Chapter 7: The Truth Behind Vanessa’s Fear
I used to think secrets were things people buried because they were ashamed.
I was wrong.
Sometimes people buried secrets because they were terrified of what would happen if the world found out.
That was the first thing I learned when Olivia showed up at Daniel’s property carrying a folder filled with documents.
She didn’t look like the same woman who had stood quietly serving drinks at my engagement party.
The woman I saw now looked exhausted.
But determined.
“Luca,” she said.
I noticed she kept looking over her shoulder.
“You were followed?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Daniel locked the door behind her.
“What did you find?””
Olivia placed the folder on the table.
“Everything about Vanessa.””
I opened it.
The first page was a financial report.
The second was a medical record.
The third was a photograph.
I looked at Vanessa standing beside a hospital bed.
But the person in the bed wasn’t Isabella.
It was a young man.
“Who is that?””
Olivia took a breath.
“Vanessa’s brother.””
I frowned.
“Her brother?””
“His name was Elijah Whitmore.””
“Was?””
Olivia nodded.
“He died eight years ago.””
I studied the picture.
Vanessa looked different.
Younger.
Less polished.
Less controlled.
Almost human.
“What does this have to do with Marcus?””
Olivia looked at me.
“Everything.””
She sat down.
“Vanessa and Elijah grew up with Richard Hale’s family.””
Daniel immediately understood.
“Of course.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Richard didn’t just hire Vanessa.””
Daniel pointed at the documents.
“He raised her.””
Olivia nodded.
“Richard was like a father figure to Vanessa. When Elijah got sick, Richard paid for his treatment.””
I looked back at the photo.
“So why would Vanessa attack Olivia? Why would she investigate Marcus?””
Olivia hesitated.
“Because Richard convinced her that Marcus was the reason Elijah died.””
The room became quiet.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“No,” Olivia said.
“It doesn’t.””
She opened another document.
“Elijah was working for Richard. He discovered Richard was moving money from the Romano company into private accounts.””
My stomach tightened.
“My company?””
“Yes.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“What happened?””
“According to these records, Elijah threatened to expose him.””
“And Richard stopped him,” Daniel said.
Olivia nodded.
“After Elijah died, Richard told Vanessa that the Romano family ruined his life. He convinced her that if Luca’s family had never existed, Elijah would still be alive.””
I stared at the documents.
“So Vanessa blamed me.””
“Yes.””
“But then why get engaged to me?””
Nobody answered.
Because that was the question that had been haunting me.
Why would someone spend years getting close to me if they wanted revenge?
Then Olivia said something I never expected.
“She didn’t start by trying to destroy you.””
I looked at her.
“She started by trying to get close enough to understand you.””
A chill moved through me.
“She was investigating me.””
“Yes.””
“And somewhere along the way?””
Olivia looked down.
“She fell in love with you.””
The words felt impossible.
But suddenly, everything about Vanessa became more complicated.
The woman who lied.
The woman who hurt Olivia.
The woman who tried to hide my son.
She wasn’t just one thing.
Nobody was.
Daniel tapped the table.
“That doesn’t excuse what she did.””
“I know,” Olivia said.
Her voice was firm.
“She hurt people. She made choices. But if we want the truth, we need the whole truth.””
I looked at the photograph again.
Vanessa standing beside her brother.
A person carrying grief.
A person manipulated by someone she trusted.
A person who still made terrible choices.
“What does Richard want now?””
Olivia looked at me.
“Marcus.””
I already knew.
But hearing it still hurt.
“He wants the trust.””
“Yes.””
“And Vanessa?””
Olivia was silent.
“She wants something else.””
“What?””
“Forgiveness.””
I almost laughed.
After everything?
After the lies?
After Olivia’s injury?
But then I remembered something.
The moment Vanessa dropped the glass.
The fear in her eyes.
Not anger.
Fear.
“She knows Richard is dangerous.””
Olivia nodded.
“I think she realized too late what she helped create.””
Before I could respond, the security alarm went off.
Everyone froze.
Daniel moved toward the monitors.
A black vehicle was approaching the gate.
My body went cold.
“Who is it?””
Daniel checked.
Then he looked at me.
“Vanessa.””
I walked outside.
She stepped out of the vehicle alone.
No security.
No lawyer.
No attitude.
Just Vanessa.
For the first time, she looked like someone who had lost everything.
“I need to talk to you,” she said.
I stared at her.
“You attacked someone I cared about.””
Her eyes lowered.
“I know.””
“You lied to me.””
“I know.””
“You used me.””
Her face tightened.
“I know.””
The fact that she wasn’t fighting back almost made it worse.
“What do you want?””
Vanessa looked toward the house.
Toward Marcus.
Then back at me.
“I want to stop Richard.””
I laughed quietly.
“Why should I believe you?””
“Because I know what he’s planning.””
“And what is that?””
Her voice dropped.
“He doesn’t just want the trust.””
A pause.
“He wants Marcus gone before anyone can prove who he really is.””
My expression hardened.
“Explain.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Richard has someone inside your company.””
Daniel walked outside.
“Who?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I don’t know the name.””
“That’s convenient.””
“I’m not lying.””
For the first time, she sounded desperate.
“He’s been preparing this for years.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Why tell me now?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because Elijah died protecting the truth.””
She swallowed.
“And I spent years helping the person who killed him.””
Nobody spoke.

Then she whispered:
“I was wrong.””
