Chapter 2: The Promise I Made to My Daughter
The chapel had never felt so quiet.
Only minutes earlier, it had been filled with laughter, music, and people taking pictures of a beautiful wedding.
Now everyone was staring at me.
At Lily.
At Vanessa.
At the note in my hand.
I had spent years believing the hardest moment of my life was losing Lily’s mother.
I was wrong.
The hardest moment was realizing someone I trusted might have been planning to take my daughter away from me.
I carried Lily away from the center of the aisle and sat with her near the front row.
She refused to let go of my hand.
Nia stood nearby, still holding the pink suitcase.
Vanessa remained near the altar, breathing heavily.
“Marcus, you’re misunderstanding this,” she said.
I looked at her.
“Then explain.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
That silence told me more than any words could.
“Vanessa,” I said, “why was my daughter holding a note telling her to leave?””
She looked toward the guests.
“This isn’t the place.””
“You made it this place when you put that note in her hands.””
Her jaw tightened.
“That’s not what happened.””
Lily looked up at me.
“Daddy…”
I turned immediately.
“What is it, baby?””
Her fingers squeezed mine.
“She told me I had to be brave.””
My chest tightened.
“Who told you?””
Lily looked afraid to answer.
I lowered myself to her level.
“You can tell me.””
She looked toward Vanessa.
“Vanessa.””
A few guests gasped.
Vanessa shook her head.
“That’s not true.””
Lily’s eyes filled with tears.
“She said you were going to be happier if I wasn’t there.””
The words hit harder than the note.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You told my daughter that?””
“No,” Vanessa snapped.
Then she stopped herself.
Her expression changed.
Like she realized she had reacted too quickly.
Nia stepped forward.
“I saw Vanessa near the dressing room this morning.””
Vanessa turned sharply.
“Nia, don’t.””
The coordinator looked uncomfortable but continued.
“You asked me to take Lily’s suitcase to the exit.””
My face went still.
“You asked her to?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Marcus, listen.””
“No.””
My voice surprised even me.
“No, I’m listening to everyone except the person who should have protected my daughter.””
Vanessa walked closer.
“Do you think I wanted to hurt her?””
I stared at her.
“I think you wanted something.””
Her eyes flickered.
Just for a second.
But I saw it.
“What was in that second note?”” I asked.
Vanessa looked away.
“I don’t know.””
“You tried to grab it.””
“I was trying to stop you from making a scene.””
“A scene?””
I laughed quietly.
“My daughter was crying at the exit with a suitcase.””
The guests looked away.
Some looked embarrassed.
Some looked angry.
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“Marcus, we need to talk privately.””
“No.””
She froze.
“I said no.””
Lily leaned against me.
I put my arm around her.
“Whatever this is, you don’t get to separate us to explain it.””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“You’re making a mistake.””
I looked down at Lily.
Then back at Vanessa.
“The mistake was believing love meant someone automatically loved my child too.””
The room stayed silent.
Then Vanessa walked away.
Not toward the exit.
Toward the bridal room.
That bothered me.
Because she didn’t look defeated.
She looked determined.
I followed her.
Nia grabbed my arm.
“Marcus.””
I turned.
“She left something behind.””
“What?””
Nia looked at the pink suitcase.
“When I found Lily, she wasn’t just holding the note.””
She opened a small pocket inside the suitcase.
“There was something else hidden here.””
My heart started racing.
“What?””
Nia pulled out a small envelope.
My name was written on the front.
Marcus.
My hands went numb.
I took it from her.
“Did Lily know about this?””
Nia shook her head.
“No.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
Not a note this time.
A document.
The first line made my stomach drop.
I read it again.
Then again.
Because I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.
Lily tugged my sleeve.
“Daddy, what is it?””
I looked at my daughter.
Then at the bridal room door where Vanessa had disappeared.
The document had my name at the bottom.
