Chapter 7: Clara's Other Child

“Clara had a son?””

The words came out quieter than I intended.

Martin Harrison was still speaking through the phone, but I barely heard him.

I looked at the photograph on the bedside table. Clara was standing beside Vanessa outside a hospital room, smiling faintly at the camera.

I had known my wife for twelve years.

I had believed I knew everything about her.

Now a stranger was telling me that she had another child.

“Martin,” I said, forcing myself to concentrate, “how old is this Daniel?””

“According to the trust registration, thirty-one.””

I closed my eyes.

Clara and I had been married for eleven years when she died.

If Daniel was thirty-one, he had been born before I met her.

“Did Clara know he existed?””

“The documents suggest she did.””

“Then why didn't she tell me?””

Martin hesitated.

“Richard, I think you need to see the original birth registration. There's a note attached to it.””

“What note?””

“It says the child was placed under temporary guardianship shortly after birth.””

“Whose guardianship?””

“Evelyn Carter.””

Vanessa's mother.

I looked at Thomas.

He had heard enough to understand.

“Martin, send me everything.””

“I'll forward the records immediately. But there's another matter. The trust has a scheduled review tomorrow morning.””

“What happens then?””

“If the appointed trustee presents the required documents, she may gain control over the assets until the beneficiary reaches adulthood.””

“Vanessa?””

“Yes.””

I ended the call.

Lily was sitting on the floor, arranging her colored pencils into neat rows.

She looked up.

“Daddy, are you sad?””

I forced a smile.

“I'm just thinking, sweetheart.””

“About Mommy?””

I nodded.

She picked up the blue butterfly drawing.

“Maybe Mommy had a secret because she wanted to surprise us.””

I looked at her.

Children had a remarkable ability to offer hope without understanding how badly adults could destroy it.

“Maybe,” I whispered.

Thomas approached.

“Mr. Bennett, I think we should leave the suite.””

“Why?””

“Because if Vanessa knows about the trust review, she will try to get the original documents before we do.””

I nodded.

“Take us through the service corridor.””

We left Suite 1704 through the connecting maintenance passage.

As we walked, Thomas received a message.

He stopped abruptly.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He turned his phone toward me.

It was an internal security alert.

*EMPLOYEE ACCESS SUSPENDED: THOMAS REED.*

A second message appeared.

*DIRECTIVE ISSUED BY: VANESSA BENNETT, ACTING PROPERTY ADMINISTRATOR.*

Thomas stared at the screen.

“She can't do this.””

I looked at him.

“Apparently, she thinks she can.””

We continued toward the service elevator.

When we reached the lobby, Daniel, the guard from earlier, was waiting beside the staff entrance.

“Mr. Bennett,” he said, “I was told to give you this.””

He handed me a small brown envelope.

“Who gave it to you?””

“A woman came through the loading entrance about twenty minutes ago. She said you would understand.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was an old photograph.

Clara was holding a newborn baby.

On the back were three words.

*Daniel. One week old.*

There was another note.

Don't believe the birth certificate. Find the original hospital bracelet.

I looked at Thomas.

“Where would we find it?””

Thomas hesitated.

“Mrs. Bennett's personal effects were stored in the hotel's basement archive.””

“Take me there.””

The basement archive was a long, dim room lined with metal cabinets.

Thomas unlocked a storage unit marked with Clara's initials.

Inside were boxes containing old blueprints, photographs, and personal belongings from the hotel's construction period.

I searched through them.

There were sketches of the reading nook, handwritten notes about the lighting, and several letters addressed to me.

Then I found a small velvet box.

Inside was a hospital bracelet.

The name printed on it was almost faded.

*BABY CARTER — MALE — 02:14 A.M.*

The date was thirty-one years earlier.

But underneath the printed information, someone had written another name in blue ink.

*Daniel Bennett.*

I stared at it.

“Why would he have my surname?””

Thomas examined the bracelet.

“Perhaps Clara intended to give him your name.””

I shook my head.

“That doesn't make sense. I didn't even know her then.””

A sound came from behind us.

Someone had opened the archive door.

I turned.

An older woman stood in the doorway, wearing a beige coat and holding a black handbag.

I recognized her from the hospital photograph.

Evelyn Carter.

Vanessa's mother.

She looked directly at the bracelet.

Then she looked at me.

“Richard Bennett,” she said.

“I wondered how long it would take you to find that.””

I stepped in front of Lily.

“Who is Daniel?””

Evelyn's face tightened.

“You shouldn't be asking questions about that boy.””

“He's Clara's son.””

She laughed softly.

“Clara made a lot of mistakes.””

“Did you take her child?””

Evelyn's eyes flickered.

Then she said something that made Thomas gasp.

“I didn't take him. I gave him to the people who were supposed to raise him.””

“Who?””

She looked at the hospital bracelet.

“His father.””

I stared at her.

“Who was his father?””

Evelyn slowly lifted her eyes.

And then she said:

“Your father, Richard.””

For a moment, I couldn't breathe.

May you like

My father had been dead for nine years.

And according to Evelyn Carter, he had fathered a child with my wife before I had ever met her.
