Chapter 3: The Envelope Nobody Was Supposed to Find

The next morning, I woke up before my alarm.

I stared at the ceiling for almost an hour.

Usually, scholarship mornings were supposed to feel different.

I imagined celebrating.

Calling my friends.

Taking pictures.

My dad telling everyone he was proud.

Instead, I was lying in bed wondering if someone in my own house had tried to steal my future.

The scholarship letter sat on my desk.

I had read it twelve times.

Full tuition.

Four years.

My dream school.

A door opening.

And someone trying to close it before I could walk through.

At breakfast, nobody spoke.

The kitchen looked exactly the same.

That was the strangest part.

The sunlight still hit the marble island.

The coffee machine still hummed.

The expensive decorations still sat perfectly in place.

But the family inside the room had changed.

Dad stood by the counter holding his phone.

Vanessa sat across from me.

She looked tired.

Not guilty.

Not innocent.

Just tired.

“Maya,” Dad said.

I looked up.

“I need to ask you something.””

“What?””

“Did Vanessa ever talk to you about the scholarship before yesterday?””

I looked at Vanessa.

Her eyes moved away.

“No.””

Dad nodded slowly.

“Did she ever suggest you shouldn’t apply?””

My stomach tightened.

A memory came back.

A few months earlier.

Vanessa standing in my bedroom doorway.

“You’re putting too much pressure on yourself, Maya.””

“You don’t need to chase every impossible dream.””

At the time, I thought she was worried.

Now I wasn’t sure.

“She told me I was expecting too much.””

Dad looked at Vanessa.

“Why?””

Vanessa placed her fork down.

“Because I was trying to protect her.””

“From what?””

“Disappointment.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

“She wasn’t protecting me.””

My voice became stronger.

“She was preparing me to fail.””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“That’s unfair.””

“Is it?””

I pointed toward the broken trophy.

“You didn’t say I should be realistic. You didn’t tell me to work harder. You threw away the proof that I succeeded.””

Dad closed his eyes for a moment.

Like he was trying to control his anger.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

The color disappeared from his face.

“Who is it?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

He stepped away.

“Hello?””

I watched him listen.

His expression changed.

Confusion.

Then anger.

Then shock.

“What do you mean you received another message?””

My heart raced.

Another message?

Dad walked toward the window.

“Yes, I’m her father.””

A pause.

“No, I didn’t authorize any withdrawal request.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was staring at the floor.

Dad’s voice became quieter.

“Can you send me the records?””

Another pause.

Then:

“Thank you.””

He hung up.

Nobody moved.

“What happened?”” I asked.

Dad slowly placed his phone on the table.

“The university received a second request.””

My throat tightened.

“From who?””

He looked at Vanessa.

She stood immediately.

“Marcus.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“They said the request came from someone inside this house.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Dad reached into his pocket.

“I need the truth.””

She stepped backward.

“I already told you.””

“No.””

He placed something on the counter.

A printed record.

“A person lied once.””

Vanessa stared at the paper.

“A second lie doesn’t make the first one disappear.””

I looked between them.

The room felt like it was waiting.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“You don’t understand what you’re looking at.””

Dad’s eyes narrowed.

“Then help me understand.””

She didn’t move.

She didn’t speak.

And that scared me more than anything.

Because Vanessa always had an answer.

Always.

Until now.

Dad picked up the record.

At the bottom of the page was a name.

A name connected to the scholarship request.

A name that made his face change.

He looked at me.

Then at Vanessa.

“Maya…”

I stepped closer.

“What?””

Dad slowly turned the paper around.

I saw the name.

And my heart dropped.

May you like

Because the person who had tried to destroy my scholarship…

Was someone I never expected.
