Chapter 1: The Woman With Her Hair Over Her Eye

“Olivia, look at me.””

Luca Romano’s voice cut through the noise of champagne glasses, soft jazz, and wealthy guests laughing beneath crystal chandeliers.

For the first time that night, the entire engagement party seemed to stop.

Olivia Carter stood beside the dessert table with her head lowered, holding a silver tray filled with untouched pastries. She had spent the last four hours moving quietly between tables, pretending she didn’t feel every stare, every whisper, every judgment that followed her around the room.

But Luca had noticed something nobody else wanted to see.

Her hair.

She had kept the left side of her face covered all evening.

“Olivia,” Luca repeated, stepping closer.

“Look at me.””

She froze.

Her fingers tightened around the tray.

Across the ballroom, Vanessa Whitmore watched the scene unfold with a perfectly practiced smile. She wore a diamond necklace that caught every light in the room, a designer gown that probably cost more than Olivia made in six months, and the confident expression of a woman who believed she owned every corner of the world she entered.

Vanessa was Luca’s fiancée.

And Olivia was just the event server hired to work the party.

At least, that was what everyone believed.

Before Olivia could answer Luca, Vanessa walked over.

“She ran into the storage room door,” Vanessa said smoothly.

Her voice was sweet.

Too sweet.

“She was rushing around, probably wasn’t paying attention. These things happen.””

Luca’s eyes shifted from Olivia to Vanessa.

“I didn’t ask you.””

The smile on Vanessa’s face disappeared for half a second.

It was quick.

Almost invisible.

But Olivia saw it.

She had learned a long time ago that the smallest cracks revealed the biggest truths.

Vanessa recovered immediately.

“Luca, I’m just explaining what happened.””

“No,” Luca said calmly.

“You’re explaining what you want me to believe.””

The room became quieter.

Not silent.

Just quieter.

The kind of quiet that happens when rich people realize a private argument might become public entertainment.

Olivia swallowed hard.

She didn’t want this.

She didn’t want Luca defending her.

She didn’t want Vanessa angry.

Most of all, she didn’t want anyone seeing the reason she had hidden her face all night.

But Luca looked at her with something she hadn’t expected.

Concern.

Not pity.

Concern.

“Olivia,” he said softly.

“Move your hair.””

Her heart dropped.

For a moment, she considered lying.

She considered walking away.

She had spent years surviving by staying invisible. Invisible people didn’t create problems. Invisible people didn’t get blamed. Invisible people didn’t lose their jobs.

But something inside her was tired.

Tired of covering bruises caused by someone else’s cruelty.

Slowly, Olivia lifted her hand.

She pushed her hair behind her ear.

The room changed.

A dark bruise spread beneath her left eye, reaching toward her cheekbone.

A few guests gasped.

Someone whispered, “Oh my God.””

Luca stared.

The warmth in his expression disappeared.

It was replaced by something colder.

Something dangerous.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Luca, don’t make this into something it isn’t.””

But he wasn’t looking at her.

He was looking at Olivia.

“Who did this?””

Olivia opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because she knew the truth.

And she knew telling the truth would destroy more than one person in that room.

“I fell,” she whispered.

Luca’s jaw tightened.

He knew she was lying.

Daniel Brooks knew too.

Daniel had been Luca’s closest friend for fifteen years. They had grown up together, built businesses together, and survived enough storms to recognize when someone was hiding one.

He quietly walked away from the crowd.

A few minutes later, he returned holding a tablet.

“Luca.””

Something about Daniel’s voice made everyone turn.

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“What is that?”” she asked.

Daniel didn’t answer her.

He tapped the screen.

The ballroom television behind the stage flickered on.

The engagement party’s security camera footage appeared.

Everyone watched.

The video showed Olivia walking into the storage hallway carrying boxes of decorations.

Then Vanessa appeared.

The room went completely still.

On the screen, Vanessa grabbed Olivia’s arm.

Olivia said something.

Vanessa stepped closer.

Then the impossible happened.

Vanessa slapped her.

Hard.

The sound echoed even through the silent ballroom.

Olivia stumbled backward.

Vanessa shoved her.

Olivia fell into the edge of the doorway.

The same doorway Vanessa claimed Olivia had accidentally walked into.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

The video continued.

A man standing nearby lifted his phone and took pictures.

Pictures of Olivia.

Pictures of the injury.

Pictures that could later make it look like Olivia was the one who caused trouble.

Luca stared at the screen.

His face had gone pale.

“Who is that man?”” he asked.

Daniel shook his head.

“I’m finding out.””

Vanessa looked around the room.

The confidence was gone.

The perfect smile was gone.

For the first time all night, she looked afraid.

“Luca, you don’t understand.””

He turned toward her.

“No. I understand exactly what I saw.””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“This girl is manipulating you.””

Olivia looked down.

Those words hurt more than she expected.

Because they sounded familiar.

People always assumed women like her were looking for something.

Money.

Attention.

A way into another person’s world.

Nobody ever asked what they had survived to get there.

Luca stepped toward Olivia.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

She laughed quietly.

Not because anything was funny.

Because sometimes pain came out sounding like a laugh.

“Because people like me don’t get believed when people like her are involved.””

That sentence hit harder than any accusation.

Luca had no answer.

Because deep down, he knew she was right.

Then Olivia reached into the small bag she carried beneath her uniform.

She pulled out an old photograph.

The edges were worn.

The paper was bent from being held too many times.

She placed it on the table between them.

“I wasn’t attacked because Vanessa hates me,” Olivia said.

Everyone looked at the photograph.

“I was attacked because of this.””

Luca picked it up.

His hands stopped moving.

The woman in the picture was someone he knew.

Someone he had not seen in years.

His former wife.

And she was holding a little boy.

A little boy around five years old.

Luca stared at the child’s face.

His breathing changed.

Because there was something familiar.

Something impossible.

Olivia looked directly at him.

“She hit me because she didn’t want you seeing this.””

The entire room waited.

“Why?””

May you like

Olivia’s voice dropped.

“Because that boy might be your son.””
