Chapter 10: The Envelope With My Son’s Name

I stared at the envelope sitting on the old wooden table.

NOAH.

Just five letters.

But they felt heavier than anything I had ever held.

Adrian stood across from me, watching.

Waiting.

Like he already knew what was inside.

I hated that.

I hated that everyone in my life seemed to know the ending of my story except me.

I reached for the envelope.

Elena stepped forward.

“Marcus, don’t.””

I stopped.

Slowly, I looked at her.

“Why?””

Her face changed.

Because she knew she didn’t have a good answer.

“Because Adrian wants you to open it.””

“And?””

“And because he’s spent years controlling what you believe.””

I looked at Adrian.

“Is that true?””

He smiled faintly.

“You still think this is about me.””

“Then what is it about?””

He looked at Noah.

“It’s about what he remembers.””

My son stood beside me, holding my hand tightly.

I could feel him shaking.

I knelt down.

“Noah.””

He looked at me.

“You don’t have to be scared.””

He whispered:

“I’m scared when people tell me not to remember.””

My chest tightened.

I looked at Elena.

She looked away.

That hurt.

Because it meant she knew.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a stack of papers.

The first page had a date.

The night Elena disappeared.

My eyes moved across the page.

And then I saw my own signature.

My hands went cold.

“What is this?””

Adrian stepped closer.

“Read it.””

I looked at Elena.

She was crying.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“Let me see.””

The document was a statement.

A confession.

Written in my handwriting.

I read the first line.

I, Marcus Carter, confirm that I understand the consequences of my decision.

My heart started racing.

“What decision?””

Nobody answered.

I kept reading.

I agree that Noah’s safety must come before my own memories.

I looked up.

“What does this mean?””

Adrian said nothing.

Elena whispered:

“You asked for it.””

I turned toward her.

“What?””

“You asked Adrian to erase parts of what happened.””

The room went silent.

I laughed once.

Because the alternative was screaming.

“You expect me to believe my own brother erased my memory?””

Adrian corrected me.

“Not erased.””

He stepped closer.

“Blocked.””

I stared at him.

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

He pointed at the paper.

“You signed.””

I looked down.

My signature was there.

Real.

My handwriting.

My name.

But I didn’t remember writing it.

My head started pounding.

Suddenly, fragments appeared.

A kitchen.

Elena crying.

Noah’s little shoes near the door.

Adrian standing beside me.

My own voice saying:

“Make sure I don’t remember.””

I grabbed the table.

“No.””

Elena moved toward me.

“Marcus.””

I pushed her away.

“No.””

The memories came faster.

A phone call.

A threat.

Someone watching the house.

Elena saying:

“They know about Noah.””

And my voice answering:

“Then I’ll forget.””

I covered my face.

“No.””

Noah came closer.

“Daddy?””

I looked at him.

And that was when I realized something.

He wasn’t afraid of Adrian.

He was afraid of me.

Not because I hurt him.

Because he remembered a version of me that I didn’t.

I lowered myself beside him.

“Buddy…”

He whispered:

“You were crying that night.””

My breath caught.

“What?””

“You told Mommy you were sorry.””

Elena covered her mouth.

Adrian looked away.

Noah continued.

“You said you didn’t want to forget me.””

A tear fell down his face.

“But Mommy said you had to.””

I felt broken.

Because my son was carrying the pieces of a night I couldn’t even remember.

I looked at Elena.

“Why?””

She wiped her tears.

“Because someone was coming for Noah.””

“Who?””

She hesitated.

“Someone who knew about the accident.””

“What accident?””

Adrian answered.

“The one that killed your parents.””

I froze.

“My parents?””

He nodded.

“You thought that was random too?””

The room went quiet.

My parents.

The accident.

Elena disappearing.

Noah remembering.

All connected.

“How?””

Adrian looked at the papers.

“Your family found something.””

“What?””

“A financial trail.””

I frowned.

“What does that have to do with Noah?””

“Everything.””

He pointed at the envelope.

“Because your son was the only person who saw who was behind it.””

I looked at Noah.

He looked terrified.

“What did you see, buddy?””

He whispered:

“The woman.””

Everyone froze.

Elena’s face changed.

“What woman?””

Noah looked at Vanessa.

“She was there.””

Vanessa stepped back.

“No.””

Noah shook his head.

“She was crying.””

My stomach dropped.

“Vanessa?””

She looked horrified.

“I wasn’t there.””

Noah’s voice became smaller.

“Mommy said not to trust her.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Then suddenly…

The lights flickered.

A loud crash came from outside.

Everyone turned.

The front window shattered.

Daniel grabbed Noah.

Adrian moved toward the door.

And on the floor outside was a note.

Written in black ink.

May you like

One sentence.

“THE BOY REMEMBERS WRONG.””
