Chapter 12: The Father I Thought I Lost

The recording continued.

Static.

Then my father’s voice again.

“Your mother tried to tell you.””

I stopped breathing.

My father.

A man I had mourned for years.

A man I believed was gone.

Speaking.

Alive.

I looked at Elena.

“What is this?””

She didn’t answer.

I looked at Adrian.

He looked down.

“You knew.””

He didn’t deny it.

“I knew he survived.””

The room spun.

“My father survived?””

Adrian nodded.

“And he was the reason everything happened.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

My entire life was built on certain things.

My parents died.

My brother died.

Elena left.

Those were the foundations of my reality.

And now every single one was collapsing.

Elena moved closer.

“Marcus, listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“No, because every time someone says that, another piece of my life disappears.””

She stopped.

I pressed play again.

My father’s voice filled the room.

“Marcus, you don’t understand what you found.””

A younger version of my own voice answered.

“What did you do?””

My body froze.

Because that was me.

A memory.

My own voice.

Angry.

Afraid.

“You lied to us.””

My father replied:

“I protected this family.””

The younger me said:

“You destroyed it.””

I closed my eyes.

Fragments returned.

My father standing in the kitchen.

Elena beside me.

Adrian near the doorway.

A folder on the table.

“What was in the folder?”” I whispered.

Elena answered quietly.

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

She looked at me.

“That your father built his entire company using stolen identities and hidden accounts.””

I stared.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“That’s what he wanted you to believe.””

The recording continued.

My younger voice said:

“What about Noah?””

My father answered:

“Children forget.””

The room went silent.

I felt sick.

My son heard it too.

He covered his ears.

I immediately turned it off.

“No.””

I picked him up.

“No more.””

I held him tightly.

“You don’t have to hear this.””

He buried his face against me.

“I remember Daddy.””

I closed my eyes.

“I know.””

“No.””

His voice shook.

“I remember you trying to save Mommy.””

I froze.

“What?””

Everyone looked at him.

Noah lifted his head.

“You weren’t angry.””

My heart stopped.

“What do you mean?””

“You were scared.””

He looked at Elena.

“Mommy told you to run.””

Elena started crying.

Because she knew.

The memory was coming back.

Not everything.

Pieces.

But enough.

I remembered.

The kitchen.

My father.

The folder.

The argument.

Then the sound.

A crash.

A scream.

Elena grabbing Noah.

Me falling.

And someone saying:

“You’ll thank me when you forget.””

I grabbed my head.

The pain was overwhelming.

Adrian caught me before I fell.

“Marcus.””

I pushed him away.

“Who said that?””

Nobody answered.

“Who?””

Vanessa looked terrified.

Elena whispered:

“It was him.””

I looked at her.

“Who?””

She pointed at the recording.

“At your father.””

I stared.

“But he’s dead.””

Elena shook her head.

“No.””

My phone suddenly buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

A photo appeared.

A recent photo.

Taken minutes ago.

It showed all of us inside the building.

Then another message appeared.

“You’re getting close.””

My hands shook.

Then a final message.

“He was never the final threat.””

I looked up.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel looked at the photograph from earlier.

The one of Noah as a toddler.

His face changed.

“Wait.””

“What?””

He grabbed it.

Turned it over.

His eyes widened.

“Marcus…”

“What?””

He pointed at the handwriting.

The note.

The warning.

The words Vanessa wrote.

Except now Daniel noticed something else.

Something hidden beneath the ink.

A second message.

A message nobody had seen.

He whispered:

“This wasn’t written by Vanessa.””

I stepped closer.

“What?””

Daniel looked at me.

“It was written by Elena.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Elena.

Her face lost all color.

May you like

And for the first time…

she looked afraid of the truth too.
