Chapter 12: Twelve Million Reasons

Marcus placed the insurance document on the table.

Nobody spoke.

The policy had been established years earlier, when Elena was still healthy.

It was intended to provide Maya with financial security if both parents died before she reached adulthood.

But the beneficiary designation had been altered.

Marcus read the document again.

Maya remained the primary beneficiary.

Daniel had been named as the contingent beneficiary, with authority to manage the funds if Marcus died or became legally incapable of caring for her.

The change had been approved by Richard.

"What does this mean?"" Marcus asked.

Patricia examined the signature.

"It means Daniel positioned himself to control the money under certain circumstances.""

"Which circumstances?""

"Your death, incapacity, or the loss of your parental rights.""

Marcus looked toward Evelyn.

"That's why Vanessa filed the custody petition.""

Evelyn nodded.

"She may be trying to establish circumstances that would allow Daniel to gain control over the trust and insurance arrangements.""

Marcus clenched his jaw.

"She wants my daughter.""

Patricia shook her head.

"She wants what she can obtain through Maya.""

Marcus looked at the twelve-million-dollar figure.

For the first time, the amount made him feel nothing but disgust.

They took the documents to the authorities that afternoon.

A financial investigator reviewed the records, the recordings, and the suspicious insurance amendments.

He was particularly interested in the medication conversation.

"Do you have the original prescriptions?"" he asked.

Marcus shook his head.

"Not yet.""

Patricia handed over the hospital correspondence.

"The hospital should have archived copies.""

The investigator nodded.

"We'll request them.""

He then examined the seven letters.

"These suggest an organized financial scheme. We need to establish who authorized each transaction and whether any medical records were altered.""

Marcus leaned forward.

"Can you arrest Daniel?""

"Not on these documents alone. But we can investigate the financial fraud and the suspected interference with medical treatment.""

Marcus looked at the recorder.

"What about Vanessa?""

"We'll interview her.""

"And my father?""

The investigator looked at him.

"Mr. Hayes, if your father knowingly participated in the falsification of documents, he may also be implicated.""

Marcus nodded.

He wasn't going to protect anyone anymore.

Not even his father.

At 5:40 p.m., Patricia received an unexpected phone call.

It was the hospital's former pharmacy supervisor.

She had found something in the archived medication records.

The original prescription Elena had received was for a standard pain-management treatment.

But twelve days before her death, the medication had been replaced.

The replacement carried a different dosage and a warning about potentially dangerous interactions with another medication Elena was taking.

The authorization had been recorded under the name of a physician who claimed never to have approved it.

Patricia immediately requested a copy.

When it arrived, she examined the electronic signature.

Then she looked at Marcus.

"There's a problem.""

"What?""

"The prescription was changed using a hospital account belonging to someone who had temporary administrative access.""

"Who?""

Patricia turned the screen toward him.

The name appeared clearly.

Rachel Hayes.

Marcus stared.

"No.""

Patricia checked the access log.

"Her account was used at 2:13 a.m.""

Rachel had been working at the hospital at that time.

But she had also been one of Elena's closest supporters.

Marcus immediately called her.

She answered after the second ring.

"Marcus?""

"Did you change Elena's medication?""

Silence.

"Rachel?""

"I didn't.""

"Your hospital account was used.""

"I know.""

Marcus froze.

"What do you mean, you know?""

Rachel's voice broke.

"Someone stole my access card.""

"When?""

"The night Elena died.""

Marcus stood.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I was afraid.""

"Of whom?""

Rachel began crying.

"Vanessa.""

Rachel arrived at the house forty minutes later.

She looked exhausted.

Marcus met her in the living room.

"Tell me everything.""

Rachel sat down.

"Vanessa knew my hospital schedule. She knew where I kept my access card. One night, she came to the staff room and asked me to help her print some documents.""

"What documents?""

"Something about Elena's insurance policy.""

Marcus stared.

"Why would she need your access?""

