Chapter 14: The Choice That Changed Everything
The letter shook in my hands.
Everyone was watching me.
Waiting.
But I couldn’t look up.
Not yet.
Because every word felt like another piece of the life I thought I understood.
I continued reading.
*Marcus, I need you to understand something. Love is not always the person who gives you a name. Sometimes it is the person who stays when nobody else does.*
My eyes filled.
I looked at Lily.
She was watching me.
Waiting for me to tell her everything was okay.
Like I always did.
I kept reading.
*If Lily is calling you Daddy, then you already answered the most important question.*
My breath caught.
The next line was harder.
*But there is one person you cannot trust.*
I looked at Vanessa.
Then Andre.
Then Richard.
Everyone waited.
I turned the paper.
The final sentence was written alone.
*It was never Calvin. It was the person who helped him hide everything.*
The room froze.
Calvin looked surprised.
For the first time.
Actually surprised.
I looked at him.
“You didn’t know?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
Detective Harris stepped forward.
“Who?””
I read the letter again.
The handwriting.
The fear.
The warning.
Then I heard something.
A small sound.
A gasp.
From Richard.
Everyone turned.
Richard looked away.
My stomach dropped.
“Richard.””
He didn’t answer.
“Richard.””
Slowly, he looked at me.
And I knew.
Before he spoke.
“No.””
Vanessa whispered.
“No, please.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“I never wanted this.””
My heart sank.
Another person.
Another betrayal.
“Wanted what?””
He looked at the floor.
“I wanted to fix it.””
Calvin laughed.
“You always did love pretending you were the hero.””
Richard looked at him.
“You used me.””
“No.””
Calvin smiled.
“You let yourself be used.””
The words hit Richard.
Because they were true.
I stepped forward.
“What did you do?””
Richard’s voice was quiet.
“I changed the documents.””
My stomach tightened.
“What documents?””
“The custody agreement.””
Vanessa covered her face.
“Richard…”
“I thought I was protecting Lily.””
I shook my head.
“Stop saying that.””
He looked at me.
“I made mistakes.””
“No.””
My voice became louder.
“You made choices.””
Silence.
Richard nodded.
“You’re right.””
For once, someone admitted it.
“I changed the agreement because Calvin convinced me Lily would be safer.””
Detective Harris stared.
“Why?””
Richard looked at Lily.
“Because I believed Marcus would never survive losing her.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Richard hesitated.
Then:
“The original plan wasn’t to take Lily away.””
Everyone waited.
“It was to force Marcus into a legal battle.””
Andre looked confused.
“Why?””
Richard looked at me.
“Because they wanted you distracted.””
The room went cold.
“Distracted from what?””
Richard swallowed.
“From finding out what happened to Lily’s mother.””
I felt sick.
The entire plan.
The notes.
The wedding.
The custody papers.
It was all designed to keep me looking in the wrong direction.
Calvin’s expression changed.
“You weren’t supposed to reveal that.””
Richard looked at him.
“You ruined everything.””
Detective Harris moved toward Calvin.
“Explain.””
Calvin laughed.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“You want the truth?””
I stared.
“Yes.””
He smiled sadly.
“Your brother was never the biggest problem.””
Richard looked away.
“Calvin.””
“No.””
Calvin stepped forward.
“He was always trying to control the outcome.””
His eyes moved to me.
“But Vanessa?””
Everyone looked at her.
She froze.
Calvin continued.
“She was trying to hide the real reason Lily’s mother died.””
My heart stopped.
I turned toward Vanessa.
“What?””
Her face collapsed.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“Not again.””
She started crying.
“I didn’t kill her.””
Nobody spoke.
Because that was not the question.
I walked closer.
“What happened?””
Vanessa looked at Lily.
Then at me.
“She found out Daniel wasn’t the only threat.””
My chest tightened.
“Who else?””
Vanessa whispered:
“The person who caused the accident.””
The room froze.
Detective Harris moved closer.
“What accident?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“The one everyone thought was random.””
My breathing slowed.
Lily’s mother’s death.
The event that changed everything.
The event that started all of this.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“She wasn’t supposed to die.””
I felt the ground disappear.
“Then who was supposed to?””
Nobody answered.
Then Lily spoke.
A tiny voice.
“Mommy said someone was angry.””
Everyone turned.
Lily looked at the letter.
“She said…”
Her face changed.
“She said Daddy needed to know the truth.””
I knelt beside her.
“What truth, baby?””
She pointed at the letter.
The back of it.
Something I hadn’t noticed.
A second message.
Hidden under the fold.
I turned it over.
Three words.
Written in her mother’s handwriting.
*LOOK UNDER HOME.*
May you like
And beneath it:
*THE REAL PROOF IS STILL THERE.*
