Chapter 8: The Woman Who Held the Will
Marcus read the legal document three times.
Vanessa had been appointed temporary executor of Elena's estate during the final months of her illness.
It was a position Elena had granted her when she still believed Vanessa was trustworthy.
But the appointment had been revoked in a later amendment.
That amendment had disappeared.
"Where is the original?"" Marcus asked Patricia.
"That's what we need to establish.""
"Can Vanessa legally access the recording?""
"Not without authorization from the court. But she may have a copy.""
Marcus leaned back.
"Then why is she warning me about it?""
Patricia closed her briefcase.
"Because she knows what it contains.""
The following morning, Vanessa arrived at the house.
She wore a cream-colored coat and carried a large leather folder.
Marcus opened the door but didn't invite her inside.
"You're not supposed to be here.""
"I came to talk.""
"Talk from there.""
Vanessa glanced over his shoulder.
"Is Maya home?""
"She's at school.""
"Good.""
Marcus folded his arms.
"What do you want?""
Vanessa removed a document from her folder.
"I want you to understand that everything I did was for this family.""
Marcus laughed.
"You threw an eight-year-old girl's bicycle into a swimming pool.""
"It was an accident.""
"You unlocked the chain.""
Vanessa looked away.
"Fine. I shouldn't have done that.""
"That's your apology?""
She stepped closer.
"Marcus, you have no idea what I went through.""
"Then tell me.""
Vanessa opened the folder.
Inside were photographs, bank statements, and copies of legal correspondence.
She placed one photograph on the porch table.
It showed Elena sitting in a hospital bed.
Daniel stood beside her.
"Your wife wasn't the innocent person you think she was.""
Marcus didn't touch the photograph.
"Be careful.""
"She was hiding things from you.""
"She was dying.""
"She was manipulating everyone around her.""
Marcus stared at her.
"Why are you doing this?""
Vanessa took a deep breath.
"Because you need to understand that Daniel wasn't the only person involved in the money transfers.""
Marcus said nothing.
Vanessa continued.
"Elena approved some of them.""
"Prove it.""
She produced a bank authorization bearing Elena's signature.
Marcus examined it.
The signature looked genuine.
But the date was three weeks after Elena had entered intensive care.
He looked up.
"Where did you get this?""
"From Daniel.""
"Of course.""
Vanessa's voice softened.
"Marcus, he can help us settle this quietly.""
"Us?""
"We could start over. Forget the trust, forget the recording, and move on.""
Marcus stared at her.
"You want me to forgive you?""
"I want you to understand that I didn't do everything for myself.""
"Then who did you do it for?""
Vanessa hesitated.
"For Maya.""
Marcus shook his head.
"Don't use my daughter's name to excuse what you did.""
Vanessa's expression hardened.
"You're making a mistake.""
"Leave.""
She gathered the documents.
Before walking away, she turned back.
"There's one thing you should know. Elena didn't change her will because she was afraid of me.""
Marcus waited.
Vanessa smiled faintly.
"She changed it because she discovered who Daniel really was.""
Then she walked down the driveway.
That afternoon, Patricia arrived with a court order allowing her to obtain the original medical and estate records.
She also brought a small audio player.
"Elena left instructions that this recording be played only after the executor's appointment had been challenged.""
Marcus sat at the dining table.
Rachel stood beside him.
Patricia pressed play.
A faint rustling sound came through the speakers.
Then Elena's voice.
"Vanessa, I know about the money.""
Vanessa answered immediately.
"You don't understand what happened.""
"I understand that you and Daniel have been moving money from Maya's account.""
"That money was supposed to be used for family expenses.""
"No. It was placed in trust for my daughter.""
Vanessa sighed.
"You're making this sound worse than it is.""
Elena's voice became sharper.
"You forged my signature.""
"I was helping you.""
"You changed my emergency contact information.""
"Because Marcus wasn't always available.""
"You're lying.""
A chair scraped.
Then Vanessa said something that made Marcus sit forward.
"You were going to die, Elena. Someone had to make decisions.""
Elena answered quietly.
"And you thought you should be the one to make them?""
"Someone had to protect Marcus from the truth.""
There was a pause.
Then Elena asked:
"What truth?""
Vanessa laughed.
"That Daniel is Maya's biological father.""
Marcus closed his eyes.
Rachel gripped the edge of the table.
Elena's voice trembled.
"Marcus is her father.""
"Not biologically.""
"He is the man who wanted her, raised her, and loved her.""
"That doesn't change the truth.""
Elena took a breath.
"Why are you doing this?""
Vanessa answered without hesitation.
"Because Daniel promised me that once the trust was transferred, we could start our own life. He said Marcus would never know.""
The recording continued.
Elena spoke again.
"You're planning to take the money and leave?""
"Not immediately.""
"And Maya?""
Vanessa laughed.
"She'll be fine. She'll have Marcus.""
Elena's voice broke.
"She's a little girl. She needs people who love her.""
Vanessa answered coldly.
"She has enough people worrying about her. I'm tired of being second in a house that revolves around a dead woman.""
The recording stopped.
Nobody spoke.
Marcus stared at the audio player.
Patricia pressed a button and displayed the final portion.
There was another recording.
Elena's voice sounded weaker now.
"Vanessa, I need you to listen carefully. I have changed my will. You will no longer have authority over Maya's trust.""
Vanessa's response was immediate.
"You can't do that.""
"I already have.""
"You'll regret this.""
"If anything happens to me, Marcus will receive everything.""
A loud thud followed.
Then the recording ended.
Marcus slowly stood.
"She knew.""
Patricia nodded.
"She discovered the plan and tried to stop it.""
Rachel wiped her eyes.
"Why didn't she tell us?""
"Because she was afraid Daniel would retaliate before she could secure Maya's future.""
Marcus looked at Patricia.
"Can we use this?""
"Yes. It establishes intent and supports the financial evidence.""
"Then we take it to the authorities.""
Patricia nodded.
But before she could answer, a sharp knock came from the front door.
Rachel opened it.
A police officer stood outside.
"Is this the residence of Marcus Hayes?""
"Yes.""
The officer held up a folder.
"Mr. Hayes, we need you to come with us.""
Marcus frowned.
"Why?""
The officer glanced at the documents in his hand.
"Your wife has filed a formal complaint accusing you of threatening her, stealing confidential medical records, and attempting to conceal a child from her legal guardian.""
Marcus went still.
"She's not Maya's legal guardian.""
The officer looked uncomfortable.
"According to the documents submitted this morning, she is.""
Patricia stepped forward.
"Those documents are under legal dispute.""
The officer nodded.
"That may be true, ma'am. But there's another issue.""
He opened the folder.
"Mrs. Hayes has also submitted a temporary custody petition claiming that Mr. Hayes is not Maya's biological father.""
Marcus looked at Patricia.
Then at Rachel.
The officer continued.
"And she has requested an immediate hearing.""
Marcus felt the room spin.
May you like
Vanessa hadn't simply left the marriage.
She was trying to take his daughter.
