Chapter 12: The Night Clara Died

The words hung in the air.

I stared at Vanessa.

“You were in Clara's hospital room?””

She covered her mouth.

“I didn't hurt her.””

I stepped closer.

“Answer me.””

“I went there because Gregory asked me to.””

Gregory laughed.

“Careful, Vanessa.””

She turned toward him.

“No. I'm done protecting you.””

For the first time, I saw something other than calculation in her eyes.

Fear.

Real fear.

She looked at me.

“Clara had discovered the trust accounts. She knew your father had been moving money through several companies for years.””

“Why?””

“Because he wanted to hide the true ownership of the hotels.””

I shook my head.

“My father built this company honestly.””

Vanessa gave a bitter smile.

“That's what you believed.””

She removed a folded sheet from her handbag.

It was a bank transfer record.

Several payments had been made from a company account to private entities in the Cayman Islands.

The authorization signatures belonged to my father.

I stared at the dates.

Some transfers had occurred after his death.

“Who authorized these?””

Gregory answered.

“I did.””

Vanessa continued.

“Clara found the accounts while reviewing the hotel's original construction expenses. She realized that money had been diverted from the company.””

I looked at her.

“And she threatened to expose you?””

“Yes.””

“Then what happened?””

Vanessa's voice trembled.

“Gregory told me to visit her. He wanted me to convince her to remain silent.””

“You were wearing a medical coat.””

She nodded.

“The hospital allowed approved visitors to enter through the private medical corridor. Gregory had arranged for me to obtain a temporary staff credential.””

I felt sick.

“What did you do?””

“I spoke to Clara.””

“And?””

“She refused to listen.””

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

“She told me she had already sent copies of the documents to someone outside the family. She said that if anything happened to her, everything would become public.””

I looked at Daniel.

He nodded slowly.

“She was talking about me.””

Vanessa continued.

“Gregory became furious. He said Clara had to be stopped before she could identify the accounts.””

I clenched my fists.

“Did you give her the medication?””

Vanessa shook her head violently.

“No.””

Gregory interrupted.

“She's lying.””

Vanessa turned toward him.

“You told me it was harmless.””

Gregory's face changed.

I stepped between them.

“What was harmless?””

Vanessa began sobbing.

“Gregory gave me a sealed medication packet. He told me Clara's doctors had requested it. He said I only needed to deliver it to the nurse.””

“Did you?””

She nodded.

I felt the world disappear around me.

“Why?””

“Because he promised that if I helped him, he would make sure my mother and I were financially protected.””

“And you believed him?””

“I was young.””

“You were old enough to know right from wrong!””

Lily began crying.

I immediately lowered my voice.

“I'm sorry, sweetheart.””

I knelt beside her.

“Can you go with Thomas for a moment?””

She looked frightened.

“Are you coming?””

“I'll be right behind you.””

Thomas led her toward the staff office.

Once she was out of earshot, I turned back to Vanessa.

“Did Clara take the medication?””

Vanessa nodded.

“The nurse administered it. I didn't know what was inside.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Who was the nurse?””

Vanessa looked at Gregory.

He remained silent.

Then she whispered a name.

“Dr. Samuel Price.””

I recognized it.

He had been Clara's attending physician.

“Where is he now?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Retired.””

Daniel opened his bag and pulled out another document.

“Not retired. He moved to Florida two years ago.””

He showed me an email.

It contained a recent message from Dr. Price to an unknown recipient.

I cannot continue carrying this. The medication was not part of the approved treatment plan. I was instructed to record it as a standard sedative.

I read the message twice.

“Who instructed him?””

Daniel pointed to the sender's contact information.

Gregory Shaw.

I turned toward the chairman.

He didn't deny it.

Instead, he reached into his coat and removed a small remote control.

“You're all making a terrible mistake.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“Put that down.””

Gregory pressed a button.

A large screen above the loading dock suddenly illuminated.

It displayed a live camera feed from Suite 1704.

I recognized the room immediately.

The blue glass wall.

The wooden reading nook.

The tiny stars.

But someone was inside.

A woman.

She was standing beside the reading nook, holding a small object in her hand.

I leaned closer.

It was Clara's old blue notebook.

My blood ran cold.

“Who is that?””

Gregory smiled.

“Someone who has been waiting for you to find the truth.””

The woman turned toward the camera.

For a moment, I couldn't breathe.

She had Clara's eyes.

Her dark hair.

Her familiar smile.

But it was impossible.

Clara was dead.

The woman lifted the notebook.

Then she spoke directly into the camera.

“Richard, if you're watching this, I need you to listen carefully.””

I felt my knees weaken.

“Clara?””

Vanessa began shaking her head.

“No. No, that can't be.””

The woman continued.

“I'm sorry I couldn't tell you the truth sooner. But there's something you need to understand about the night I died.””

I moved toward the screen.

“Clara, where are you?””

Her face filled the monitor.

Then she said:

“Gregory wasn't the only person who entered my hospital room that night.””

The screen went black.

I turned toward Gregory.

He had stopped smiling.

“What was that?”” I demanded.

He said nothing.

Daniel looked at the screen.

“Mr. Bennett, I think the recording is being transmitted from inside the suite.””

Thomas checked his phone.

“It's a live feed.””

I stared at him.

“Then get us upstairs.””

We ran toward the service elevator.

When we reached Suite 1704, the door was slightly open.

I pushed it inward.

The room was empty.

The notebook lay on the bed.

Beside it was a small digital recorder.

I picked it up.

A woman's voice played through the speaker.

“Richard, if you found this, then you know about Daniel and Elizabeth.””

I pressed the device closer to my ear.

“But you still don't know why I died.””

There was a pause.

Then Clara continued.

“The night I was admitted, someone came to my room after Vanessa left.””

I closed my eyes.

“Someone I trusted.””

The recording crackled.

“Someone who knew every password, every family secret, and every weakness.””

I looked at Daniel.

He was staring at the floor.

Then Clara spoke the name.

“Richard, it was your mother.””

My breath caught.

My mother had been dead for seventeen years.

Clara continued.

“She was alive when she entered that hospital room. And she knew exactly what was in the medication packet.””

The recorder clicked.

A second voice began playing.

An older woman's voice.

I recognized it immediately.

My mother's.

“Clara, you should have stayed away from my son.””

Then came Clara's frightened reply.

“Please. Don't involve Lily.””

And my mother's final words:

“Then tell me where you've hidden the original trust documents.””

I dropped the recorder.

May you like

Because the voice I had just heard belonged to a woman I had buried seventeen years earlier.

And suddenly, I realized the conspiracy had begun long before Vanessa ever entered my life.
