Chapter 6: The Truth Behind the Silence
I stopped breathing.
Not literally.
But that was what it felt like.
The kitchen.
The office.
The entire house disappeared.
There was only one sentence.
It’s about who you really are.
I looked at Dad.
Waiting for him to laugh.
Waiting for him to say Vanessa was confused.
Waiting for him to tell me this was some terrible misunderstanding.
He didn’t.
And that silence destroyed me.
“Dad?””
He looked at me.
“Maya…”
“No.””
My voice shook.
“Don’t say my name like that.””
He stood.
“I need you to listen.””
“Listen to what?””
My eyes filled with tears.
“That my whole life was a lie?””
“No.””
“Then tell me what this means.””
Nobody answered.
Vanessa looked away.
Dad walked toward the window.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then:
“When you were born…”
I felt my stomach drop.
“No.””
He turned.
“Maya.””
“No.””
I backed away.
“I don’t want a speech.””
“You deserve the truth.””
“Then give it.””
His jaw tightened.
“When you were born, there were things your mother and I never told you.””
My chest hurt.
“My mother?””
Dad nodded slowly.
“You know your mother loved you.””
“Don’t.””
“She did.””
“Then why are we talking like she did something wrong?””
Vanessa looked down.
Dad closed his eyes.
Because he knew.
He knew this conversation was going to change everything.
“Your mother made a decision before she passed away.””
“What decision?””
He didn’t answer.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Did you know?””
She whispered:
“Yes.””
The room became silent.
“You knew?””
“I found out after I married your father.””
“And you stayed?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because I promised him I would.””
I looked at Dad.
“Promised him what?””
Dad couldn’t look at me.
That hurt more than anything.
Because my father had always looked me in the eye.
Until now.
A knock came at the front door.
All three of us froze.
Nobody expected anyone.
Dad walked toward the entrance.
“Maya, stay here.””
I followed.
“No.””
He opened the door.
A woman stood outside.
I didn’t know her.
She was holding a small envelope.
Her eyes immediately found me.
And the second she saw my face…
She started crying.
Dad stepped in front of me.
“Who are you?””
The woman looked at him.
Then at me.
“I’m sorry.””
Her voice trembled.
“I tried to stay away.””
My heart raced.
“What?””
She held the envelope tighter.
“I thought you deserved a normal life.””
Dad’s face turned pale.
“Leave.””
The woman shook her head.
“I can’t.””
“Leave now.””
She looked at me.
“Maya…”
Hearing my name from a stranger felt wrong.
“I need to tell you something.””
Dad’s voice became louder.
“Don’t.””
The woman looked at him.
“You can’t hide this forever.””
I looked between them.
“Who are you?””
The woman’s eyes filled with tears.
Then she whispered:
“I’m the person who should have told you the truth sixteen years ago.””
Dad reached for the door.
But before he could close it, she pushed the envelope forward.
The name written on the front made everyone stop.
Maya Johnson.
And beneath it:
“Your birth records.””
Dad’s face went completely pale.
Because he knew what was inside.
May you like
And for the first time in my life…
I wondered if Marcus Johnson was actually my father.
