Chapter 10: The Inheritance Nobody Wanted Me to Have
The word sat on the document like a threat.
Inheritance.
I stared at it.
Not because I understood it.
Because everyone else looked terrified.
Dad.
Vanessa.
Renee.
Even Adrian.
Everyone except me.
“What is this?””
My voice sounded small.
Nobody answered.
I looked at Adrian.
“You came into my house, called me by a name I’ve never used, and dropped a document in front of me.””
I pointed at the paper.
“So explain.””
Adrian studied me for a moment.
Then he nodded.
“You’re right.””
Dad stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
Adrian ignored him.
“Maya, your biological father, Daniel Carter, left something behind.””
I frowned.
“Money?””
“No.””
“Property?””
“No.””
“Then what?””
Adrian looked at the document.
“Control.””
The word made no sense.
“Control of what?””
He looked toward Dad.
“Everything Daniel spent his life building.””
Dad’s expression hardened.
“Don’t twist this.””
“I’m not twisting anything.””
Adrian tapped the paper.
“Daniel uncovered financial crimes within the Carter family. He documented everything.””
Renee nodded slowly.
“He was going to expose them.””
“And that made him a target,” Adrian said.
I looked at him.
“Are you saying my father died because of that?””
The room went silent.
Nobody wanted to answer.
That was answer enough.
My chest tightened.
Dad immediately stepped toward me.
“Maya.””
I pulled away.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“How long have you known?””
His face fell.
“Known what?””
“That my life was connected to this.””
He swallowed.
“Since you were born.””
The honesty hurt more than another lie.
I laughed quietly.
“So everyone knew except me.””
“Maya.””
“No.””
I backed away.
“You all protected me so much that you forgot I was a person.””
Vanessa started crying silently.
Dad looked devastated.
But I couldn’t stop.
Sixteen years of questions were finally coming out.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me my name was supposed to be Carter?””
“Because we wanted you safe,” Dad said.
“Safe from what?””
He looked at Adrian.
Nobody answered.
I turned toward Adrian.
“You know, don’t you?””
He didn’t speak.
“Tell me.””
Adrian sighed.
“The Carter family has influence. Money. Connections.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He looked directly at me.
“Someone inside that family wanted Daniel’s information destroyed.””
“And?””
“And if they knew Daniel had a child…”
He stopped.
My stomach twisted.
“They would come after me.””
Nobody denied it.
The kitchen became painfully quiet.
Then I noticed something.
The broken trophy.
Still sitting on the counter.
Still cracked.
I picked it up.
“This is why.””
Everyone looked at me.
“This is why someone tried to ruin my scholarship.””
Adrian nodded.
“Yes.””
“Because they were afraid I’d leave?””
“Because they were afraid you’d become visible.””
I stared at him.
“What does my scholarship have to do with visibility?””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“Your university is connected to a legal research program.””
“So?””
“Students selected for that program gain access to historical case files.””
I felt a chill.
“They thought I would find something.””
“Yes.””
Dad grabbed the document.
“Enough.””
Adrian looked at him.
“You don’t get to decide when she knows the truth anymore.””
The two men stared at each other.
Old anger.
Old history.
Something I didn’t understand.
Then Vanessa spoke.
Quietly.
“There’s more.””
Everyone turned.
Dad looked at her.
“What?””
She wiped her eyes.
“I didn’t throw away Maya’s trophy because I thought she was arrogant.””
My heart stopped.
“Then why?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Because I received a warning.””
The room froze.
“What warning?””
She walked to the cabinet.
Opened the drawer.
Pulled out her phone.
“I got this three days ago.””
She handed it to Dad.
He read the message.
Then his face changed.
“What does it say?”” I asked.
He didn’t respond.
I took the phone.
The message was from an unknown number.
*Stop helping Maya.*
*Stop preparing her for college.*
*Stop asking questions.*
*Or she loses everything.*
I looked up.
“You were threatened.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell Dad?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because the last person who threatened your family ended up dead.””
Nobody moved.
The sentence was quiet.
But it changed the entire room.
Dad whispered:
“Vanessa…”
She looked at him.
“I was scared.””
For the first time, I believed her.
Not completely.
Not yet.
But enough.
Adrian reached for the document.
“There’s one more thing you need to see.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He flipped the page.
At the bottom was a signature.
A legal witness.
Someone who had helped hide my identity.
Someone who knew everything.
I leaned closer.
Then I stopped.
Because I recognized the name.
The signature belonged to someone who had been in my life every single day.
May you like
Someone I trusted.
Someone I never thought would be part of the secret.
