Chapter 5: The Secret Conversation
I didn’t sleep that night.
Every sound in the house felt different.
The pipes.
The floorboards.
The quiet movement of someone walking down the hallway.
I kept thinking about Vanessa’s words.
Someone who has been watching Maya for a long time.
The sentence replayed in my head until morning.
By sunrise, I had already made a decision.
I was going to find the truth.
Not because I wanted revenge.
Because I was tired of adults deciding what I deserved to know.
I found Dad in his office.
The door was open.
He was sitting behind his desk with the scholarship letters spread out in front of him.
He looked older.
Not physically.
Just tired.
“Dad.””
He looked up.
“Maya.””
I walked inside.
“Who is she protecting?””
He looked away.
“I don’t know.””
“You do.””
“No.””
“You’re lying.””
He looked surprised.
I had never spoken to him like that before.
“I know you,” I said.
“You always look away when you’re hiding something.””
Dad leaned back.
For a moment, he wasn’t my father.
He was a man trapped between two impossible choices.
“I need time.””
“I don’t have time.””
His eyes moved to the scholarship letter.
“You should be celebrating.””
“I can’t celebrate while someone is trying to take it away.””
He rubbed his face.
“I promise I will figure this out.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You promised you would protect me.””
That hurt him.
I saw it.
Because he remembered.
Years ago, when my mother died, he made that promise.
And now he was realizing protection without honesty wasn’t enough.
A sound came from the hallway.
We both looked up.
Vanessa was standing there.
She had heard everything.
“Maya.””
I turned.
“What?””
She looked at Dad.
Then back at me.
“I need to show you something.””
Dad stood immediately.
“No.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“If she doesn’t know now, she’ll find out later.””
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa walked into the office.
She placed a small folder on the desk.
“I found this three months ago.””
Dad stared at it.
“What is it?””
She opened it.
Inside were printed emails.
Documents.
Messages.
My name appeared over and over.
My heart started racing.
“Why do you have that?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Because someone sent it to me.””
“Who?””
She looked at Dad.
“I don’t know.””
Dad picked up one of the pages.
His face changed.
“What is this?””
Vanessa answered quietly.
“Someone was investigating Maya.””
The room seemed to tilt.
“Investigating me?””
I grabbed the paper.
The message was short.
But terrifying.
“Confirm whether Maya Johnson is eligible before the final review.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Who sent this?””
She shook her head.
“I only received instructions.””
“Instructions to do what?””
Her silence answered before her words did.
Dad’s voice became sharp.
“Vanessa.””
She looked down.
“They told me to make sure Maya didn’t get too close to the university.””
I felt sick.
“Why?””
Nobody answered.
Then Dad noticed something else.
A small note attached to the folder.
His hand froze.
“What?””
He pulled it free.
The handwriting was familiar.
Too familiar.
“What does it say?”” I asked.
Dad stared at the note.
Then slowly read it aloud.
“If Maya learns the truth, she will never forgive you.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Dad looked at her.
“You knew?””
“No.””
“You knew there was a secret.””
“I knew there was something.””
“What secret?””
Vanessa looked at me.
And tears finally appeared in her eyes.
“The secret isn’t about your scholarship.””
I stared at her.
“Then what is it about?””
She looked at the folder.
May you like
Then whispered:
“It’s about who you really are.””
