The Secret Behind Suite 1704 / Chapter 6 / 15

Chapter 6: The Money in My Daughter's Name

“Twenty-eight million dollars?””

I repeated the number because my mind refused to accept it.

The lawyer, Martin Harrison, remained silent for a moment.

“Richard, the attempted withdrawal was made through a custodial trust account. The beneficiary is listed as Lily Bennett.””

I looked at my daughter.

She was drawing little stars around the butterfly.

“Who authorized the account?””

“The documents list Clara as the original grantor and Vanessa as the appointed guardian.””

I gripped the phone.

“Clara never appointed Vanessa as Lily's guardian.””

“Then we need to establish who created these documents.””

“Freeze the account.””

“I'm already contacting the bank's fraud department. But there's a complication.””

“What complication?””

“The trust agreement includes a clause stating that if you challenge its validity, control of the funds temporarily transfers to the appointed trustee pending legal review.””

I looked at Thomas.

He understood immediately.

“Vanessa,” he whispered.

I turned away from Lily.

“Martin, do not allow a single dollar to leave that account.””

“I'll do everything I can.””

“And send me every document associated with it.””

“I will.””

I ended the call.

Thomas was standing beside the reading nook, looking at the memory card.

“Mr. Bennett, there's something I haven't told you.””

I stared at him.

“I'm getting tired of hearing that sentence.””

He lowered his eyes.

“Five years ago, Vanessa came to my office with a lawyer. They wanted me to sign a statement confirming that Mrs. Bennett had requested the suite be sealed permanently.””

“Did you sign it?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because they showed me a document with Mrs. Bennett's signature.””

“Did you recognize it?””

“At the time, I thought it was genuine.””

“And now?””

Thomas looked at the memory card.

“Now I don't think it was.””

I took a slow breath.

“Why didn't you come to me?””

Thomas's eyes became wet.

“Because Vanessa threatened to destroy my career. She said I would be blamed for the unauthorized hospital access and the missing security footage.””

I stared at him.

“Were you involved?””

“No, sir. I swear.””

I studied his face.

He looked frightened, but not surprised.

That bothered me.

“Thomas, I need the truth. All of it.””

He nodded.

“Daniel was the one who discovered the forged documents. He noticed that someone had accessed Mrs. Bennett's room using a visitor badge issued under a different name.””

“Whose name?””

“Evelyn Carter.””

I frowned.

“Who is Evelyn Carter?””

Thomas looked toward the door.

“Vanessa's mother.””

The room seemed to become colder.

“Her mother was at the hospital?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Thomas hesitated.

“Daniel believed she had been involved in changing Mrs. Bennett's medical records.””

I sat down.

Clara's final weeks had been difficult.

Her doctors had told me that her condition was worsening. They had explained the treatment options, the risks, and the likely outcome.

I had trusted them.

I had held Clara's hand while she cried because she wouldn't see Lily grow up.

And now I was being told that someone might have interfered with her medical care.

“Did Daniel have proof?””

Thomas nodded.

“He said he had recorded a conversation between Vanessa and her mother.””

“Where is it?””

“On the original server.””

“The one that flooded?””

“Yes.””

I looked at the memory card.

“Could this contain the same recording?””

“Possibly.””

I took out my phone.

“Get someone from the technology department to recover the files.””

Thomas hesitated.

“Mr. Bennett, I wouldn't involve the current technology team.””

“Why not?””

“Because the person who supervised the server room when it flooded still works here.””

I stared at him.

“Who?””

Thomas swallowed.

“Vanessa's brother, Michael Carter.””

Before I could respond, the suite's television switched on.

A black screen appeared.

Then a video feed opened.

Vanessa stood in the hotel's private conference room.

She was speaking to someone outside the camera's view.

I recognized the voice immediately.

“Richard found the letter,” she said.

A man's voice answered.

“Then we have a problem.””

Vanessa walked toward the window.

“He also found the memory card.””

The man cursed.

“Did he open it?””

“I don't know.””

“Then we need to get it before he does.””

Vanessa turned toward the camera.

“There's another issue. He knows about the trust.””

The man laughed.

“Let him. The trust is legally protected.””

“What if the documents are challenged?””

“They won't be.””

“And what about Lily?””

The man stopped laughing.

“She's the key. Without her, the entire arrangement falls apart.””

Vanessa looked down.

“She's only seven.””

“Don't start feeling guilty now.””

The screen went black.

I stood motionless.

Thomas looked horrified.

“Mr. Bennett, I didn't know that recording existed.””

I turned toward him.

“Where did it come from?””

“The suite's internal security system. It shouldn't have access to the conference room.””

I looked at the screen.

A small timestamp appeared in the corner.

The recording had been made that morning.

I checked the time.

It was less than an hour old.

Someone had been watching Vanessa.

And someone had deliberately sent the footage to this suite.

Lily climbed down from the sofa.

“Daddy?””

I turned.

“What's wrong, sweetheart?””

She held up her drawing.

“Look. I made Mommy a birthday card.””

I smiled faintly.

“It's beautiful.””

She pointed to the bottom corner.

“I wrote something for her.””

In uneven blue letters, she had written:

*I MISS YOU, MOMMY.*

My throat tightened.

I pulled her into my arms.

“Your mommy would love that.””

Then she whispered something.

“Daddy, can I tell you a secret?””

I kissed the top of her head.

“Of course.””

She looked toward the closed door.

“Vanessa came into my room last night.””

My entire body stiffened.

“What?””

“She said she wanted to give me a birthday surprise.””

“What did she give you?””

Lily reached into the small pocket of her dress.

She pulled out a folded piece of paper.

“I didn't understand it, so I kept it.””

I opened it.

It was a photocopy of a document.

At the top were the words:

*BENNETT FAMILY TRUST — BENEFICIARY CONSENT.*

Below it was Lily's name.

And beside her name was a signature.

A child's signature.

But Lily had never signed it.

I looked at the date.

Yesterday.

Then I read the final paragraph.

It stated that the beneficiary had voluntarily agreed to transfer all future inheritance rights to the appointed trustee.

I felt sick.

“Lily, did Vanessa ask you to write your name on anything?””

Lily shook her head.

“No. She told me it was a birthday game.””

I crouched in front of her.

“What kind of game?””

“She said I had to practice writing my full name because grown-ups needed it for a special present.””

I looked at the paper again.

At the bottom was a witness signature.

Michael Carter.

Vanessa's brother.

Thomas stepped closer.

“Mr. Bennett, we need to get Lily away from here.””

I nodded.

But before I could answer, my phone rang.

It was Martin Harrison.

I answered immediately.

“Martin?””

His voice was urgent.

“Richard, listen carefully. I just received the original trust registration from the bank.””

“And?””

“There's a second beneficiary.””

“Who?””

He paused.

Then he said:

“Your daughter isn't the only person Clara named in the trust.””

I looked at the document in my hand.

“Who else?””

Martin took a breath.

“Richard, the second beneficiary is Daniel Carter.””

I stared at Thomas.

“Carter?””

“Yes. And according to the registration, Daniel isn't Vanessa's brother.””

The room went silent.

Martin continued.

“He's listed as Clara's biological son.””

I looked at the photograph of Clara standing in Suite 1704.

Then I looked at Lily.

And suddenly, I understood why Vanessa had been so desperate to keep us out of that room.

May you like

Clara had left behind another child.

And someone had spent five years making sure I never found out.
