Chapter 6: The Lie We All Believed

I stared at the photograph until the words blurred.

The night Marcus remembers is not the night that happened.

My own name looked unfamiliar.

Like someone else had written it.

Like someone else had been living my life.

“No.””

Daniel took the photo from my hand.

His face changed as he read the back.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

He slowly sat down.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

I pointed at the picture.

“You brought me here. You knew this existed.””

“I knew Elena left something behind.””

“You knew about this?””

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“I didn’t know she kept this.””

I looked at Noah.

He was sitting quietly, holding the wooden box.

Too quiet.

I knelt beside him.

“Buddy.””

He looked up.

“Do you remember this picture?””

He nodded.

“Mommy cried when she showed it to me.””

My chest tightened.

“What did she say?””

He looked down.

“She said Daddy forgot.””

I stopped breathing.

“Forgot what?””

Noah shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

A child shouldn’t have to carry secrets like this.

I took the box.

Inside the recorder was wrapped in a piece of cloth.

There was a label.

Elena’s handwriting.

For Marcus.

My hands shook.

Daniel looked at me.

“You don’t have to listen alone.””

“Yes, I do.””

Because if my entire life was built on a lie, I needed to hear it from the person who knew the truth.

I pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then her voice.

“Elena.””

I closed my eyes.

Even hearing her name from herself hurt.

“Marcus, if you’re hearing this, then something happened.””

Her voice trembled.

“I need you to listen carefully.””

I looked at Noah.

He was staring at the recorder.

“Elena, I never wanted Noah to grow up without you.””

My eyes filled.

“But there was something I discovered.””

The recording crackled.

“Something about the night we lost everything.””

I leaned closer.

“The accident wasn’t an accident.””

The room went silent.

Daniel looked at me.

I felt cold.

Elena continued.

“Someone changed what happened that night.””

My fingers tightened around the recorder.

“And Marcus…”

A pause.

A long one.

Then:

“If you remember seeing me leave…”

My heart stopped.

“Ask yourself why you don’t remember what happened before.””

The recording ended.

Static.

Nothing else.

I stared at the device.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered immediately.

“Who is this?””

A woman’s voice.

Not Elena.

Not Vanessa.

Someone else.

“You found the recording.””

My entire body went still.

“Who are you?””

“You need to stop looking.””

I stood.

“Where is my son’s mother?””

A pause.

Then:

“You still think Elena is the victim?””

My eyes narrowed.

“What are you saying?””

The voice became colder.

“Ask Noah what he remembers after the night his mother disappeared.””

I looked at my son.

“No.””

The caller continued.

“Because the truth is…”

The line went silent.

Then the voice returned.

“…Noah saw everything.””

The call ended.

I lowered the phone slowly.

Noah looked at me.

His face changed.

Like he knew exactly what the caller meant.

“Daddy…”

I swallowed.

“What?””

He whispered:

“Mommy told me never to tell you.””

My heart broke.

“Tell me what?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“The person who hurt her…”

He looked toward the doorway.

May you like

Toward the darkness outside.

“…was someone you brought home.””
