Chapter 9: The Brother Who Never Died

I dropped the phone.

Not because I wanted to.

Because my hands stopped working.

The voice.

The words.

The impossible reality standing outside that building.

It all collided at once.

Little brother.

Nobody had called me that in years.

Not since the funeral.

Not since the day I watched a coffin lowered into the ground.

“No.””

Elena stepped closer.

“Marcus.””

I backed away.

“No.””

My mind rejected it.

My heart rejected it.

But my memory…

My memory was the only thing I could no longer trust.

The man outside walked toward the building.

Slowly.

Confidently.

Like he belonged there.

Like he had been waiting for this moment.

Daniel locked the door.

“Who is he?””

Nobody answered.

Vanessa looked terrified.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

I turned toward her.

“You knew.””

Her eyes filled.

“I suspected.””

“You knew.””

“I wasn’t sure.””

“You knew enough.””

She looked at Elena.

“You should have told him sooner.””

Elena’s face hardened.

“I tried.””

“And you disappeared.””

“Because someone was watching me.””

I looked between them.

“Stop.””

Both women stopped.

“I need the truth.””

The footsteps outside got closer.

I stared at the door.

“Now.””

Elena took a breath.

“Your brother didn’t die.””

The words still sounded impossible.

“His name?””

She hesitated.

Then:

“Adrian.””

I closed my eyes.

Adrian.

My little brother.

Two years younger.

The person who followed me everywhere.

The person who used to say he wanted to become exactly like me.

The person I buried.

“No.””

Elena touched my arm.

“Marcus.””

I pulled away.

“I saw the body.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“I went to the funeral.””

“Yes.””

“I watched them lower the coffin.””

“Yes.””

“Then how?””

Elena looked at Vanessa.

“She knows.””

I turned.

Vanessa looked broken.

“I found out after I married you.””

My anger returned.

“And you stayed?””

“I stayed because Noah needed someone.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You stayed because you were hiding something.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I was.””

The door handle moved.

Everyone froze.

A slow turn.

Once.

Twice.

Then stopped.

The person outside knew we were there.

He wanted us to know he was there too.

Elena whispered:

“He’s always been good at that.””

“At what?””

“Making people afraid before he even enters the room.””

The door opened.

Slowly.

A man stepped inside.

Older than I remembered.

But impossible to mistake.

The same eyes.

The same smile.

Adrian.

My brother.

Alive.

He looked at me.

And smiled.

“Hey, Marcus.””

Nobody spoke.

I couldn’t.

He looked around the room.

Then at Noah.

“So this is my nephew.””

I moved instantly.

Standing between him and my son.

“Stay away from him.””

Adrian’s smile faded.

“That hurts.””

“You’re dead.””

He laughed softly.

“Am I?””

I stared.

“What did you do?””

His expression changed.

“You really don’t remember.””

The same words.

Again.

Everyone kept saying them.

Like they were waiting for me to understand.

I shook my head.

“Remember what?””

Adrian stepped closer.

“The night Elena disappeared.””

I clenched my fists.

“What about it?””

He looked at Vanessa.

Then Elena.

Then me.

“You think I took something from you.””

He smiled sadly.

“But Marcus…”

He pointed at my head.

“You already lost it.””

I felt sick.

“What did you do to me?””

Adrian looked almost offended.

“I saved you.””

“Saved me?””

“Yes.””

“From what?””

He glanced at Noah.

“From the truth.””

My son grabbed my hand.

Adrian noticed.

And his expression softened.

That scared me more than anger.

Because it looked real.

“I loved him too.””

I stepped forward.

“Don’t say that.””

“He was my nephew.””

“You scared him.””

Adrian looked confused.

“What?””

“You made him afraid.””

His face changed.

“No.””

A quiet word.

Almost hurt.

“I never touched Noah.””

“Then why does he remember you?””

Adrian looked at Noah.

And Noah immediately hid behind me.

That reaction said everything.

Adrian lowered his eyes.

“Because he saw what happened.””

The room went silent.

I whispered:

“What happened?””

Adrian looked directly at me.

“The night Elena left…”

He paused.

“…you were the one who asked her to go.””

My entire body went cold.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“You’re lying.””

Adrian shook his head.

“You don’t remember because you begged me to make you forget.””

I stared at him.

The world tilted.

“Why would I do that?””

Adrian’s expression became serious.

“Because you found out what Elena was hiding.””

“What?””

He looked at Noah.

Then at the photograph.

Then back at me.

“She wasn’t running from you.””

A pause.

“She was running from what she did.””

Elena stepped forward.

“That’s a lie.””

Adrian smiled.

“Is it?””

Then he reached into his coat.

Pulled out a small envelope.

And placed it on the table.

The label on the front had one word.

NOAH.

Adrian looked at me.

“You want the truth?””

He tapped the envelope.

“Open this.””

I stared at it.

And I knew.

Whatever was inside would finally answer the question that destroyed my family.

But it might also prove the one thing I couldn’t accept.

May you like

That the person I trusted most…

was the person who started it all.
