Chapter 12: The Third Name
The paper fell onto the marble island.
Nobody reached for it.
Nobody wanted to.
Because sometimes you already know the truth before you read it.
You can feel it coming.
Like a storm.
I stared at the name.
A name that belonged to someone I had never met.
Someone connected to my existence.
Someone my mother had never mentioned.
“Who is that?””
My voice was barely audible.
Dad looked at the page.
His face had gone completely blank.
“Maya…”
I hated hearing my name like that.
Like I was something fragile.
Like the truth might break me.
“Tell me.””
Adrian looked at Marcus.
“Was this the secret?””
Dad didn’t answer.
Vanessa whispered:
“Yes.””
I looked at her.
“You knew?””
She nodded slowly.
“I knew there was another name.””
My heart sank.
“You all knew.””
Nobody defended themselves.
The silence was enough.
I picked up the paper.
The handwriting was my mother’s.
I recognized it from birthday cards.
From old letters.
The words were written carefully.
Almost like she knew one day I would find them.
*If you are reading this, it means the truth could no longer be hidden.*
My hands shook.
I continued.
*Maya, I need you to understand something. Your father loved you. Marcus loved you. But before Marcus became your protector, there was another person who changed everything.*
I stopped.
My eyes moved to the name.
A man.
Someone I had never heard of.
I looked up.
“Who was he?””
Dad finally answered.
“His name was Elijah Carter.””
Adrian’s face changed.
“Elijah?””
The way he said it made everyone look at him.
“You know him?””
Adrian looked away.
“He was my uncle.””
The room went cold.
I looked at the page again.
My mother’s words continued.
*Elijah knew about Daniel’s investigation. He knew about the evidence. He knew about Maya.*
My breathing became shallow.
“He knew about me?””
Dad nodded.
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t he come for me?””
Nobody answered.
Until Adrian said:
“Because he didn’t want to protect you.””
The sentence cut through the room.
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
Adrian looked at the document.
“Elijah believed Daniel betrayed the family.””
“And?””
“He believed anything Daniel left behind belonged to him.””
My fingers tightened around the paper.
“The inheritance.””
Adrian nodded.
“Yes.””
Everything connected.
The scholarship.
The identity investigation.
The warnings.
Someone wasn’t trying to stop me from succeeding.
They were trying to stop me from becoming someone who could claim what Daniel left.
Dad looked at me.
“Maya, listen.””
I looked at him.
“I’m listening.””
“There’s something else.””
Of course there was.
Another secret.
Another hidden piece.
“What?””
Dad took a breath.
“The scholarship committee didn’t just receive a request to withdraw your acceptance.””
My stomach tightened.
“What else?””
“They received a legal challenge.””
“About what?””
He looked at Adrian.
Adrian answered.
“About whether you are legally Daniel Carter’s daughter.””
I felt dizzy.
“They’re trying to say I’m not?””
“Yes.””
“But I am.””
“Yes.””
“Then why?””
“Because if they prove you’re not legally connected to Daniel…”
He stopped.
I finished the sentence.
“I lose the inheritance.””
Nobody spoke.
Because that was the answer.
The scholarship was never the target.
I was.
My identity was.
My future.
My connection to Daniel.
The doorbell suddenly rang.
Everyone froze.
Again.
Dad looked toward the entrance.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He didn’t answer.
The doorbell rang a second time.
Then a third.
Adrian moved toward the window.
His expression changed.
“What is it?””
He didn’t respond.
“Adrian?””
He looked back at us.
“There are two cars outside.””
My heart started racing.
“Who is here?””
Adrian’s face was pale.
“People who don’t want you reading that letter.””
Dad immediately moved in front of me.
Vanessa grabbed my arm.
And then someone knocked.
Slowly.
Three times.
A voice came from the other side of the door.
A voice I had never heard before.
But somehow…
Everyone else recognized it.
“Marcus.””
Dad froze.
The voice continued.
“Open the door.””
A pause.
“Your daughter deserves to meet her family.””
Dad whispered one word.
May you like
A name.
“Elijah.””
