Chapter 6: The Truth Written on Paper
I had spent my entire life believing documents told the truth.
Birth certificates.
Contracts.
Legal papers.
Family records.
Those were the things people trusted when memories became unclear.
But that night, I learned something different.
Paper could lie too.
“Isabella,” I said.
My voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Tell me what she meant.””
She looked at Marcus.
That was the first thing she did.
Not me.
Not Daniel.
Marcus.
Like every decision she had made started and ended with protecting him.
“There’s something you need to know.””
I waited.
“When Marcus was born, his birth certificate listed another name.””
The room went silent.
“What name?””
She looked down.
“Daniel Carter.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“My brother.””
I felt confused.
“Your brother?””
“He was the one who helped me disappear.””
I looked at Daniel.
Even he looked shocked.
“You told people your brother was Marcus’s father?””
Isabella nodded.
“Only legally.””
“Why?””
“Because Vanessa was searching for Luca Romano’s heir.””
Her voice shook.
“And if she found out Marcus was yours, he would become a target.””
I walked away.
Not because I was angry.
Because I was trying to understand.
“You changed my son’s identity.””
“I protected your son.””
The answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
And maybe that was why it hurt.
Because both things were true.
She protected him.
But she also erased me.
“I was his father.””
“I know.””
“No, Isabella. You don’t know what it feels like to find out you have a child who has lived nine years without you.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“You think I don’t know?””
That stopped me.
“You think I wanted to wake up every morning knowing my son couldn’t know his father?””
Her voice cracked.
“I watched him ask why other kids had dads who came to school events. I watched him make Father’s Day cards and leave them blank because he didn’t know who to give them to.””
I looked away.
Because that hurt.
Bad.
“I hated myself every day.””
The anger inside me weakened.
Not disappeared.
But weakened.
Because I could see it.
She wasn’t celebrating keeping him away.
She was carrying it.
Alone.
Marcus appeared at the doorway.
Nobody noticed him come in.
“How long have you been awake?”” Isabella asked.
He ignored the question.
“Is my name not really Marcus Carter?””
Nobody spoke.
That was the moment I realized children always hear the things adults think they hide.
I knelt down.
“Your name is Marcus.””
He looked at me.
“But?””
I smiled sadly.
“But you’re also a Romano.””
He touched the ring on his finger.
“Like you?””
“Yes.””
He looked confused.
“Does that mean I’m in trouble?””
My chest tightened.
“No.””
I looked directly at him.
“It means you’re loved.””
Marcus stared at me for a long moment.
Then he asked the question I feared.
“Do you want me?””
I almost broke.
I moved closer.
“More than anything.””
He nodded slowly.
Not completely believing me yet.
But maybe starting to.
The next morning, Daniel brought more information.
And none of it was good.
“Richard Hale has been trying to access the trust for years,” he said.
“How?””
“By proving Marcus wasn’t legitimate.””
I looked at the documents.
“The birth certificate.””
Daniel nodded.
“Exactly.””
A terrible realization hit me.
Vanessa didn’t just want Marcus gone.
She wanted him discredited.
If she could prove Marcus wasn’t legally connected to me, the inheritance would become vulnerable.
“She wasn’t hiding the truth,” I said.
“She was creating a different one.””
Daniel nodded.
Then he placed another file on the table.
“This came from Victor Graves’s computer.””
Inside were photographs.
Hundreds of them.
Olivia.
Isabella.
Marcus.
Me.
My entire family had been watched.
But one photo made me stop.
It was taken years ago.
Before Isabella left.
Before Marcus was born.
It showed Vanessa standing outside my old house.
Holding a folder.
Talking to Isabella.
“What is this?””
Daniel looked serious.
“We don’t know.””
I stared at the image.
Vanessa wasn’t trying to hurt Isabella in that picture.
She looked worried.
Almost desperate.
Like she was warning her.
Not threatening her.
“Something doesn’t make sense.””
Daniel nodded.
“I know.””
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Olivia.
*I found something about Vanessa. You need to see it before you trust anyone.*
I looked at the screen.
The words felt heavier than they should have.
Because Olivia had been the one person who exposed the truth.
But now she was warning me about another secret.
Another hidden piece.
Another person who might not be who they seemed.
May you like
And for the first time since discovering Marcus…
I wondered if I had walked into a fight where nobody was telling me the whole story.
