Chapter 3: What Elena Left Behind

Marcus didn't sleep that night.

At six the following morning, he drove to the storage facility with Elena's key in his jacket pocket.

Maya was still asleep when he left.

He had asked his sister, Rachel, to stay with her until he returned. He didn't want Vanessa alone with his daughter while he investigated what was happening.

The storage facility stood behind a row of warehouses.

A security guard checked Marcus's identification before directing him toward Building C.

Unit 417 was at the end of a narrow corridor.

Marcus inserted the key.

It turned.

The metal door rolled upward with a groan.

Inside were several cardboard boxes, two suitcases, a small wooden desk, and a framed photograph of Elena holding baby Maya.

Marcus stood motionless.

For three years, he had believed Elena's belongings had been divided between their home and a charity organization.

But this room looked as though his wife had prepared it herself.

He stepped inside.

The air smelled faintly of dust and cedar.

On the desk sat a white envelope.

His name was written across it.

*Marcus — Open only when you are ready to know the truth.*

He recognized Elena's handwriting immediately.

His fingers trembled as he opened it.

Inside was a letter.

My love,

If you're reading this, something has happened that I desperately hoped would never happen.

I know you want to believe that everyone who loves Maya has her best interests at heart. Please don't make that mistake.

There are things about my family, my money, and the people around us that I couldn't explain before I became ill.

I have kept the documents here because I don't trust anyone else to protect them.

Most importantly, protect our daughter.

Marcus stopped reading.

His vision blurred.

He sat on the wooden chair and pressed the letter against his forehead.

"Elena," he whispered.

After a moment, he continued.

The blue folder contains the original trust documents. The red folder contains copies of the financial records. And the small recorder contains a conversation I never thought I'd have to preserve.

If someone tries to destroy these things, it means they know what is inside.

Please don't confront anyone until you've listened to the recording.

I love you. I love our little girl.

Always, Elena.

Marcus wiped his eyes.

He searched the desk drawers and found both folders.

The blue folder contained legal documents establishing a trust for Maya.

The red folder contained bank statements, property records, and several suspicious transfers.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Daniel Whitmore.

Marcus recognized the name.

Daniel had been Elena's cousin. He was also a financial adviser who had helped manage some of the family's investments.

But he had disappeared from their lives shortly before Elena died.

Marcus examined the documents more closely.

There were transfers totaling nearly $680,000 from an investment account intended for Maya.

The transfers had started just six months after Elena's diagnosis.

And the authorization signatures were not Elena's.

They were Vanessa's.

Marcus stared at the pages.

Vanessa had married him eighteen months after Elena's death.

He had never known she had been involved with the family's financial affairs before then.

A noise behind him made him turn.

A woman stood at the entrance.

She wore a gray coat and held a leather folder.

"Mr. Hayes?""

Marcus stood immediately.

"Who are you?""

"My name is Patricia Cole. I was Elena's attorney.""

He looked at the documents in his hands.

"Why didn't you tell me about this?""

Patricia stepped inside and closed the door.

"Your wife specifically instructed me to wait until you found the key.""

"Why?""

"Because she believed the person responsible for the missing money would eventually try to destroy the evidence.""

Marcus's voice dropped.

"Are you telling me Vanessa stole from my daughter?""

Patricia didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she opened her folder and placed a photograph on the desk.

It showed Vanessa standing beside Daniel outside a restaurant.

They were holding hands.

The date printed beneath the photograph was two months before Elena died.

Marcus stared at it.

"Where did you get this?""

"Elena hired a private investigator after discovering irregularities in her accounts.""

Marcus felt the room tilt.

"Was Vanessa involved with Daniel before she married me?""

Patricia nodded.

"According to the evidence, yes.""

Marcus clenched his fists.

"Why would Elena keep this from me?""

"She didn't want to destroy your family while she was fighting for her life. She also feared that confronting them would put Maya's inheritance at risk.""

Patricia reached into her folder and removed a small digital recorder.

"She asked me to give you this only after you opened the unit.""

Marcus took it.

"What's on it?""

"Her final conversation with Daniel.""

He pressed the play button.

At first, there was only static.

Then Elena's voice filled the little storage room.

"Daniel, I know about the transfers.""

A man's voice answered.

"You don't understand what you're looking at.""

"I understand perfectly. You and Vanessa have been moving money out of Maya's trust.""

"Elena, listen to me.""

"No. You listen to me. If anything happens to me, Marcus will find out.""

A chair scraped.

Then Daniel spoke again.

"You're dying, Elena. You should be spending your time with your daughter, not threatening people.""

There was a long silence.

Then Elena said something that made Marcus grip the recorder so tightly his knuckles turned white.

"Vanessa promised me she would take care of Maya.""

Daniel laughed.

"Vanessa wants the money, Elena. She doesn't want your daughter.""

The recording ended with a sharp click.

Marcus stared at the recorder.

Patricia quietly placed another document on the desk.

"There's something else you need to see.""

It was a copy of Elena's final legal amendment.

The document named Maya as the sole beneficiary of the trust.

But there was a handwritten note beneath the signature.

If Marcus remarries, his new spouse must never be given access to the trust, its records, or its assets.

Marcus read the sentence twice.

Then a third time.

"She knew," he whispered.

"She suspected," Patricia corrected gently.

"She wanted to make sure Maya was protected.""

Marcus put the documents into his bag.

"Can we stop the transfers?""

"Yes. But we need to move quickly.""

His phone began vibrating.

It was Rachel.

He answered immediately.

"Rachel?""

Her voice was urgent.

"Marcus, you need to come home.""

"What happened?""

"Vanessa came downstairs while Maya was having breakfast. She packed a suitcase and told Maya she was going away.""

Marcus started walking toward the exit.

"Where is Maya?""

"She's with me. But Vanessa just said something strange.""

"What?""

Rachel lowered her voice.

"She told Maya that her father would never see her again.""

Marcus stopped.

Then Rachel added one final sentence.

"Marcus, there's a man outside the house waiting for Vanessa. And Maya says he's the same man who came asking about Mommy's papers.""

Marcus looked down at Elena's letter.

The truth was no longer hidden.

But Vanessa knew he had found it.

And now, she was making her move.