"She said the printer wasn't working in the administrative office. I gave her the card.""

Rachel covered her face.

"I didn't know she was going to use my account.""

Marcus walked toward the window.

"Did you see her access the medication records?""

"No.""

"Did you see her with Daniel?""

Rachel nodded.

"They met in the parking garage that night.""

"When?""

"About two hours before Elena's medication was changed.""

Marcus turned.

"Why didn't you report this?""

Rachel looked at him helplessly.

"Because Vanessa showed me a photograph.""

"What photograph?""

Rachel reached into her handbag.

It was a picture of Maya asleep in her hospital room.

Taken three years earlier.

On the back was a handwritten message.

*Children can disappear when adults stop paying attention.*

Marcus felt his blood turn cold.

Rachel continued.

"Vanessa told me Daniel had people who could make things happen. She said if I went to the police, Maya would be the one who suffered.""

Marcus sat down.

For the first time, he understood why his sister had been so frightened.

But that didn't make the silence easier to accept.

"You should have told me.""

"I know.""

"You should have trusted me.""

"I know.""

Rachel began sobbing.

Marcus looked away.

Then his phone rang.

The investigator.

"Mr. Hayes, we found something else in the hospital archive.""

Marcus stood.

"What?""

"The medication order was entered through Rachel's account, but the digital authorization came from another device.""

"Whose device?""

There was a pause.

Then the investigator answered.

"Your father's.""

Marcus closed his eyes.

"Can you prove it?""

"We're working on that. But there's something more.""

"What?""

"The hospital's security footage shows your father entering Elena's room at 2:31 a.m.""

Marcus gripped the phone.

"Was she alive?""

"Yes.""

"And what happened?""

"The footage shows him leaving seventeen minutes later.""

Marcus looked toward Rachel.

She was staring at him.

The investigator continued.

"Mr. Hayes, we also found footage from the corridor outside the pharmacy.""

Marcus waited.

"Your father wasn't alone.""

"Who was with him?""

The investigator took a breath.

"Vanessa.""

That night, Marcus couldn't look at the family photographs on the wall.

He removed them one by one.

Not because he wanted to erase Elena.

But because he could no longer stand the sight of people who had stood beside her while secretly betraying her.

Maya found him placing the photographs in a box.

"Daddy?""

He turned.

"Yes, sweetheart?""

"Are you putting Mommy away?""

Marcus immediately knelt.

"No. Never.""

"Then why are you taking her pictures down?""

He searched for the right words.

"Some people in these pictures weren't honest with us. I want to make sure the people around us are safe.""

Maya looked at the photograph of Elena holding her bicycle bell.

"Mommy is still safe in my heart.""

Marcus pulled her close.

"She always will be.""

After Maya went upstairs, he returned to the dining room.

A new email had arrived from Patricia.

Subject: *URGENT — ORIGINAL WILL AUTHENTICATION*

He opened it.

The forensic examiner had compared the signatures on the disputed will, the medical authorization, and the insurance amendment.

The results were shocking.

The signature on the will was forged.

The medical authorization was also forged.

But the insurance amendment was different.

It carried a genuine signature.

Marcus stared at the screen.

Then he noticed the date.

The amendment had been signed by Elena herself.

Three days before she died.

Beneath her signature was a handwritten statement:

I am making this change because I now know who Daniel really is.

Marcus read the sentence again.

Why would Elena voluntarily name Daniel as Maya's contingent beneficiary after discovering his fraud?

Then another email arrived.

This one was from an address he didn't recognize.

There was only one attachment.

A photograph.

Elena was sitting in her hospital bed, holding a newborn baby.

But it wasn't Maya.

It was another little girl.

And standing beside Elena was a man Marcus had never seen before.

The message contained just seven words.

*Your wife had another child before she died.*

Marcus stared at the photograph.

Then he noticed the date.

May you like

It had been taken six weeks before Elena's death.

And the little girl was wearing the same silver bracelet Maya had inherited from her mother.
