Chapter 8: The Enemy Inside the House
Trust is a strange thing.
People think losing trust happens in one moment.
A lie.
A betrayal.
A single terrible decision.
But rebuilding trust is different.
It happens slowly.
One truth at a time.
And Vanessa had a lot of truth to prove.
She sat across from us in Daniel’s office while Marcus played in another room with a security guard nearby.
I kept watching her.
Not because I wanted to punish her.
Because I was trying to understand her.
The woman who had hurt Olivia was sitting in front of me asking for help.
The woman I almost married was admitting she had spent years hiding things from me.
“I need a name,” Daniel said.
Vanessa shook her head.
“I told you. I don’t know.””
“That’s not good enough.””
“I never had access to everything Richard did.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“But you helped him.””
Her face changed.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
No excuses.
No pretending.
“Yes,” she repeated.
“I helped him.””
She looked at me.
“And I’m sorry.””
I looked away.
Sorry was a word people used when the damage was already done.
But I could tell Vanessa wasn’t asking me to forgive her.
Not yet.
She was asking me to listen.
“How did you meet Richard?””
She answered quietly.
“When Elijah got sick, Richard paid for his treatment.””
“And you trusted him.””
“Yes.””
“What happened after Elijah died?””
Her eyes became distant.
“He told me Elijah was betrayed.””
“By my family.””
She nodded.
“He showed me documents. Emails. Fake evidence.””
Daniel interrupted.
“Fake evidence?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you verify it?””
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“Because grief makes people believe what they need to believe.””
Nobody responded.
Because that was true.
Pain changes the way people see the world.
It can make lies look like answers.
“What did Richard ask you to do?”” I asked.
Vanessa looked at me.
“At first?””
She hesitated.
“Get close to you.””
The words still hurt.
“Why?””
“To learn how much you knew.””
“And later?””
Her eyes dropped.
“Later, I started caring about you.””
I stayed silent.
“Then I found out about Marcus.””
My jaw tightened.
“I knew Isabella had a child. I didn’t know it was yours.””
“When did you find out?””
“Months ago.””
“And you said nothing.””
“I was scared.””
“Of Richard?””
“Yes.””
“And of losing me.””
She looked at me.
“Yes.””
The room went quiet.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
He answered.
A few seconds later, his expression changed.
“What happened?””
He listened.
Then looked at me.
“We have a problem.””
“What?””
“The person inside the company has been found.””
“Who?””
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
“Your uncle.””
I froze.
“My uncle?””
“Anthony Romano.””
The name felt impossible.
My father’s younger brother.
The man who taught me how to shake hands.
The man who sat beside my grandfather at every family dinner.
“He’s been accessing private files.””
“For how long?””
Daniel looked at the report.
“Three years.””
Three years.
The same amount of time Vanessa had been close to me.
The same amount of time Richard had been moving pieces around.
My family.
My company.
My son.
Everything was connected.
I stood.
“I’m going to talk to him.””
Daniel grabbed my arm.
“No.””
“He’s my uncle.””
“And that’s exactly why you can’t go alone.””
But I was already thinking about something else.
Anthony wasn’t just a business partner.
He was family.
And family was supposed to protect you.
Not destroy you.
Before we could decide our next move, Marcus walked into the room.
He was holding a drawing.
“Dad?””
The word stopped me.
Not Luca.
Not Mr. Romano.
Dad.
A single word.
But it meant everything.
I knelt down.
“What is it?””
He handed me the paper.
It was a picture of three people.
Me.
Him.
And Isabella.
At the top, he had written:
*MY FAMILY*
My throat tightened.
“You like it?””
He nodded.
“I think families can change.””
I looked at him.
“What do you mean?””
He shrugged.
“Mom said families aren’t always perfect.””
A small smile appeared.
“But they can still choose each other.””
I looked at Isabella.
She was standing in the doorway.
Watching us.
For the first time in years, I didn’t see the woman who left me.
I saw the woman who protected our son.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number.
One picture.
Only one.
I opened it.
My blood ran cold.
It was Anthony Romano.
Standing with Richard Hale.
And Vanessa.
But the timestamp was from that morning.
They were still working together.
I looked up.
Vanessa saw my face.
“What is it?””
I turned the phone toward her.
Her expression changed instantly.
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
“Because Richard told me he was finished with Anthony.””
I stared at the picture.
And I realized something worse than betrayal.
Someone was lying again.
May you like
And this time, the enemy wasn’t outside my family.
It was standing right in the middle of it.
