Chapter 9: The Dead Man at the Door
I looked at Thomas.
He was already reaching for his phone.
“Call security,” I said.
Evelyn shook her head.
“Don't.””
I turned toward her.
“Why not?””
“Because if Vanessa has already filed a death certificate, the people working for her may be watching the building.””
I put the phone back to my ear.
“Daniel, where exactly are you?””
“Across the street. Near the old fountain.””
“Stay there. I'm coming.””
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“You need to listen to me first.””
I glanced at Lily.
“Not on the phone.””
“Then meet me somewhere private.””
I looked at Thomas.
He nodded toward the basement service exit.
“There's a maintenance entrance behind the loading dock.””
I agreed.
“Give me ten minutes.””
Daniel ended the call.
I turned to Evelyn.
“Why did you tell me he was my father's son if you knew Vanessa was trying to erase him?””
“Because I thought it was too late.””
“Too late for what?””
“To protect him.””
Evelyn looked at Lily.
“Your daughter is the only reason I finally decided to speak.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
She took a breath.
“Vanessa has become someone I no longer recognize.””
Thomas opened the service door.
“Mr. Bennett, we should move.””
I took Lily's hand.
We walked through the narrow corridor toward the loading dock.
Outside, a cold wind swept through the parking area.
The city was beginning to turn dark.
A black sedan sat near the service entrance.
A man stood beside it.
He was tall, perhaps in his early thirties, with dark hair and a faint scar across his left cheek.
When he saw me, he didn't smile.
He simply stared.
I stopped several feet away.
“Daniel?””
He nodded.
“Richard.””
His voice was deeper than I expected.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then his eyes moved toward Lily.
“That's Clara's daughter?””
“Yes.””
He crouched slightly.
“Hello, Lily.””
She looked at him carefully.
“Do you know my mommy?””
Daniel's expression softened.
“Better than you might think.””
I felt something tighten in my chest.
“Tell me what you know.””
Daniel stood.
“Not here.””
He opened the sedan's rear door and removed a brown leather bag.
Inside were several folders and a small digital recorder.
“I have copies of the original hospital records, the forged trust documents, and the recordings Clara made before she died.””
I stared at him.
“You had all of this?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't you contact me?””
Daniel looked away.
“Because I was told you knew everything.””
“By whom?””
“Vanessa.””
I shook my head.
“She told you I knew?””
“She said you had agreed to keep me out of the family. She said Clara had made a choice, and you were honoring it.””
I felt anger rising.
“She lied.””
“I know that now.””
Daniel opened one of the folders.
Inside was a hospital photograph.
Clara sat in a chair beside a newborn baby.
Her eyes were red, but she was smiling.
On the back was a handwritten note.
My son. My Daniel. I will find you again.
I stared at the photograph.
“Did she ever tell you about me?””
Daniel nodded.
“She told me you were a good man. She said she wanted you to meet me someday.””
“Then why didn't she?””
“Because she was afraid.””
“Of Vanessa?””
“Of your father.””
I looked up.
Daniel continued.
“Your father had arranged my adoption. He told Clara that if she tried to contact me, he would make sure she lost everything.””
I shook my head.
“My father died before Clara.””
“Yes. But his lawyers remained. So did his money.””
Daniel pulled another document from the bag.
It was a handwritten statement signed by my father.
I recognized his signature immediately.
I acknowledge Daniel Carter as my biological son. I have established a private fund for his benefit. My other son, Richard, must never be informed of this arrangement unless Daniel chooses to reveal himself.
I stared at the paper.
My father had known.
He had left instructions.
And someone had spent years making sure those instructions were buried.
“Why did Clara come back for you?”” I asked.
Daniel looked at the ground.
“Because she found out that my adoptive family had died. She wanted to bring me into her life.””
“Did she succeed?””
He shook his head.
“She contacted me. We met twice. Then she became ill.””
I looked at the hospital photograph again.
“Did you visit her?””
“Yes.””
“Were you there when she died?””
Daniel's expression darkened.
“No. I was supposed to visit her that evening.””
“What happened?””
“My car was involved in an accident. Someone had cut the brake line.””
I stared at him.
“Were you injured?””
“Badly. I spent three days in hospital.””
“And Clara?””
“She died the morning after the accident.””
My stomach twisted.
