Chapter 8: The Family Secret
I thought I had misunderstood her.
“My father?””
Evelyn nodded.
“Your father and Clara knew each other long before you did.””
I looked at the bracelet again.
The room seemed suddenly smaller.
“My father died nine years ago.””
“I know.””
“And you're telling me he had a child with Clara?””
“I'm telling you that Daniel was born from their relationship.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“Mrs. Carter, that's an extraordinary accusation.””
Evelyn gave him a cold look.
“Extraordinary? You helped keep the boy hidden.””
Thomas's face went pale.
“I never knew who he was.””
“Of course you didn't. Nobody was supposed to know.””
I stared at her.
“Why would Clara have a child with my father?””
Evelyn sighed.
“Your father was a generous man. He helped Clara when she was young. She was studying architecture, and he sponsored part of her education.””
“That doesn't explain anything.””
“She fell in love with him.””
The words landed like a physical blow.
I remembered my father introducing me to Clara at a charity event.
He had smiled when I told him I wanted to marry her.
He had even helped pay for our wedding.
Had he known?
Had he watched his son build a life with the woman he once loved?
I felt sick.
“Why didn't he tell me?””
Evelyn looked away.
“Because he was ashamed.””
“And Clara?””
“She wanted to keep the baby. Your father refused to acknowledge him publicly. He had a reputation, a family, and a business to protect.””
“My mother?””
Evelyn nodded.
“Your mother knew about the affair. She threatened to expose everything.””
I shook my head.
“My mother died believing my father was faithful.””
“Then she was fortunate.””
My hands curled into fists.
“Don't speak about my mother.””
Evelyn looked at Lily.
“Children shouldn't have to inherit the mistakes of their parents.””
I stepped closer.
“Then why did you help hide Clara's son?””
“Because I was protecting my daughter.””
“Vanessa?””
Evelyn nodded.
“Vanessa was very young when Daniel was born. She grew up believing that everything she had was secure. When Clara came back into our lives, she threatened that security.””
I frowned.
“Clara came back?””
“Years later. After she married you.””
That stopped me.
“What?””
Evelyn opened her handbag and removed a folded letter.
“She came to see me shortly before she died.””
I took the letter.
The paper was old, but the handwriting was unmistakable.
Evelyn,
I know what happened to Daniel. I know Richard's father arranged for him to be placed with another family, and I know you helped keep him away from me.
I am not asking you to return the years I lost. I am asking you to stop lying.
Daniel deserves to know who he is.
Richard deserves to know the truth.
And Vanessa must stop using my past to control the future of my daughter.
I looked up.
“What did Vanessa do?””
Evelyn's expression changed.
“She found out that Clara was searching for Daniel.””
“And?””
“She threatened to expose the affair to the press. She said Clara had no right to claim anything from the Bennett family.””
I looked at Thomas.
He was staring at the letter.
“Mrs. Carter,” he said, “why was Vanessa at the hospital wearing a medical coat?””
Evelyn's mouth tightened.
“Because she wanted to see whether Clara had signed the papers.””
“What papers?””
“The guardianship documents.””
I felt my stomach turn.
“Did Clara sign them?””
“No.””
“Then who forged them?””
Evelyn looked at me.
“Vanessa.””
Silence.
Lily tugged at my jacket.
“Daddy, can we go home now?””
I knelt.
“Yes, sweetheart. Soon.””
She looked at Evelyn.
“Do you know my mommy?””
The older woman stared at her for a long moment.
“Yes.””
“Did she like butterflies?””
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
“She loved them.””
Lily smiled.
“Me too.””
For a moment, the tension in the room softened.
Then Evelyn looked at me.
“You need to understand something, Richard. Vanessa didn't marry you because she loved you.””
I stood slowly.
“Why did she marry me?””
“Because she believed your father had left something for Daniel.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
Evelyn shook her head.
“Your father established a private inheritance fund before he died. It was intended for his children.””
I frowned.
“I was his only child.””
“That's what he told everyone.””
She took another document from her handbag.
It was an old bank statement.
A trust had been established thirty-one years earlier.
The first beneficiary was Daniel Bennett.
The second was Richard Bennett.
I stared at the numbers.
The account had grown for decades.
Its current value was more than thirty million dollars.
I looked at Evelyn.
“Why would Vanessa need Lily's inheritance if this money belonged to Daniel?””
“Because Daniel disappeared.””
“And?””
Evelyn lowered her voice.
“Vanessa believes that if Daniel is legally declared dead, the money can be transferred to the next eligible beneficiary.””
“Lily?””
“Yes.””
“But why would she need to fake Clara's divorce and steal my ownership rights?””
Evelyn hesitated.
Then she gave me the answer.
“Because the trust requires proof that Daniel's family has no surviving legal claim.””
I looked at the old bank statement.
A red stamp appeared near the bottom.
*BENEFICIARY STATUS: UNRESOLVED.*
I suddenly understood.
Vanessa wasn't trying to steal one hotel.
She was trying to erase an entire branch of the Bennett family.
My phone rang.
An unknown number.
I answered.
A man's voice came through.
“Mr. Bennett?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Daniel Carter.””
I looked at Evelyn.
She closed her eyes.
The man continued.
“I've been trying to reach you for five years.””
“Where are you?””
There was a long pause.
Then he said:
“I'm outside the Grand Meridian. But before I come in, you need to know something.””
“What?””
“Vanessa has just filed a death certificate in my name.””
I felt the blood drain from my face.
May you like
And then Daniel added:
“She didn't do it alone. Someone from your company's board helped her.””
