Chapter 2: The Key She Tried to Destroy

Marcus had seen Elena's handwriting thousands of times.

It appeared on birthday cards, grocery lists, Christmas presents, and the little notes she used to slip into his briefcase before business trips.

He knew the elegant curve of her capital letters.

The plastic tag was unmistakably hers.

"Where did you find this?"" he asked Maya.

"In the pouch, Daddy.""

Marcus turned toward Vanessa.

"Answer my question.""

Vanessa folded her arms.

"I have no idea what you're talking about.""

"You were standing beside the bicycle.""

"I told you it slipped.""

"Then explain why you look terrified.""

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

"Because you're interrogating me in front of everyone!""

Marcus looked around.

The party guests were pretending not to listen, but nobody had moved far enough away to miss a word.

He slipped the key into his pocket.

"Everybody go home," he announced.

Vanessa stared at him.

"You cannot dismiss my guests.""

"I just did.""

One of the parents quietly gathered her children. Within minutes, the backyard was almost empty.

Vanessa waited until the gate closed.

Then she turned on Marcus.

"You embarrassed me.""

Marcus knelt beside Maya, checking the scratches on her arms.

"Did you get hurt?""

Maya shook her head.

"Did she hurt you when she grabbed you?""

Maya hesitated.

"A little.""

His expression changed.

Vanessa threw up her hands.

"Oh, for heaven's sake! I barely touched her.""

Marcus stood.

"You grabbed her hard enough to leave marks.""

"She was running toward the pool!""

"Because you threw her mother's bicycle into it.""

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"You've been home for five minutes, and suddenly I'm the villain.""

Marcus said nothing.

He picked up the damaged bicycle and carried it toward the garage.

Maya followed him, holding the loose silver bell.

"Can we fix it, Daddy?""

He looked at the bent frame.

"We'll try, sweetheart.""

"Mommy would be sad if she saw it.""

Marcus swallowed.

"Your mother would be proud of how much you love it.""

Maya pressed the bell against her chest.

Behind them, Vanessa watched from the patio.

Her phone vibrated.

She checked the screen and quickly turned away.

A message appeared.

*Did you get the key?*

Vanessa typed with trembling fingers.

*No. He found it.*

The reply came almost immediately.

*Then you need to find the storage unit before he does.*

Vanessa glanced toward the garage.

For the first time that afternoon, she looked genuinely afraid.

That evening, Maya sat at the kitchen table while Marcus carefully examined the bicycle.

He had already called a repair shop. The frame could be salvaged, although the paint would need attention.

Maya held a mug of warm chocolate milk between both hands.

"Daddy?""

"Yes, sweetheart?""

"Why did Mommy put a key inside the bicycle?""

Marcus looked at the silver key.

"I don't know.""

"Was she hiding something?""

He studied the handwriting again.

"Maybe she wanted to keep something safe.""

Maya lowered her eyes.

"Vanessa hates Mommy.""

Marcus stopped cleaning the handlebars.

"Why do you say that?""

"She throws away Mommy's things when you're not home.""

He slowly looked up.

"What things?""

Maya began counting on her fingers.

"Mommy's blue scarf. Her picture from the hallway. The little wooden box from her bedside table.""

Marcus felt something tighten in his chest.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Vanessa said you were already sad. She said I shouldn't make you sadder.""

Marcus pulled out the chair beside Maya.

"Listen to me. You can always tell me when something happens. You never have to protect me from the truth.""

Maya nodded.

Then she whispered, "She also took Mommy's letters.""

Marcus went completely still.

"What letters?""

"The ones in the wooden box. I saw her put them in a black bag.""

"When?""

"Last Thursday.""

Marcus stood and walked to the hallway.

The wooden box had been missing for months. Vanessa had told him that Elena had never kept anything important inside it.

He had believed her.

He returned to the kitchen and took the key from his pocket.

There was a tiny number engraved on its back.

*417.*

Marcus searched his phone for the old paperwork from Elena's estate.

He found a storage facility receipt buried in an email from three years earlier.

The facility was only twenty minutes away.

Unit 417.

His hands began to shake.

Before he could call the facility, Vanessa entered the kitchen.

"Marcus, we need to talk privately.""

"We are talking.""

She looked at Maya.

"Alone.""

Marcus shook his head.

"She stays.""

Vanessa placed a glass of water on the counter.

"You're making a terrible mistake by digging into things that should stay buried.""

Marcus studied her face.

"What exactly should stay buried?""

She leaned toward him.

"Elena was sick. She wasn't thinking clearly. Whatever she left behind could be meaningless.""

Marcus slowly stood.

"How do you know what she left behind?""

Vanessa's lips parted.

For several seconds, she didn't answer.

Then her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Marcus saw the name before she could hide it.

*Daniel.*

Vanessa rejected the call.

Marcus frowned.

"Who's Daniel?""

"Nobody.""

"Then why is nobody calling you at eleven at night?""

Vanessa grabbed her phone.

"You're being paranoid.""

She walked out of the kitchen.

Marcus waited until her footsteps disappeared upstairs.

Then he looked at Maya.

"Sweetheart, I need to ask you something.""

"What?""

"Have you ever seen that man before?""

Maya nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

"Where?""

She pointed toward the front window.

"He came to our house when you were away. Vanessa told me he was Mommy's old friend.""

Marcus felt his stomach drop.

"What did he want?""

Maya looked toward the staircase.

"He asked Vanessa if she'd found the papers.""

Marcus stared at his daughter.

"What papers?""

May you like

Maya's voice became barely audible.

"The papers that say Mommy left everything to me.""
