Chapter 2: The Ring That Changed Everything
Nobody in the ballroom moved.
Not the guests.
Not the musicians.
Not even Vanessa.
The photograph sat on the table like a bomb waiting for someone to touch it.
Luca looked at the little boy again.
His former wife, Isabella, was smiling in the picture.
That was what disturbed him the most.
Because Isabella had never looked that happy in the years they were married.
Not with him.
Not during the final months before their divorce.
Not when she left without giving him a real explanation.
She had simply disappeared from his life.
And now, years later, she was standing in front of him again through a photograph.
Holding a child.
A child who had his eyes.
“Where did you get this?”” Luca asked.
His voice was barely above a whisper.
Olivia looked at the crowd around them.
She looked uncomfortable.
Like she hated being the center of attention.
“I didn’t want to show you here.””
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“Because she knows it’s fake.””
Everyone turned.
Vanessa forced herself to laugh.
“This is ridiculous. Luca, you’re seriously going to believe a random server with an old picture?””
Olivia looked at her.
Not with anger.
With disappointment.
That seemed to bother Vanessa more.
“You knew about it,” Olivia said.
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“Knew about what?””
“The picture.””
A silence followed.
A dangerous silence.
Luca looked between them.
“Olivia.””
She took a breath.
“Three days ago, I was cleaning the private office upstairs after a business meeting. I found a folder hidden behind some books.””
Luca frowned.
“What folder?””
“A folder with pictures.””
Vanessa’s eyes moved.
Just for a second.
But Daniel noticed.
“And?”” Luca asked.
Olivia continued.
“There were pictures of Isabella. Of the boy. And of someone following them.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Someone?””
Olivia nodded.
“The same man who took pictures of me tonight.””
The room erupted with whispers.
Luca grabbed the photograph again.
“Why would Vanessa have pictures of my ex-wife?””
Nobody answered.
Then Daniel looked down at the image.
“Wait.””
He pointed.
“Zoom in.””
One of the staff members connected the photograph to the screen.
The image became larger.
The little boy’s hand was visible.
And around his finger was a small ring.
Luca stopped breathing.
“No.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You recognize it?””
Luca didn’t answer.
Because he did.
Everyone in his family knew that ring.
It had belonged to his grandfather.
A simple gold band with a small engraved mark inside.
A family heirloom passed down for generations.
Luca had lost it when he was younger.
At least, that was what he believed.
“My grandfather gave that ring to me before he died,” Luca whispered.
Daniel looked at the boy.
“Then why is it on his finger?””
Luca’s eyes filled with confusion.
Memories rushed back.
Isabella leaving.
The arguments.
The secrets.
The phone calls she refused to explain.
The night she told him she needed to “start over.””
He had spent years believing she betrayed him.
But what if he was wrong?
What if she had been protecting something?
Or someone?
Vanessa’s hand began shaking.
The diamond glass she held slipped from her fingers.
It hit the marble floor.
The sound shattered the silence.
Everyone looked at her.
Luca slowly turned.
“Vanessa.””
She didn’t respond.
“Why are you scared?””
“I’m not.””
“You are.””
She looked at him.
For the first time since he met her, Vanessa looked like she didn’t have a plan.
“I can explain.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“Explain why you hired someone to follow Isabella.””
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
“How did you—”
She stopped.
Too late.
The words had already escaped.
Luca’s face changed.
“You did hire someone.””
Vanessa looked around desperately.
“I didn’t mean for this to happen.””
Olivia stared at her.
“You didn’t mean for what to happen?””
Vanessa said nothing.
And that silence answered everything.
Daniel pulled out his phone.
“I ran the plate number from the security footage. The man outside the storage hallway works for a private investigation company.””
Luca looked at Vanessa.
“You were investigating my ex-wife?””
Daniel nodded.
“And I found something else.””
He opened another file.
“Vanessa has been searching for information about a child connected to Isabella for months.””
Luca felt the room spinning.
A child.
His child.
A child he never knew existed.
Olivia stepped closer.
“I think Vanessa found out before you did.””
Luca looked at her.
“And that’s why she attacked you?””
Olivia nodded.
“She thought I was going to give you the picture.””
The anger building inside Luca was no longer hidden.
But beneath the anger was something else.
Pain.
Because all these years, he thought he had lost his family.
Now he was learning he might have had one waiting for him.
A son.
A son who had grown up without him.
A son who wore his family ring.
Vanessa reached toward him.
“Luca, please.””
He stepped back.
That movement hurt her more than any words could have.
Because Vanessa had always believed she could control the situation.
Control the story.
Control him.
But she had forgotten one thing.
Truth had a way of walking into the room without permission.
Luca looked at the photograph one more time.
Then he looked at Olivia.
“Where is Isabella?””
Olivia hesitated.
“She’s alive.””
Every person in the room gasped.
Luca’s eyes widened.
“You know where she is?””
Olivia slowly nodded.
“I found her.””
“And the boy?””
Olivia looked at the photograph.
“He knows you as a stranger.””
Luca closed his eyes.
The sentence broke something inside him.
A child with his blood.
His family name.
His grandfather’s ring.
And that child had grown up never knowing his father existed.
When Luca opened his eyes again, he was no longer the man standing at an engagement party.
He was a father searching for his son.
“Take me to them,” he said.
Olivia looked at Vanessa.
Then back at Luca.
“You need to understand something.””
“What?””
“The truth about your son is only the beginning.””
May you like
She lowered her voice.
“Because Vanessa wasn’t the only person hiding something from you.””
