Chapter 11: Clara's First Daughter

Nobody moved.

The young woman stood beneath the loading dock lights, her fingers wrapped tightly around the strap of her bag.

She looked frightened.

But she didn't look surprised.

Vanessa took one step backward.

“Elizabeth, you shouldn't be here.””

The girl laughed bitterly.

“That's what you've been telling me my entire life.””

I stared at her.

“Are you Clara's daughter?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at Daniel.

He seemed as shocked as I was.

“You knew about her?”” I asked.

“No,” he whispered.

Elizabeth looked between us.

“Daniel?””

He nodded slowly.

She approached him.

“I've heard about you.””

Daniel's expression softened.

“Where have you been?””

“Trying to find the truth.””

She turned toward me.

“Your wife wasn't the only person Vanessa kept away from this family.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Stop talking.””

Elizabeth ignored her.

“Evelyn told me that my mother abandoned me. She said Clara was young, irresponsible, and didn't want children.””

I felt my throat tighten.

“That's not true.””

Elizabeth nodded.

“I know that now.””

She opened her bag and removed a small photograph.

It showed Clara holding a little girl.

The girl had a butterfly clip in her hair.

On the back, Clara had written:

My Elizabeth. My first little star.

I took the photograph.

“Where did you get this?””

“My adoptive grandmother gave it to me before she died. She told me my birth mother had tried to contact me several times.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Why did you keep her away?””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Because Elizabeth had a stable life. Clara was not in a position to raise her.””

Elizabeth's eyes filled with tears.

“You told me my mother was dead.””

Vanessa looked away.

“You were a child.””

“I was sixteen when I found the letter.””

The loading dock fell silent.

Elizabeth continued.

“I found a letter from Clara hidden in the lining of an old suitcase. She had written to my adoptive parents asking to see me.””

I looked at the photograph.

“When was it written?””

“Two months before she died.””

My hands tightened.

“Did you meet her?””

Elizabeth shook her head.

“No. Vanessa intercepted the letter. By the time I found it, Clara was already gone.””

Vanessa's voice became sharp.

“You have no idea what Clara was like.””

Elizabeth turned toward her.

“I know she never stopped looking for me.””

She pulled another envelope from her bag.

Inside were several letters.

Each one had been addressed to Elizabeth.

The earliest was dated when she was four.

The latest was dated three weeks before Clara's death.

I opened the last one.

Elizabeth,

I don't know whether you'll ever read this. I have tried to reach you through every channel available to me, but someone keeps blocking my messages.

I want you to know that you were never unwanted.

I carried you in my heart every day.

I have a little girl now. Her name is Lily. I wish you could meet her.

And there is someone else I hope to find. His name is Daniel.

One day, I hope all three of my children can sit together and understand that they were loved.

I couldn't continue.

I looked at Lily.

She was watching Elizabeth with wide eyes.

“Are you my sister?””

Elizabeth knelt.

“I think I am.””

Lily studied her face.

“You look like Mommy.””

Elizabeth began crying.

“So do you.””

Lily stepped forward and hugged her.

For a few seconds, even the security guards seemed to forget why they were there.

Then Gregory cleared his throat.

“This is touching, but it changes nothing legally.””

Elizabeth stood.

“It changes everything.””

She removed a small USB drive from her pocket.

“I have the original adoption records, the letters, and a recording of Evelyn explaining how the children were separated.””

Gregory's expression changed.

“Where did you get that?””

“From Evelyn.””

Vanessa turned sharply.

“My mother would never give you that.””

“She did last night.””

Elizabeth looked directly at Vanessa.

“She finally told me why she helped you.””

Vanessa's face hardened.

“Don't.””

Elizabeth continued.

“She said you were terrified Clara would expose what happened to Daniel. You believed that if Clara reunited all three children, the family trust would become impossible to control.””

Gregory moved toward her.

“Give me the drive.””

Daniel stepped between them.

“Touch her and you'll regret it.””

Gregory looked toward the security men.

Neither moved.

Thomas had quietly called the hotel's actual security supervisor, and two additional guards had arrived.

Gregory adjusted his coat.

“You people are making a serious mistake.””

I turned toward him.

“No. We're correcting one.””

Then Elizabeth reached into her coat and removed a folded document.

“There's something else.””

I took it.

It was a copy of a private medical report.

Clara's name appeared at the top.

The report was dated three days before her death.

I read the first line.

Then the second.

My stomach turned.

“What's this?””

Elizabeth swallowed.

“My mother didn't die from the condition listed on her death certificate.””

I looked up.

“What?””

She pointed to the final paragraph.

It described an unexplained reaction to medication administered during an overnight hospital stay.

The report recommended an independent review.

There was a handwritten note beneath it.

*Original findings withheld pending administrative investigation.*

I looked at Vanessa.

She was shaking.

“Did you know about this?”” I asked.

She said nothing.

Elizabeth answered instead.

“My mother had asked the hospital to test the medication after she became suspicious. The results were never released.””

Daniel looked at the report.

“Who signed the withholding order?””

I turned the page.

A name appeared at the bottom.

Gregory Shaw.

I looked at the chairman.

His face had become expressionless.

Then he smiled.

“You still don't understand, Richard.””

I held up the report.

“Explain it.””

Gregory leaned closer.

“Your wife was going to expose something much bigger than a forged trust.””

“What?””

He looked toward Elizabeth.

Then toward Daniel.

And finally at Lily.

“Clara discovered that someone had been using the children's identities to move money through the Bennett family trust.””

My heart pounded.

“Who?””

Gregory smiled without warmth.

“Your father started it. I simply continued it.””

He turned toward Vanessa.

“Tell him what happened after Clara discovered the accounts.””

Vanessa looked at the ground.

Gregory continued.

“Tell him who was in the hospital room the night Clara died.””

Vanessa began crying.

May you like

And then she whispered:

“I wasn't supposed to be there.””
