Chapter 12: The Truth Lily’s Mother Left Behind
Nobody spoke after Calvin’s words.
The truth about Lily’s mother.
Those words stayed in the air.
Seven years.
Seven years of questions.
Seven years of wondering if I could have done something differently.
Seven years of raising Lily while carrying a pain I never talked about.
And now someone was standing in front of me claiming he knew the answer.
I looked at Calvin.
“Say it.””
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“Marcus, don’t.””
I turned toward her.
“Why?””
She looked devastated.
“Because some truths hurt.””
I looked at Lily.
“She deserves the truth.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“She’s too young.””
“She’s seven.””
I held Lily’s hand.
“But she’s been carrying fear that adults put on her.””
Nobody argued.
Because everyone knew.
Detective Harris looked at Calvin.
“You’re going to explain everything.””
Calvin smiled.
“Not without a deal.””
The detective’s expression hardened.
“You’re in no position to negotiate.””
Calvin laughed.
“You still need the missing evidence.””
Richard stepped forward.
“What evidence?””
Calvin looked at him.
“The original recording.””
Everyone froze.
Rachel’s face changed.
“You don’t have it.””
Calvin smiled.
“I do.””
My stomach dropped.
“What recording?””
Calvin looked at me.
“The recording of Lily’s mother discovering the truth.””
Vanessa covered her face.
“No.””
I turned.
“You know about this?””
She didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
My voice became quiet.
“How much did you know?””
Vanessa cried.
“I knew there was a recording.””
“And?””
“I thought it was destroyed.””
Calvin laughed.
“That was always your mistake.””
He looked at me.
“You believed things disappeared because you wanted them to.””
Detective Harris stepped forward.
“Where is it?””
Calvin smiled.
“Safe.””
I looked at him.
“You’ve spent seven years hiding evidence.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His expression changed.
For the first time, I saw something real.
Not greed.
Not anger.
Obsession.
“Because your daughter’s mother figured out what we were doing.””
We.
The word mattered.
“You and Daniel.””
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
“And Vanessa?””
Calvin looked at her.
“She found out later.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I tried to fix it.””
“You tried to hide it.””
“I tried to save Lily.””
Calvin laughed.
“Too late.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Did Lily’s mother know about the trust?””
Vanessa nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“And she was trying to protect Lily.””
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“So she wasn’t running away.””
Vanessa started crying.
“No.””
That answer broke something inside me.
Because for years, I had wondered if Lily’s mother left because she didn’t want us.
But she didn’t leave.
She was taken away.
Rachel stepped closer.
“She found out Daniel and Calvin planned to use Lily’s trust.””
My eyes moved toward Calvin.
“And they tried to stop her.””
Nobody spoke.
The detective looked at Calvin.
“Where is the recording?””
Calvin smiled.
“You really want to know?””
“Yes.””
He looked at me.
“Then Marcus has to hear it first.””
I stepped forward.
“Play it.””
Calvin studied me.
“You’re sure?””
“Yes.””
A long pause.
Then he pulled out a small device.
He pressed a button.
Static filled the chapel.
Then a woman’s voice.
Lily’s mother.
My breath stopped.
I hadn’t heard her voice in seven years.
“Marcus…”
My knees almost gave out.
Lily looked at me.
“That’s Mommy?””
I nodded.
Tears filled my eyes.
The recording continued.
“If you’re hearing this, something happened.””
A pause.
Her voice shook.
“I need you to know one thing.””
The entire chapel listened.
“I never left you.””
I closed my eyes.
The pain I had buried for years came rushing back.
Her voice continued.
“I was trying to protect Lily.””
Calvin looked uncomfortable.
The recording played on.
“And if anything happens to me, don’t trust the people closest to you.””
Everyone looked at Calvin.
Then Vanessa.
Then Richard.
The recording continued.
“The person who betrayed us is someone Marcus loves.””
My heart stopped.
A final sentence played.
A sentence that changed everything.
“I found out the truth about Lily’s father.””
Andre froze.
I looked at him.
The recording continued.
“And Marcus…”
A pause.
“You need to know…”
The audio cut out.
Static.
Silence.
Everyone waited.
Calvin smiled.
Because he knew what was coming.
Then the recording restarted.
A different voice appeared.
A voice I recognized.
A voice that made Andre step backward.
Because it belonged to Lily’s mother.
May you like
And she said:
“Marcus, Andre is not Lily’s biological father.””
