Chapter 14: The Daughter My Father Hid

Nobody spoke.

Not one person.

Because some truths are too large to understand immediately.

Your sister.

Those words repeated in my head.

A sister I never knew existed.

A woman standing outside a building.

A woman my son remembered.

A woman connected to the night that destroyed my family.

“No.””

The word came out automatically.

Elena looked at me.

“I wish it wasn’t true.””

I shook my head.

“My father didn’t have another child.””

“You didn’t know.””

“I knew my family.””

She looked at me sadly.

“Did you?””

That question hurt because I didn’t have an answer.

I had spent years believing I knew everything.

And I knew nothing.

The woman outside didn’t move.

She just watched.

Like she was waiting for me to understand.

Adrian walked toward the door.

“Don’t.””

I stopped him.

“Why?””

“Because she’s dangerous.””

I looked at him.

“You know her.””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“You knew.””

Adrian sighed.

“Yes.””

“Everyone knew.””

His face tightened.

“Not everyone.””

I looked at Elena.

She looked away.

I felt anger rising again.

“How long?””

Elena whispered:

“Since before we met.””

I stared.

“You knew about my sister before you married me?””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing?””

“Because I didn’t know if she was involved.””

“Was she?””

Elena looked toward the door.

“I don’t know.””

That answer was becoming unbearable.

I opened the door.

“Marcus!””

I ignored them.

The woman outside stepped back.

For a moment, we just looked at each other.

She had my father’s eyes.

I knew immediately.

Not because someone told me.

Because something inside me recognized her.

“My name is Claire.””

Her voice was soft.

“I know who you are.””

I swallowed.

“Why are you here?””

She looked past me.

At Elena.

At Adrian.

At Vanessa.

Then at Noah.

“Because the truth is finally coming out.””

I stepped outside.

“Tell me.””

Claire looked at me.

“Our father didn’t die in an accident.””

“I know.””

“He planned everything.””

“I know.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“No, Marcus.””

She shook her head.

“You know pieces.””

She stepped closer.

“You don’t know the reason.””

“What reason?””

Her expression changed.

Pain.

Not anger.

Pain.

“Because he was trying to protect me.””

The words shocked me.

“What?””

Claire looked down.

“He wasn’t just a monster.””

Nobody spoke.

“He was trying to expose something bigger.””

Elena stepped outside.

“That’s not true.””

Claire looked at her.

“You still believe that?””

“You helped him.””

Claire’s face hardened.

“And you helped destroy him.””

The accusation hit.

I looked between them.

“What happened?””

Claire took a breath.

“Our father discovered someone inside his company was stealing from him.””

“Who?””

She looked directly at Vanessa.

Everyone froze.

Vanessa stepped back.

“No.””

Claire continued.

“She wasn’t working alone.””

My eyes moved toward Vanessa.

Then Adrian.

Then Elena.

“Who else?””

Claire looked at me.

“Someone you trusted.””

The same phrase.

Again.

I was tired of secrets.

“TELL ME.””

Claire finally said:

“Your father discovered Elena’s family was connected to the theft.””

Elena went pale.

“That’s a lie.””

Claire shook her head.

“He confronted you.””

“No.””

“He found out you were hiding something.””

Elena looked at me.

“Marcus, listen—”

Claire continued.

“And that night, you didn’t disappear because someone attacked you.””

I stared.

“Then why?””

Claire looked at me.

“Because you found out Elena had been working with your father.””

My chest tightened.

“No.””

Elena’s eyes filled.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

Claire’s voice softened.

“You don’t remember because you asked Adrian to help you forget.””

I looked at Adrian.

“You were helping me?””

He nodded.

“I was trying to save you.””

“From what?””

Adrian looked at Elena.

“From the truth.””

I turned.

The person I loved.

The person I trusted.

The person who had returned from the dead.

I whispered:

“Elena.””

She cried.

“I never wanted to hurt you.””

“Then why?””

She stepped closer.

“Because I found out your father wasn’t the person controlling everything.””

A pause.

“He was being controlled too.””

The wind moved through the doorway.

Everyone went silent.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From the unknown number.

One final sentence.

“Ask Elena who Noah’s real father is.””

My hands went cold.

I looked at my son.

Then at Elena.

And I asked the question I never thought I would ask.

“Elena…”

May you like

My voice broke.

“What aren’t you telling me about Noah?””
