enough to bring you into my daughter’s life.””
That made her look away.
For a moment, she seemed hurt.
Then her expression changed.
“Marcus, you don’t understand everything.””
“Then help me understand.””
She stepped closer.
“I needed you to make a decision.””
“What decision?””
She didn’t answer.
That was the problem.
Every time I asked a question, she gave me a different emotion.
Anger.
Fear.
Frustration.
Anything except the truth.
Lily moved closer to me.
Vanessa noticed.
Her face softened for only a second.
Then she said:
“Marcus, sometimes parents have to make difficult choices.””
I stared at her.
“Don’t talk about parenting like you understand what you just did.””
Her expression hardened.
“You think I’m the villain.””
“I think my daughter was crying at a door with a suitcase.””
Silence.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“I never wanted to hurt her.””
“But you were willing to.””
She looked away.
The chapel doors opened.
A few guests who had stayed behind entered slowly.
Among them was Vanessa’s sister, Camille.
She looked nervous.
Too nervous.
“Vanessa,” Camille said quietly.
Vanessa turned.
“What are you doing here?””
Camille looked at me.
Then at Lily.
“I think Marcus deserves to know.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“Camille, don’t.””
My eyes moved between them.
“Know what?””
Camille swallowed.
“I saw the papers.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Stop talking.””
“No.””
Camille shook her head.
“You’ve gone too far.””
The air changed.
Vanessa’s voice became sharp.
“Leave.””
Camille didn’t move.
“What were you going to make him sign?””
My heart started pounding.
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked trapped.
For the first time, she had nowhere to hide.
“Marcus,” Camille said, “that document wasn’t about the wedding.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Camille.””
“It was about Lily.””
The room went silent again.
I looked down at my daughter.
Then back at Vanessa.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Camille looked at the paper still in my hand.
“You need to read the second page.””
My fingers tightened around the document.
“There’s a second page?””
Vanessa suddenly moved.
Fast.
She reached toward me.
But this time I stepped back.
“No.””
Her hand stopped in the air.
“Marcus, please.””
That word frightened me more than anger.
Because Vanessa had never begged before.
I looked at the document.
Then slowly turned the page.
The second page was hidden underneath the first.
A single paragraph was visible.
My eyes moved across the words.
And then I saw the sentence that made my entire body go cold.
Before I could finish reading, Lily pointed toward the chapel entrance.
“Daddy…”
I looked up.
Someone was standing there.
Someone who wasn’t supposed to be at my wedding.
Someone holding another copy of the same document.
May you like
And he said Vanessa’s name like he had known her secret for a very long time.
“Vanessa… you didn’t tell him everything.””
