Chapter 5: The Night They Came for Marcus
The sound of breaking glass changed everything.
A few hours earlier, I had been standing in a kitchen trying to understand how I became a father without ever knowing my son existed.
Now I was standing in a dark hallway, listening to someone moving through the house.
Someone who wasn’t supposed to be there.
“Luca,” Isabella whispered.
I held up my hand.
“Stay with Marcus.””
She looked like she wanted to argue.
She had always been like that.
Strong.
Stubborn.
The kind of woman who would stand in front of a storm instead of running from it.
But when she looked at me, she saw something different.
She saw a father protecting his child.
And for the first time in years, she let me do it.
I moved quietly toward the living room.
My heart was pounding.
Not because I was afraid for myself.
I had faced angry investors.
Business rivals.
People who wanted to destroy everything my family built.
But this was different.
This wasn’t about money.
This wasn’t about my name.
This was about my son.
A shadow moved near the broken window.
I reached for the lamp on the side table and turned it on.
The room flashed bright.
Nobody was there.
Only broken glass scattered across the floor.
Then I saw it.
A small envelope sitting on the table.
My name was written across the front.
*LUCA ROMANO.*
I didn’t touch it.
Something told me not to.
“Luca?””
Isabella stood behind me.
“Don’t come closer.””
She stopped.
“What is it?””
“I don’t know.””
I pulled out my phone and called Daniel.
He answered on the first ring.
“Are you okay?””
“Someone broke into Isabella’s house.””
A pause.
Then his voice changed.
“Get Marcus out of there.””
“I’m trying.””
“No, Luca. Listen to me.””
His tone was serious.
“Don’t open anything they left behind.””
I stared at the envelope.
Too late.
I already knew what was inside.
A message.
A warning.
A threat.
“They want us scared,” I said.
“No,” Daniel replied.
“They want you emotional. There’s a difference.””
I understood what he meant.
Fear makes people run.
Anger makes people make mistakes.
And whoever was behind this knew exactly how to push my buttons.
I looked upstairs.
At my son.
The child I had just met.
The child they were willing to hurt.
“I’m taking him somewhere safe.””
Daniel agreed.
“I’ll meet you there.””
Twenty minutes later, we were driving away from the house.
Marcus sat in the backseat between Isabella and me.
He was quiet.
Too quiet.
Children shouldn’t have to understand danger.
They shouldn’t have to recognize fear in adults.
But Marcus did.
“Are the bad people coming back?”” he asked.
My heart broke.
I looked at him through the mirror.
“No.””
He stared at me.
“You don’t know that.””
The honesty surprised me.
And honestly?
It scared me.
Because he was right.
I didn’t know.
But I needed him to believe something.
So I said the only thing I could promise.
“I know I’m here now.””
Marcus looked down.
“That’s not the same.””
The words were small.
But they carried years.
Years without me.
Years of wondering.
Years of growing up with questions nobody answered.
I swallowed.
“No,” I said quietly.
“It’s not.””
Isabella looked at me.
I didn’t defend myself.
I didn’t make excuses.
Because Marcus deserved the truth.
“I should have been here.””
The boy looked at me.
“But you didn’t know.””
“No.””
“So why are you sorry?””
That question caught me off guard.
Because I realized something.
Marcus wasn’t asking me why I failed.
He was asking me why I carried the weight of something I never knew existed.
I turned around slightly.
“Because knowing you now makes every day I missed feel important.””
For the first time, Marcus didn’t look away.
When we arrived at Daniel’s private property outside the city, security was already waiting.
Daniel walked toward us.
His expression told me something was wrong.
“What happened?”” I asked.
He looked at Isabella.
Then at Marcus.
“I found out who the man in the photos was.””
“Who?””
Daniel handed me a folder.
Inside was a picture.
The same man from the video.
The same man who photographed Olivia.
His name was Victor Graves.
And underneath his name was a list of clients.
One name stood out.
Vanessa Whitmore.
Another name was there too.
Richard Hale.
My stomach tightened.
“They’ve been working together,” Daniel said.
“For how long?””
“Almost a year.””
I looked at Isabella.
“Why?””
Daniel opened another document.
“Because Richard believes the Romano company should have gone to him after your grandfather died.””
I laughed bitterly.
“So this is about revenge?””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“It’s about inheritance.””
I looked down.
The answer was obvious.
Marcus.
The trust.
The future.
“They wanted my son to disappear.””
Daniel nodded.
“And they almost succeeded.””
A silence fell over us.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone looked at it.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice came through.
Vanessa.
“You’re making a mistake.””
My jaw tightened.
“You attacked Olivia.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“You broke into Isabella’s home.””
“I was trying to protect your family.””
I laughed.
“My family?””
Her voice became colder.
“Luca, you have no idea what you’re dealing with.””
“I know exactly what I’m dealing with.””
“No, you don’t.””
A pause.
Then she said the words that made my blood freeze.
“Ask Isabella why Marcus’s birth certificate was changed.””
The call ended.
I slowly lowered the phone.
Everyone looked at me.
Isabella’s face had gone pale.
“What did she mean?””
Isabella didn’t answer.
And that scared me more than Vanessa’s threat.
Because I had just discovered my son.
May you like
But now I was learning there was another secret.
One Isabella had kept from both of us.
