Chapter 13: The Man Who Owned the Secret
The knocking continued.
Slow.
Patient.
Confident.
The kind of knocking that didn’t ask permission.
It expected obedience.
Dad stood between me and the door.
I had never seen him like that before.
Not angry.
Not scared.
Ready.
“Stay behind me,” he whispered.
I stared at him.
“No.””
He looked back.
“Maya.””
“I’m done standing behind people.””
For sixteen years, everyone had built walls around me.
Now those walls were collapsing.
I wasn’t going to hide while they explained my own life.
Adrian moved closer to the door.
“Elijah won’t come here unless he thinks he has control.””
Dad looked at him.
“You brought this to her.””
Adrian’s face tightened.
“I brought her the truth.””
“You brought danger.””
“No.””
Adrian looked toward the door.
“The danger was already here.””
Vanessa held my arm.
Her fingers were trembling.
I noticed.
The woman who had always seemed untouchable was terrified.
“Vanessa.””
She looked at me.
“What?””
“Did you know he would come?””
Her eyes filled.
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
I studied her face.
And for the first time, I realized something.
Vanessa wasn’t just hiding secrets.
She had been living with fear.
The lock turned.
Dad immediately moved.
But the door opened before he could reach it.
An older man stood there.
Tall.
Silver hair.
Expensive coat.
Calm eyes.
He looked exactly like someone who had spent his entire life getting whatever he wanted.
His gaze moved around the room.
Then stopped on me.
“Maya.””
I hated how easily strangers said my name.
Like they owned a piece of me.
“I’m Elijah Carter.””
Nobody spoke.
He smiled slightly.
“You look like your mother.””
Dad stepped forward.
“Leave.””
Elijah looked amused.
“Still protecting her.””
“She doesn’t need you.””
Elijah looked at me.
“That’s where you’re wrong.””
I crossed my arms.
“Why are you here?””
His smile faded.
“Because you’ve been given a very incomplete version of the truth.””
I almost laughed.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I pointed around the room.
“Apparently my whole life is an incomplete version.””
Elijah studied me.
“You’re angry.””
“Yes.””
“Good.””
That surprised me.
“Good?””
“Yes.””
He walked slowly into the kitchen.
Dad immediately followed.
“You don’t get to walk in here.””
Elijah ignored him.
“Anger means you’re thinking.””
He looked at the broken trophy.
Then smiled sadly.
“Daniel would have been proud.””
The mention of my biological father made my stomach tighten.
“You knew him.””
“Yes.””
“Did you hate him?””
Elijah paused.
“No.””
The answer surprised everyone.
“I respected him.””
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“You destroyed him.””
Elijah turned.
“Careful.””
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“You know what happened.””
“I know what Daniel chose.””
“What he chose?””
Adrian stepped forward.
“He chose the truth.””
Elijah looked at him.
“And look where that got him.””
The room went silent.
I felt cold.
Because Elijah didn’t deny it.
He didn’t deny knowing what happened.
“You knew he was in danger.””
Elijah looked at me.
“Yes.””
“And you did nothing?””
His expression changed slightly.
“I made a mistake.””
“A mistake?””
My voice rose.
“My father died.””
Elijah looked down.
For a moment, he looked human.
Then it disappeared.
“Daniel believed exposing the truth would fix everything.””
“And you didn’t?””
“No.””
“Why?””
He looked at the documents on the table.
“Because powerful people don’t disappear just because you expose them.””
I hated that part of me understood what he meant.
But understanding wasn’t forgiveness.
“So you targeted me.””
Elijah’s eyes narrowed.
“I did not target you.””
“You challenged my identity.””
“Because I needed to know if the evidence was real.””
“You tried to take away my scholarship.””
His face changed.
“I never touched your scholarship.””
Everyone looked at him.
Dad laughed once.
“Expect us to believe that?””
Elijah looked at Vanessa.
Then at the envelopes.
“Your scholarship was attacked by someone else.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Elijah nodded.
“The person who called the university was not working for me.””
“Then who?””
He looked around the room.
And everyone became still.
“No.””
Dad’s voice was quiet.
Elijah looked at him.
“Yes.””
My eyes moved between them.
“What?””
Elijah reached into his coat.
Pulled out a folder.
And placed it on the island.
“The person who tried to destroy Maya’s scholarship…”
He looked directly at me.
“Was trying to protect a different secret.””
I opened the folder.
Inside was a photograph.
A security image.
A person entering the university office.
The face was partially visible.
But I recognized the clothing.
The posture.
The shape of the person.
My hand went cold.
“No.””
Dad looked at the photo.
May you like
And whispered:
“Vanessa.””
