Chapter 8: The Woman Behind the Door

The voice echoed through the empty building.

My body froze.

Because I knew that voice.

Not from memory.

Not from a recording.

From my life.

“Mom?””

Noah whispered.

My heart stopped.

The hallway remained dark.

Nobody moved.

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

“Marcus, wait.””

I pulled away.

“Don’t touch me.””

The voice came again.

“Marcus.””

This time closer.

I grabbed my phone and turned on the flashlight.

“Noah, stay behind me.””

I moved down the hallway.

Every step felt heavier.

Daniel followed.

Vanessa stayed behind.

The old building creaked around us.

Then I saw her.

Standing at the end of the hallway.

A woman.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Elena.

My mind couldn’t process it.

For years, I had imagined this moment.

I imagined anger.

Questions.

Pain.

But seeing her standing there was different.

Because a part of me still loved her.

And another part of me hated her.

She took one step forward.

“Marcus.””

I couldn’t speak.

She started crying.

“I’m sorry.””

Those two words broke something in me.

I laughed quietly.

“You’re sorry?””

Her face fell.

“I know.””

“You’re sorry?””

My voice rose.

“You let me bury you.””

“I didn’t.””

“You let our son believe you were gone.””

“I was trying to protect him.””

“You abandoned him.””

She flinched.

Because I knew it hurt.

Good.

I wanted her to feel something.

Anything.

“You have no idea what I lost.””

Elena wiped her tears.

“I know exactly what you lost.””

“Then why?””

“Because I saw what happened to you.””

I stopped.

“What?””

She stepped closer.

“You weren’t yourself after that night.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Elena, tell him.””

She nodded.

“I tried.””

I stared.

“Tried what?””

“To tell you.””

She looked at Vanessa.

“But someone stopped me.””

My eyes moved between them.

“No.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Marcus…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I’m done with everyone knowing things except me.””

Elena looked at me.

“You deserve the truth.””

“Then give it to me.””

She took a deep breath.

“The night I disappeared, I came home and found you in the kitchen.””

I swallowed.

“I remember.””

“No, Marcus.””

Her voice softened.

“You remember what someone wanted you to remember.””

The words hit me.

She continued.

“You were holding your head. You were confused.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“You kept asking where Noah was.””

I looked toward my son.

“Noah was asleep.””

Elena shook her head.

“No.””

The room went silent.

“He wasn’t.””

My heart started racing.

“What are you saying?””

She looked at Noah.

“I found him hiding upstairs.””

Noah lowered his head.

“He saw something.””

I knelt beside him.

“Buddy?””

He whispered:

“Mommy told me not to look.””

My breath caught.

“Look at what?””

Noah’s eyes filled.

“At Daddy.””

I froze.

“What?””

Elena closed her eyes.

“That’s why I left.””

I stood.

“You think I hurt you?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

She looked at me.

“I think someone made you think you did.””

Nobody spoke.

Because the idea was impossible.

But somehow…

It felt familiar.

My hand moved to my watch.

The one Noah recognized.

Elena noticed.

“You still wear it.””

I looked at her.

“Why wouldn’t I?””

Her face became painful.

“Because it wasn’t yours.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She stepped closer.

“Marcus, that watch belonged to someone else.””

My blood went cold.

“What are you talking about?””

She looked at Vanessa.

“Tell him.””

Vanessa looked away.

“Elena…”

“Tell him.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“That night…”

She swallowed.

“That watch was on someone else’s wrist.””

I felt dizzy.

“Whose?””

Nobody answered.

Then Noah spoke.

Small.

Quiet.

Certain.

“The man in the kitchen.””

I looked at Elena.

Then Vanessa.

Then Daniel.

“Who was he?””

Elena’s face changed.

Like she was afraid of the answer.

Then she said:

“Your brother.””

I stared.

My brother.

The one who died eight years ago.

The one whose funeral I attended.

The one I remembered saying goodbye to.

“No.””

Elena’s eyes filled with tears.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“My brother is dead.””

Elena whispered:

“That’s what you were told.””

The lights flickered.

And outside the building, a car engine started.

Everyone turned.

Daniel rushed to the window.

His face went pale.

“What?””

I moved beside him.

A black SUV sat outside.

The same model as Vanessa’s.

The driver’s door opened.

A man stepped out.

I couldn’t see his face.

But I saw the watch on his wrist.

The same one Noah remembered.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man’s voice spoke.

“Hello, little brother.””
