Chapter 7: The Secret of Maya's Birth
Marcus stared at the sealed envelope.
For three years, he had believed he understood everything about his family. He knew how Elena had fallen in love with him, how they had struggled through their first years of marriage, and how desperately they had wanted a child.
He remembered holding Maya for the first time.
He remembered Elena crying against his shoulder.
He remembered promising that nothing would ever come between them.
Now Patricia was telling him that his daughter's birth carried a secret.
"What does this have to do with Vanessa?"" Marcus asked.
Patricia folded her hands.
"Elena discovered something shortly before she became seriously ill. Something that changed the way she viewed several people around her.""
"Stop speaking in riddles.""
Rachel stood beside the dining table.
"Marcus, maybe you should read the letter first.""
He looked at her.
"Did you know about this?""
"No.""
"Then why are you acting like you do?""
Rachel lowered her eyes.
Patricia carefully broke the seal.
Inside were three documents and a handwritten letter.
The first document was Maya's original birth certificate.
The second was a medical report from the fertility clinic Elena and Marcus had visited before Maya was born.
The third was a legal declaration signed by Elena.
Marcus picked up the medical report.
He read it once.
Then again.
His fingers went numb.
"That's impossible.""
Patricia didn't interrupt.
Marcus looked at the document again.
According to the report, Elena had undergone an emergency medical procedure during pregnancy. The clinic had discovered a discrepancy in the genetic records submitted during the fertility treatment.
The report identified Daniel Whitmore as the biological donor.
Marcus looked up.
"What?""
Rachel covered her mouth.
Patricia spoke gently.
"Elena and you had used a fertility clinic. Daniel had been listed as an emergency donor contact after an earlier treatment arrangement. There was a serious documentation error.""
Marcus shook his head.
"No. Daniel was Elena's cousin.""
"Not biologically," Patricia explained.
"They were related through marriage.""
Marcus continued reading.
The report indicated that Elena had discovered the discrepancy shortly after Maya's birth.
But she had made a decision.
She had chosen not to pursue a public investigation because the clinic accepted responsibility for the error and agreed to protect the family's privacy.
Marcus looked at the legal declaration.
Elena had written:
Marcus is Maya's father in every way that matters. He has loved her since before she was born. I will not allow a medical error or another person's selfishness to destroy the family we built.
Marcus dropped the paper.
"Why didn't she tell me?""
Patricia answered carefully.
"She intended to. But she was afraid the information would be used against Maya.""
"By Daniel?""
Patricia nodded.
"Daniel learned about the clinic's mistake. He began using it to pressure Elena.""
Marcus walked away from the table.
He couldn't breathe properly.
For years, he had watched Maya grow, teaching her to ride a bicycle, helping her with homework, and holding her when nightmares woke her.
None of those memories changed.
Nothing could.
But the thought that Daniel knew a secret about his daughter and had used it to manipulate his wife made Marcus feel physically sick.
Rachel approached him.
"Marcus, look at me.""
He didn't turn.
"She is still your daughter.""
"I know that.""
"Then don't let those papers make you forget it.""
Marcus finally faced her.
"Do you think I could ever stop loving that little girl?""
Rachel shook her head.
"No. But Daniel wants you to doubt everything. That's how he controls people.""
Patricia placed the final document on the table.
"There is something more important here.""
It was a legal declaration establishing Marcus as Maya's legal father, signed before her birth and confirmed after it.
Elena had also included a clause preventing Daniel from making any claim against Maya or her inheritance.
"Daniel tried to challenge this?"" Marcus asked.
"Yes. He filed a confidential petition shortly after Elena died. It was dismissed because the court recognized your parental rights and the clinic's liability.""
Marcus looked up.
"Why wasn't I told?""
"Because Vanessa withdrew the notification using a power of attorney that Elena had signed during her illness.""
Marcus stared at the attorney.
"Vanessa had that authority?""
Patricia nodded reluctantly.
"Temporarily. Elena believed Vanessa was helping coordinate household and medical matters. She didn't realize how much access she had given her.""
Marcus returned to his chair.
Suddenly, the pieces began fitting together.
Vanessa's interest in the trust.
Daniel's visits.
The missing documents.
The threats.
The attempt to destroy the bicycle.
Everything had been connected.
And Maya had been caught in the middle.
That evening, Marcus sat on the edge of Maya's bed.
She was wearing pink pajamas and brushing the hair of a stuffed rabbit.
"Daddy?""
"Yes?""
"Are you going to send me away?""
Marcus felt his throat tighten.
"Who told you that?""
"Vanessa.""
He took her hand.
"Sweetheart, nothing in the world could make me send you away.""
"Even if I did something bad?""
"You haven't done anything bad.""
Maya looked down.
"Even if I'm not really yours?""
Marcus froze.
"Why would you say that?""
She shrugged.
"I heard Vanessa talking to Uncle Daniel. She said Mommy had kept a secret about me.""
Marcus gently moved the stuffed rabbit aside.
"Listen to me, Maya. Families aren't made by secrets or pieces of paper. They're made by the people who love you, protect you, and stay beside you.""
"Then you're my daddy?""
"Always.""
Maya threw her arms around his neck.
He held her tightly.
For the first time that day, he understood exactly what Elena had been trying to protect.
Not money.
Not property.
Not a name on a document.
A little girl who deserved to grow up without wondering whether she was wanted.
At 10:43 p.m., Marcus received another message.
This time, it came from Vanessa.
*I know you found the medical report. Meet me tomorrow. Come alone. I can explain everything.*
A second message followed.
*And Marcus, if you care about Maya, don't let Patricia show you the second recording.*
Marcus stared at the screen.
He called Patricia immediately.
"What's the second recording?""
Patricia was silent for a moment.
Then she answered.
"Elena recorded one final conversation with Vanessa.""
"What does it reveal?""
Patricia lowered her voice.
"It reveals why Elena changed her will.""
Marcus looked toward Maya's bedroom.
"Send it to me.""
"I can't. It must be played in the presence of the appointed executor.""
"Who is the executor?""
Patricia hesitated.
May you like
Then she said the name.
"Vanessa.""