“Do you believe someone tried to kill you?””
Daniel looked directly at me.
“I don't believe it anymore. I know it.””
He opened the digital recorder.
“Clara left me a message two days before she died.””
He pressed play.
A faint crackle filled the air.
Then Clara's voice emerged.
“Daniel, sweetheart, if you're hearing this, something has happened to me.””
I stopped breathing.
Her voice was softer than I remembered.
She continued.
“I'm sorry I couldn't give you the family you deserved. I tried. I really did.””
There was a pause.
Then she said:
“Vanessa knows about your father's trust. She has discovered that you are the rightful beneficiary. If she cannot control you, she will try to make sure you never exist.””
Daniel stopped the recording.
I looked at him.
“Why didn't you give this to the police?””
“I did.””
“And?””
“The detective assigned to the case was removed two days later.””
I stared at him.
“Who removed him?””
Daniel handed me a business card.
*Gregory Shaw — Bennett Hospitality Group, Board Chairman.*
I recognized the name.
Gregory had been my father's closest business associate. He had helped me secure my first hotel loan and had served on my board for twenty years.
I had trusted him.
“Why would Gregory help Vanessa?””
Daniel looked toward the hotel.
“Because your father left him something, too.””
“What?””
“Control of the inheritance fund if both his sons were declared legally ineligible.””
My blood ran cold.
A car door slammed somewhere behind us.
Thomas turned.
“Mr. Bennett.””
A black SUV had pulled into the loading area.
Two men stepped out.
One was wearing a security uniform.
The other held a folder.
Daniel immediately grabbed his bag.
“That's them.””
I pulled Lily behind me.
The man with the folder approached.
“Mr. Bennett, we have a court order.””
I stared at him.
“What court order?””
He held up the document.
“Emergency custody protection. Your daughter is to be placed under the temporary supervision of Mrs. Vanessa Bennett pending an investigation into your fitness as her guardian.””
I felt my entire body go cold.
“That is absurd.””
The man pointed toward Lily.
“Please step aside, sir.””
Lily grabbed my hand.
“Daddy, I don't want to go with Vanessa.””
I crouched beside her.
“You're not going anywhere without me.””
The man opened the folder.
“Mr. Bennett, if you refuse to comply, you may be arrested.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“That's a forged order.””
The man turned.
“And who are you?””
Daniel stared at him.
“The person whose death certificate you just filed.””
The man's expression changed.
Then Daniel pulled a document from his bag and held it up.
“My birth record. My identity verification. And the original trust agreement.””
The two men exchanged a look.
One of them reached for his radio.
Daniel spoke louder.
“Tell Gregory Shaw I know what happened to Clara.””
The man froze.
I looked at Daniel.
“What happened?””
Daniel turned toward me.
His eyes were filled with anger.
“Your father didn't just leave behind a secret inheritance.””
He pointed toward the Grand Meridian.
“He left behind evidence that Gregory and Vanessa used the hotel to move money for years. Clara discovered it, and she was killed before she could expose them.””
Before I could respond, my phone rang.
It was Martin Harrison.
I answered.
“Martin?””
His voice was shaking.
“Richard, you need to get Lily somewhere safe.””
“Why?””
“Because the court order Vanessa presented is real.””
I looked at the document in the stranger's hand.
Martin continued.
“And there's something much worse. The judge who signed it has just issued an order requiring you to surrender temporary custody immediately.””
I stared at Lily.
Then Martin said:
“Richard, Vanessa has also filed an emergency petition claiming that Clara was never legally married to you.””
I looked at Daniel.
He had gone pale.
“What's the consequence?”” I asked.
Martin lowered his voice.
“If the court accepts that petition, Lily's inheritance could be transferred to Vanessa permanently.””
I ended the call.
The two men were still standing in front of us.
Then a voice came from behind the SUV.
“Richard.””
I turned.
Gregory Shaw stepped into the light.
He adjusted his expensive coat and looked at Daniel.
Then he smiled.
“It's been a long time, Daniel.””
Daniel's hands clenched.
Gregory glanced at Lily.
“And I see you've brought the last piece of the puzzle.””
He held up a small document.
“Unfortunately, Richard, there's something your late wife never told you.””
May you like
He looked directly into my eyes.
“Lily isn't the only child Clara had.””
