Chapter 14: The Choice Vanessa Made

Nobody moved.

The photograph sat between us.

A piece of evidence.

A piece of betrayal.

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked back at me.

And the worst part was…

She didn’t deny it.

“Tell me it’s not true.””

My voice cracked.

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“Maya.””

“Tell me.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Dad looked devastated.

“Vanessa.””

She closed her eyes.

“I didn’t want it to happen this way.””

My chest tightened.

“You did call them?””

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

“I didn’t make the call.””

“Then why are you in the photo?””

She looked at the image.

“I went there.””

“Why?””

She swallowed.

“Because I wanted to stop it.””

Everyone went silent.

I stared.

“You went there after someone contacted them?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell us?””

“Because I found out too late.””

Dad stepped forward.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“It means someone used me.””

The anger in Dad’s face softened slightly.

“Explain.””

She walked toward the table.

“I received a message telling me there was a problem with Maya’s scholarship.””

She looked at me.

“They said if I didn’t go to the university and convince them there was an issue with the application, something worse would happen.””

“What?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then whispered:

“They threatened to expose Daniel’s identity.””

The room became silent.

I looked at her.

“You were trying to hide my father.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I knew what would happen if his enemies found out you were connected to him.””

I looked at Dad.

“Did you know?””

He nodded slowly.

“Some of it.””

I closed my eyes.

Another secret.

Another person who knew.

Vanessa continued.

“I went there to protect you.””

“But you didn’t tell me.””

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

She looked at me.

“That you would hate me.””

The honesty hurt.

Because I wanted to hate her.

It would have been easier.

But now I saw something complicated.

A person who had made terrible choices while trying to do something she believed was right.

That didn’t erase what she did.

But it changed the shape of it.

Elijah watched quietly.

Then spoke.

“This is why you cannot trust anyone blindly.””

Dad turned toward him.

“You’re enjoying this.””

“No.””

Elijah looked at him.

“I’m watching the consequences of years of secrets.””

The words hit everyone.

Because they were true.

Then Adrian grabbed the folder.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at him.

He pulled out another page.

“This doesn’t make sense.””

“What?””

He pointed.

“The university received the withdrawal request before Vanessa arrived.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

He looked at Vanessa.

“You couldn’t have made the first move.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I didn’t.””

Adrian looked at the documents.

“Then someone else started this.””

Dad looked at the papers.

“Who?””

Adrian turned another page.

His face changed.

“No.””

“What?””

He handed the document to me.

At the bottom was a digital record.

The original sender.

The first request.

The first person who tried to cancel my acceptance.

I read the name.

And my heart dropped.

Because it wasn’t Vanessa.

It wasn’t Elijah.

It wasn’t anyone from the Carter family.

It was someone who had been standing beside me my entire life.

Someone who had protected me.

Someone who had raised me.

Marcus Johnson.

I looked at Dad.

He looked like he couldn’t breathe.

“No.””

My voice was barely there.

“Dad.””

He shook his head.

“Maya, I swear to you—”

But before he could finish, Elijah interrupted.

“Look closer.””

I looked down.

The signature.

The account.

The authorization.

Something was wrong.

The name was Marcus Johnson.

But the date was sixteen years ago.

Before I was old enough to even understand what a scholarship was.

Adrian’s eyes widened.

“This isn’t a recent request.””

“What is it?””

He looked at the document.

“It’s an old legal authorization.””

Dad whispered:

“Someone used my identity.””

The room went silent.

I looked at the person who had always protected me.

For the first time, I saw something else.

A man who had also been used.

Then my phone buzzed.

Everyone froze.

A new message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

*You finally found the wrong enemy.*

May you like

Then another message appeared.

*Now ask Marcus what he did the night Daniel Carter disappeared.*
