Chapter 5: The Night Nobody Would Discuss
Rachel sat down slowly.
For years, Marcus had considered his sister the one person who would never lie to him.
She had helped arrange Elena's funeral. She had stayed with Maya during the worst days. She had even encouraged Marcus to start dating again when he believed he would never love anyone after losing his wife.
Now she couldn't look him in the eye.
"What happened that night?"" Marcus asked.
Rachel rubbed her palms against her jeans.
"I didn't want to tell you.""
"That's not an answer.""
"I promised Elena.""
Marcus stared at her.
"She was my wife, Rachel. She was Maya's mother. What could she possibly have told you that I wasn't allowed to know?""
Rachel looked toward Maya.
"Can we talk privately?""
Marcus hesitated.
Then he asked Maya to go upstairs and choose a movie.
When she was gone, he returned to the living room.
Rachel took a deep breath.
"Three days before Elena died, she called me.""
"Why?""
"She was frightened. She said Daniel had been coming to the house when you were traveling.""
Marcus closed his eyes.
"Why didn't she tell me?""
"She tried. But every time she brought up Daniel, you were worried about her treatment, the hospital bills, and the possibility that she might not recover.""
"I would have listened.""
"I know.""
Rachel's voice cracked.
"But she didn't want you to spend what little time you had left arguing with her.""
Marcus sat opposite her.
"Continue.""
Rachel pulled a tissue from the coffee table.
"On the night Elena died, I received a call from her at 9:17 p.m. She told me to come over immediately.""
Marcus remembered that evening.
He had been at the hospital with Maya, who had developed a fever. Elena had insisted that he take their daughter home because she wanted to rest.
Rachel had told him later that she visited Elena briefly.
But apparently, that wasn't the whole story.
"What did she tell you?""
Rachel looked down.
"She said Vanessa was planning to marry you.""
Marcus froze.
"What?""
"She had seen messages between Vanessa and Daniel. They were talking about what would happen after Elena died.""
"Vanessa wasn't even in my life romantically at that point.""
"She was already close to you. She knew you were lonely. Elena was afraid she would use that.""
Marcus stood.
"Why would Vanessa want to marry me?""
Rachel didn't answer.
He already knew.
The house.
The business.
The financial accounts.
And the trust that had been established for Maya.
Rachel continued.
"Elena gave me a sealed envelope. She asked me to keep it somewhere safe until you were ready.""
"Where is it?""
Rachel looked toward her handbag.
"I still have it.""
She reached inside and removed a yellow envelope.
Marcus recognized Elena's handwriting immediately.
But something was strange.
The envelope had already been opened.
He looked at Rachel.
"Who opened this?""
Rachel hesitated.
"Vanessa.""
Marcus's voice became dangerously quiet.
"When?""
"How?""
"She came to my apartment while I was at work. She had a spare key because I once gave her one for emergencies.""
Marcus opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter and a photograph.
The photograph showed Elena sitting in a hospital bed, holding a folder.
Beside her stood Daniel.
On the back, Elena had written:
*He knows where the original will is.*
Marcus unfolded the letter.
Rachel,
If you're reading this, I may no longer be here.
I need you to understand something. Daniel isn't acting alone.
Someone inside our home has been helping him access the accounts.
I believe that person is Vanessa.
I have no proof yet, but I've seen enough to know that she has been passing information to him.
Please protect Marcus from making a decision he might regret. He loves too deeply and trusts too easily.
Most importantly, make sure Maya receives the truth when she is old enough to understand it.
Marcus stopped reading.
He looked up.
"Rachel, why didn't you give me this?""
Rachel began crying harder.
"Because Vanessa threatened me.""
"What?""
"She said she had copies of private messages between me and someone at the hospital. She claimed she could make it look like I had stolen medication from Elena.""
Marcus stared.
"That makes no sense.""
"I know. But I was working at the hospital then. I was terrified of losing my job. She said she would destroy my reputation.""
Rachel wiped her face.
"I thought if I stayed quiet, she would leave us alone.""
Marcus walked to the window.
Outside, Maya was standing near the repaired garden fence, holding Elena's silver bell.
She rang it twice.
The sound was faint through the glass.
Marcus remembered Elena telling him that Maya always rang the bell when she needed courage.
He turned back to Rachel.
"She was a child. You were an adult. We all failed her.""
Rachel nodded.
"I know.""
That afternoon, Marcus contacted Patricia Cole.
She arrived at the house carrying a thick briefcase and a second attorney's file.
They sat at the dining table while Rachel explained what had happened.
Patricia listened carefully.
When Rachel finished, she opened her briefcase.
"There's another reason Elena wanted you to find the storage unit," she said.
Marcus leaned forward.
"What is it?""
"Elena's original will was never filed with the probate court.""
Marcus frowned.
"Why not?""
"Because someone submitted a different version.""
Patricia removed a document.
The signature looked similar to Elena's.
But the date was wrong.
And the witnesses listed were two people Marcus had never met.
"You're telling me someone forged her will?""
"That's what I believe. The original document gives Maya control of the trust at twenty-one. The substituted version gives the trustee broader authority to access the money.""
"Who was named trustee?""
Patricia looked directly at him.
"Vanessa.""
Marcus felt his stomach turn.
"Can we prove it?""
Patricia nodded.
"Elena left a second recording. It's in the storage unit, but I couldn't access it without the original key.""
Marcus looked at her.
"I have the key.""
Patricia smiled sadly.
"Then we're one step closer.""
Before she could continue, the doorbell rang.
Marcus walked to the entrance.
A delivery driver stood outside holding a large white envelope.
"Mr. Hayes?""
"Yes.""
"Someone asked me to deliver this personally.""
Marcus signed for it.
The driver left.
Inside the envelope was a single sheet of paper.
It was a photocopy of a medical report from the hospital where Elena had died.
At the bottom was a handwritten message.
*Your wife didn't die the way you think she did.*
Marcus read it twice.
His fingers went cold.
Rachel stood behind him.
"What is it?""
He handed her the paper.
She stared at it.
Then she whispered something that made Patricia immediately stand up.
"That's impossible.""
Marcus turned.
"Why?""
Rachel looked at him with tears in her eyes.
"Because the night Elena died, the hospital called me first.""
Marcus stared.
"Why would they call you?""
Rachel's voice shook.
"Because someone had already changed the emergency contact information.""
"Who?""
Rachel looked at the report.
May you like
Then she pointed to the signature.
"Vanessa.""
