Chapter 8: The Memory Hidden Away
The sound of the locks clicking echoed through the chapel.
One by one.
Every door.
Every exit.
Locked.
Lily grabbed my arm.
“Daddy?””
I immediately pulled her close.
“It’s okay.””
But my voice didn’t sound convincing.
Because for the first time that day, I didn’t know if it was okay.
Nia checked the side doors.
“They won’t open.””
Richard pulled out his phone.
“No signal.””
Andre walked toward the windows.
“Someone planned this.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked like she had been expecting it.
Not exactly.
But close.
“You knew this could happen.””
She looked down.
“I was afraid.””
I stepped closer.
“You should have been honest.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You were trying to control the situation.””
She looked hurt.
But she didn’t argue.
Because she knew I was right.
A sound came from the chapel speakers.
Everyone froze.
Static.
Then a voice.
“Vanessa.””
Her face turned white.
I recognized fear.
Real fear.
Not guilt.
Not embarrassment.
Fear.
The voice continued.
“You always were terrible at following instructions.””
Vanessa whispered:
“Daniel.””
Andre looked furious.
“Turn it off.””
Richard searched the walls.
“Find the source.””
Daniel laughed through the speakers.
“You brought everyone together. That’s impressive.””
My grip tightened around Lily.
“Show yourself.””
A pause.
Then:
“Marcus.””
Hearing my name from him made my skin crawl.
“You’re probably wondering why your perfect wedding became a disaster.””
Nobody spoke.
“You should thank Vanessa.””
I looked at her.
Daniel continued.
“She delayed everything.””
Vanessa shouted:
“Stop!””
The speaker crackled.
“You don’t get to decide when this ends.””
I stepped forward.
“What do you want?””
Silence.
Then:
“The same thing I always wanted.””
The voice became colder.
“Control.””
Lily buried her face against me.
I covered her ears.
Daniel continued.
“But she made a mistake.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“She thought she could hide Lily from me.””
The room went still.
Andre moved forward.
“You stay away from her.””
Daniel laughed.
“There he is.””
Andre froze.
“The father who disappeared.””
Andre’s face tightened.
“I didn’t disappear.””
“You left.””
“I was forced out.””
The silence after those words was sharp.
I looked at Andre.
Forced out?
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“You don’t understand.””
“No,” I said.
“I don’t.””
Daniel’s voice returned.
“That’s because nobody has told you the whole story.””
I stared at the speaker.
“Then tell me.””
Vanessa immediately said:
“Marcus, don’t listen.””
But I was tired of not knowing.
“Tell me.””
Daniel laughed quietly.
“Good.””
A pause.
“Seven years ago, Lily witnessed something.””
My heart stopped.
I looked down at her.
She was trembling.
“What?””
Daniel continued.
“She saw what happened.””
Vanessa whispered:
“Enough.””
“She saw what I did.””
The room went silent.
I felt my body go cold.
“What did you do?””
No answer.
Then Daniel said:
“Ask Vanessa why she changed Lily’s last name.””
I turned.
“What?””
Vanessa looked away.
My voice rose.
“Vanessa.””
She whispered:
“Marcus…”
“Why?””
She looked at Lily.
Then at me.
“Because I was trying to hide her.””
“From him?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I thought I could handle it.””
I shook my head.
“You thought you could handle a dangerous man alone?””
Her eyes filled.
“I thought if I brought you into it, he would come after you too.””
I looked at Lily.
“And instead you pushed my daughter away.””
She broke.
Just for a second.
“I was scared.””
Those words were the first honest thing she had said.
But they didn’t erase what happened.
The speaker crackled again.
Daniel’s voice returned.
“You know what the funny thing is, Marcus?””
I looked up.
“You’re angry at Vanessa.””
A pause.
“But she’s the only reason Lily is alive.””
Nobody spoke.
The words hung there.
Alive.
I looked at Vanessa.
“What does he mean?””
She didn’t answer.
Daniel continued.
“Tell him.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I can’t.””
“Tell him.””
Her voice broke.
“Marcus…”
I waited.
She looked at Lily.
Then whispered:
“Lily was never supposed to survive.””
My entire body froze.
“What?””
Vanessa’s tears fell.
“Daniel tried to make sure she didn’t.””
The room went silent.
Andre covered his mouth.
Richard looked down.
And Lily asked the question that destroyed me.
“Daddy…”
I looked at her.
“Why did someone want me gone?””
I had no answer.
None.
Then the chapel speakers went silent.
The locks clicked again.
This time, the doors opened.
A phone was lying on the floor outside.
A video was playing.
Richard picked it up.
The screen showed a recording from seven years ago.
A younger Vanessa.
A baby Lily.
And Daniel.
Then the video revealed something I never expected.
A second person was standing in the room with them.
May you like
Someone I knew.
Someone who had been part of my life all along.
