Chapter 5: The Secret Behind Lily’s Name
Nobody moved after Richard said those words.
The person who created it.
But that was impossible.
The way he said it made my skin crawl.
Not because he sounded confused.
Because he sounded afraid.
I looked at Vanessa.
She wasn’t looking at me anymore.
She was looking at Richard.
Like she knew exactly what he meant.
“Vanessa,” I said.
She didn’t answer.
“Look at me.””
Slowly, she did.
And I saw something I had never seen before.
Fear.
Not guilt.
Not anger.
Fear.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
She swallowed.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“No more protecting secrets.””
Richard moved toward the window and answered his phone.
“Yes, I’m here.””
Everyone watched him.
The chapel was almost empty now. The guests who remained stood quietly near the back, pretending they weren’t listening.
Nobody wanted to leave.
Not after seeing a wedding collapse in real time.
Richard’s voice became lower.
“I understand.””
A pause.
Then:
“Send me the file.””
He ended the call.
I waited.
“Well?””
He looked at Vanessa.
“The original agreement was reopened.””
“What does that mean?””
Richard hesitated.
“It means someone with access credentials entered the system.””
“Whose credentials?””
Richard looked at me.
“Yours.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
“That’s impossible,” Vanessa said quickly.
Everyone turned toward her.
She immediately stopped.
Richard noticed.
“Why is that impossible?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
I felt something change.
The room wasn’t just about what she had done anymore.
It was about what she knew.
I looked at Lily.
She was watching Vanessa carefully.
A child shouldn’t have to understand adult betrayal.
But she did.
“Lily,” I whispered.
She looked at me.
“Did Vanessa ever ask you about my computer?””
Her eyes moved away.
That was all I needed.
“Lily?””
She hesitated.
Then nodded.
My chest tightened.
“When?””
“A few weeks ago.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Marcus, stop.””
“No.””
I looked at my daughter.
“What did she ask?””
Lily played with the edge of her dress.
“She asked if you kept important papers at home.””
My jaw tightened.
“What else?””
“She asked if you had passwords.””
The room went silent.
Vanessa looked desperate.
“I was trying to understand your situation.””
“Your situation?””
I stared at her.
“You were looking for information about my daughter.””
“No.””
“Then why?””
She didn’t answer.
Again.
Richard sighed.
“Vanessa, tell him.””
She looked at Richard.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
“I know exactly what I’m talking about.””
His voice became colder.
“I drafted the first agreement because you told me Marcus was planning to move away.””
My eyebrows lifted.
“What?””
Richard continued.
“You told me you were afraid Lily would lose access to you.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“That’s a lie.””
Her face changed.
“I was scared.””
“You created a legal document because you were scared?””
“I didn’t know what else to do.””
I shook my head.
“You could have talked to me.””
She looked away.
“I tried.””
“When?””
Silence.
Then she whispered:
“You were always busy.””
The answer was so small.
So weak.
It made me even angrier.
“You were jealous of a child.””
Her face tightened.
“No.””
“Yes.””
I pointed toward Lily.
“You saw her as competition.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
For a second, I thought she might apologize.
Instead, she said:
“You have no idea what it feels like to always be second.””
I looked at her.
“You made my daughter feel unwanted because you felt unwanted.””
The words hit.
She didn’t argue.
Richard opened the folder again.
“There’s another issue.””
I turned.
“What now?””
He pulled out a copy of the document.
“The inheritance.””
I stared at him.
“What inheritance?””
Richard looked at Lily.
“Lily’s mother left something behind.””
My breathing slowed.
Lily’s mother.
A woman I hadn’t spoken about in years.
“What?””
Richard lowered his voice.
“A trust.””
My eyes moved to Lily.
She didn’t understand.
She shouldn’t have to.
“How much?””
Richard didn’t answer immediately.
“Enough that someone could become very interested in controlling access to it.””
The chapel felt colder.
Vanessa whispered:
“Marcus, I wasn’t trying to steal from her.””
I looked at her.
“I didn’t say that.””
Her face fell.
Because she knew.
I hadn’t accused her yet.
She had defended herself before I even asked.
Richard placed the documents on the table.
“The agreement wasn’t designed to remove Lily from your life.””
I looked at him.
“Then what was it designed to do?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“It was designed to give Vanessa legal authority over certain decisions involving Lily.””
My heart stopped.
“Why?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Because the answer came from Vanessa.
Quietly.
“I thought I could protect her.””
I stared.
“Protect her from what?””
Vanessa looked at Lily.
Then at me.
And said something that made the entire room go silent.
“From the person who was trying to take her away.””
I felt my blood run cold.
“What person?””
Vanessa looked toward the chapel doors.
A shadow appeared outside.
Someone was standing there.
Watching.
Richard’s face changed.
“No…”
I looked at him.
“You know who that is?””
He nodded slowly.
And whispered:
“That’s the person who started all of this.””
May you like
The door opened.
And a man walked inside.
