Chapter 13: The Mother I Buried

I listened to the recording three times.

Each time, the same words came through the speaker.

“Clara, you should have stayed away from my son.””

My mother's voice.

A voice I had not heard in seventeen years.

I remembered her funeral. The white lilies. The closed casket. My father's trembling hands as he stood beside me.

I had been twenty-eight years old.

Now, standing inside the hotel room my late wife had designed, I was being told that the woman I had buried had visited Clara's hospital room years after her supposed death.

It made no sense.

“Thomas,” I said, “find out where this recording originated.””

He took the device.

“I'm on it.””

Daniel was examining the digital recorder.

“There's another file.””

He pressed a button.

A series of clicks sounded, followed by a man's voice.

My father's voice.

“Margaret, you have to stop this. Clara is asking questions.””

My mother's response was immediate.

“Then make her stop asking.””

My father's voice became quieter.

“She has the original records.””

“Then find them.””

“And if she refuses?””

There was a long silence.

Then my mother said something I would never forget.

“Richard must never know that his father had two families. He has already lost enough.””

The recording ended.

I felt dizzy.

My father had lived a double life.

My mother had apparently known about it.

And Clara had somehow discovered the truth.

But the question remained.

How had my mother survived seventeen years after her funeral?

Daniel approached me.

“Richard, I think we need to consider the possibility that the woman in that recording wasn't your mother.””

I turned toward him.

“I know her voice.””

“I understand. But voices can be imitated, recordings can be manipulated, and documents can be forged.””

Thomas looked up from his phone.

“Mr. Bennett, I found something.””

He turned the screen toward me.

It was an archived photograph from a private hospital.

The date was six years earlier.

The woman in the photograph looked exactly like my mother.

The caption beneath it read:

*Margaret Bennett — Patient, Private Neurological Wing.*

I grabbed the phone.

“She's alive.””

Thomas nodded.

“Apparently, she has been receiving treatment under a different identity.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Where is she?””

“There's an address attached to the medical record,” Thomas replied.

“A private rehabilitation residence outside Boston.””

I looked toward the window.

“Get the car.””

Before we could leave, the suite's telephone rang.

I picked it up.

“Hello?””

A woman's voice answered.

“Richard?””

I froze.

“Who is this?””

There was a shaky breath.

“It's your mother.””

I gripped the receiver.

“Where are you?””

“Please don't come looking for me.””

“Seventeen years, Mom. Seventeen years I've believed you were dead.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

She began crying.

“Because your father told me it was the only way to protect you.””

I looked at Daniel.

He had moved closer.

“Protect me from what?””

“From the truth about your father.””

I closed my eyes.

“Was he involved in Clara's death?””

My mother didn't answer.

“Mom, answer me.””

“I didn't want her to die.””

The words came out almost inaudibly.

I felt my chest tighten.

“But you knew what was happening.””

“I knew Gregory was threatening her. I knew Vanessa had become involved. I knew they wanted the trust documents.””

“Then why didn't you stop them?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of whom?””

“Your father.””

I stared at the floor.

My father had been dead for nine years.

Yet his decisions were still destroying our family.

My mother continued.

“Richard, I need you to understand. Your father had another son before Daniel. A son he never acknowledged. And there was a third child after you.””

I stopped breathing.

“Another child?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

She whispered a name.

“Michael.””

Vanessa's brother.

I looked at Daniel.

He heard it too.

My mother continued.

“Michael isn't Vanessa's biological brother. He is your father's son.””

The pieces began falling into place.

Gregory had controlled the trust.

Vanessa had manipulated the hospital records.

Michael had supervised the server room.

They were all connected through my father.

“Where are you?”” I demanded.

My mother hesitated.

Then she said:

“Come to the old Bennett house. The one your father sold before he died.””

“Why?””

“Because I kept the original family ledger there.””

“What ledger?””

“The document that explains everything.””

The line crackled.

Then she added:

“And Richard, don't bring Gregory.””

The call ended.

I stood motionless.

Daniel picked up the photograph of Clara.

“She's finally ready to tell us.””

Thomas approached.

“Mr. Bennett, there's something else.””

He showed me a security notification.

Someone had accessed the hotel's financial servers.

A large transfer was underway.

The destination account belonged to a company registered in the name of Michael Carter.

The amount was thirty million dollars.

I immediately called the bank.

“Freeze the transfer.””

The representative asked for my authorization.

I gave it.

After several seconds, she returned.

“I'm sorry, Mr. Bennett. The transfer has already been approved by the acting trustee.””

“Who?””

“Vanessa Bennett.””

I looked toward Daniel.

The trust had been designed to protect the children.

Instead, it was being used to steal their future.

I turned to Thomas.

“Get the board on an emergency call. And contact the police.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Richard, we can't wait. If Michael gets the money, he'll disappear.””

I looked at the photograph in my hand.

Then at the empty reading nook.

Clara had spent her final days trying to bring her children together.

I wasn't going to let the people who destroyed her family finish what they started.

“Let's go,” I said.

As we left the suite, Lily came running toward me from the staff office.

“Daddy!””

I knelt and caught her.

She held out a small blue envelope.

“Thomas gave me this. He said Mommy wanted me to have it.””

I opened it.

Inside was a tiny silver key and a note.

For Lily, when all my children are together.

Beneath the note was one final sentence.

The truth is not in the hotel. It is where our family began.

I looked at Daniel.

Then I understood.

The old Bennett house wasn't just where my mother was hiding.

May you like

It was where Clara had left the final piece of her story.

And someone else was already on the way there.
