Chapter 3: The Secret Isabella Carried
I had spent seven years believing Isabella Romano left me because she stopped loving me.
That was the story I told myself because it was easier than admitting I didn’t understand the woman I once promised forever to.
People always want a simple reason when someone walks away.
They want a villain.
They want a betrayal.
They want someone to blame.
And for years, I blamed Isabella.
But sitting in that ballroom, staring at a photograph of a little boy wearing my family ring, I realized something terrifying.
Maybe I had spent seven years angry at the one person who had been trying to protect me.
The drive to find Isabella felt longer than any drive I had ever taken.
Olivia sat quietly in the passenger seat.
She had barely spoken since we left the engagement party.
Vanessa had been taken aside by security while Daniel handled the situation, but I knew that wasn’t the end of it.
People like Vanessa didn’t disappear when they were caught.
They fought harder.
They protected themselves.
And I had a feeling Vanessa had been protecting something much bigger than a lie.
“You knew Isabella before tonight,” I finally said.
Olivia looked out the window.
“Yes.””
“How?””
She hesitated.
“I worked at a community center in Atlanta a few years ago.””
I glanced at her.
“Atlanta?””
She nodded.
“That’s where Isabella lived after she left you.””
My grip tightened on the steering wheel.
“She was in Atlanta all this time?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t she contact me?””
Olivia looked down.
“Because she thought someone was watching her.””
The words settled between us.
Someone was watching her.
Just like the man from the security footage.
“Who?””
“I don’t know for sure.””
“But you have a guess.””
Olivia didn’t answer.
She didn’t have to.
I already knew.
“Vanessa.””
She nodded slowly.
“When I met Isabella, she was scared. Not the kind of scared someone gets after a bad breakup. She was scared like someone was waiting for her to make one mistake.””
I swallowed.
That didn’t sound like the woman I knew.
But maybe that was the problem.
Maybe I never knew her as well as I thought.
“What was the boy’s name?””
Olivia looked at me.
“Marcus.””
The name hit me harder than expected.
Marcus.
My son had a name.
A life.
A favorite color.
A favorite food.
A birthday.
Memories I wasn’t part of.
“How old is he now?””
“Nine.””
Nine.
Nine years old.
I missed his first steps.
His first words.
His first day of school.
Every moment a father was supposed to remember.
I pulled the car over.
Olivia looked concerned.
“Luca?””
I stared ahead.
“I lost nine years.””
She didn’t know what to say.
Neither did I.
Because money could buy houses.
Cars.
Companies.
Anything except time.
After a few moments, Olivia spoke quietly.
“You need to hear Isabella’s side before you decide what happened.””
I looked at her.
“What do you mean?””
“Luca, when Isabella left, she didn’t leave because she wanted to hurt you.””
“Then why?””
“Because she found out something.””
“What?””
Olivia looked at me.
“The night she left, she discovered Vanessa had been looking into Marcus.””
My chest tightened.
“Vanessa knew?””
“Yes.””
“But how?””
Olivia reached into her bag and pulled out another envelope.
“You should see this.””
Inside were printed documents.
Private investigation reports.
Photos.
Dates.
Names.
I scanned the pages.
Most of them were about Isabella.
Her address.
Her workplace.
Marcus’s school.
His daily routine.
My stomach turned.
This wasn’t curiosity.
This was surveillance.
“She was tracking them,” I whispered.
Olivia nodded.
“And Isabella knew.””
I looked at the last page.
There was a note attached.
A handwritten message.
My blood ran cold when I read it.
*If Luca finds out, everything falls apart.*
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Olivia shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
But I knew someone who might.
Isabella.
When we arrived at the small brick house on the edge of town, my hands were shaking.
Not from fear.
From everything I had imagined.
Would Marcus recognize me?
Would Isabella hate me?
Would she look at me and see the man who failed her?
The door opened before we knocked.
And there she was.
Isabella Romano.
Older.
Tired.
But still the woman who once danced barefoot with me in our first apartment.
Her eyes immediately found mine.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then she looked at Olivia.
And everything changed.
“You told him.””
It wasn’t a question.
Olivia lowered her eyes.
“He deserved to know.””
Isabella closed her eyes.
“I was hoping I had more time.””
I stepped forward.
“More time for what?””
Her face broke.
Not into anger.
Into sadness.
“More time to keep him safe.””
A little boy’s voice came from inside.
“Mom?””
Isabella froze.
Then a child appeared in the hallway.
And the world stopped.
He was smaller than I expected.
Brown skin.
Curly hair.
A curious expression.
But his eyes.
Those eyes.
They were mine.
The boy looked at me.
Then at Isabella.
“Who is he?””
Isabella couldn’t answer.
Neither could I.
Because suddenly every argument, every accusation, every painful memory from my marriage disappeared.
All I could see was my son.
A child I had never met.
A child who had my grandfather’s ring.
A child who had spent his entire life without knowing my name.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Mom?””
Isabella wiped a tear from her cheek.
“Marcus, this is…”
She stopped.
Her voice broke.
“This is your father.””
The boy stared at me.
Not angry.
Not excited.
Just confused.
Like someone had handed him a puzzle with missing pieces.
“You’re my dad?””
I nodded.
I wanted to say a thousand things.
I’m sorry.
I looked for you.
I didn’t know.
I would have come.
But none of those words felt big enough.
So I told him the only truth I had.
“Yes.””
Marcus looked down at the ring on his finger.
Then back at me.
“Why didn’t you come before?””
That question destroyed me.
Because I had no answer.
Behind him, Isabella looked away.
And I knew there was more.
Something she still hadn’t told me.
May you like
Something that explained why she ran.
Something that explained why Vanessa was willing to hurt people to keep the truth buried.
