Chapter 13: The Secret Elena Never Told Me

The room went silent.

Not the quiet kind.

The kind where everyone is afraid to breathe.

I stared at Elena.

She stared at the photograph in Daniel’s hand.

And for the first time since she returned, she looked like someone who had run out of places to hide.

“No,” she whispered.

Daniel turned the photograph toward her.

“The ink underneath.””

His voice was calm.

“But it’s your handwriting.””

Elena didn’t move.

I felt something inside me collapse.

Another secret.

Another hidden piece.

Another moment where everyone knew more about my life than I did.

“Marcus…”

I looked at her.

“Don’t.””

She stopped.

“Not another explanation.””

Her eyes filled.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

My voice shook.

“Everyone keeps destroying my life and calling it protection.””

Nobody spoke.

Because nobody could argue.

I looked at Noah.

He was exhausted.

A six-year-old boy who should have been worried about school and cartoons was sitting in the middle of a mystery that had lasted longer than his entire life.

I walked toward him.

“Buddy, I need you to go with Daniel for a minute.””

He looked scared.

“Are you leaving?””

The question hurt.

“No.””

I knelt down.

“I promise.””

He studied my face.

“People always say that.””

I froze.

Because he was right.

Too many people had promised him things.

And too many people had broken them.

I hugged him.

“I’m not them.””

Slowly, he nodded.

Daniel took him into the other room.

The second Noah was gone, I turned back.

“Elena.””

She looked at me.

“I wrote that.””

“Why?””

“Because I needed you to find it.””

“But you were gone.””

“I knew one day you would uncover the truth.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You left me a puzzle?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I left you a warning.””

“About what?””

Her eyes moved toward Adrian.

Then Vanessa.

Then me.

“About the person who was controlling all of us.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“You still won’t say his name.””

I looked at him.

“Who?””

Elena closed her eyes.

“My father.””

Silence.

My father.

Again.

But this time, it felt different.

Because the man I remembered as my father was changing.

The loving father who taught me to ride a bike.

The man who held my hand after nightmares.

The man who told me family mattered.

That person was disappearing.

And something darker was taking his place.

“You knew he was alive.””

Elena nodded.

“I found out after the accident.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because you weren’t safe.””

“From him?””

She looked at me.

“From yourself.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She took a breath.

“Marcus, after the accident, you weren’t just missing memories.””

My heart tightened.

“What do you mean?””

“You were protecting something.””

I stared.

“I don’t understand.””

She stepped closer.

“You found out your father had been manipulating everyone around him for years.””

My mind flashed.

The folder.

The argument.

The fear.

“You confronted him.””

I swallowed.

“And?””

“He told you something.””

“What?””

She looked toward Noah’s room.

“He told you Noah wasn’t your only child.””

My blood went cold.

“What?””

Adrian looked away.

Vanessa whispered:

“No.””

I turned.

“What does that mean?””

Elena’s voice broke.

“Your father had another secret.””

The room felt like it was spinning.

“Say it.””

She hesitated.

“Your father had a daughter.””

Nobody moved.

“A daughter?””

Elena nodded.

“She was the reason everything started.””

I stared.

“Where is she?””

Elena looked at the door.

At Noah.

Then back at me.

“She’s closer than you think.””

A sound came from the hallway.

Everyone turned.

Noah stood there.

His face was pale.

“Daddy…”

I rushed toward him.

“What happened?””

He pointed behind him.

“There’s someone outside.””

My heart dropped.

Daniel looked through the window.

His face changed.

“What?””

I moved beside him.

A woman stood outside the building.

Watching us.

She looked familiar.

Not because I knew her.

Because Noah did.

He whispered:

“That’s her.””

I looked down.

“Who?””

His voice barely came out.

“The woman from the night Mommy left.””

Elena went completely still.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“You know her?””

She whispered:

“Yes.””

“Who is she?””

May you like

Elena looked terrified.

“She’s your sister.””
