Chapter 10: The Person We Invited Inside

Vanessa’s words changed the entire room.

“I know exactly who wears it.””

I stared at her.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The only sound was the soft hum of the refrigerator.

The same kitchen where we had celebrated birthdays.

The same kitchen where Maya had done homework at the island.

The same kitchen where someone had apparently been collecting pieces of our lives.

“Who?”” I asked.

Vanessa looked at me.

Her eyes were full of fear.

“Marcus…”

“Who wears that ring?””

She took a breath.

“My brother.””

The words landed harder than I expected.

My brother.

The person I had defended.

The person I had trusted.

The person who had sat at this same island and eaten dinner with us.

I stepped back.

“No.””

Vanessa didn’t argue.

She just looked at the floor.

“His name is Adrian.””

I laughed once.

Not because anything was funny.

Because my brain refused to accept it.

“Adrian?””

Maya looked between us.

“Dad…”

I shook my head.

“No. That doesn’t make sense.””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“I know.””

“You’re telling me my own brother did this?””

“I’m telling you he had access.””

“That’s not the same thing.””

“No,” she whispered.

“It isn’t.””

I walked toward the counter and looked at the documents again.

The fake signature.

The withdrawals.

The photograph.

Everything pointed in one direction.

But my mind kept fighting it.

Because betrayal from a stranger hurts.

Betrayal from family destroys something deeper.

“Why would he do this?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That bothered me.

“Why?””

She looked at me.

“Because Adrian always believed you had everything he deserved.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He told me that once.””

“When?””

“Before we got married.””

I stared at her.

“And you never told me?””

She looked ashamed.

“No.””

The anger rose again.

“How many things have you kept from me?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Too many.””

Maya looked at her.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at my daughter.

“Because I thought keeping you safe meant keeping you away from problems.””

Maya shook her head.

“But you made me part of the problem.””

Vanessa looked like the words physically hurt.

I walked to the window.

Outside, the mansion looked perfect.

Green grass.

Clean driveway.

No signs of anything wrong.

That was the worst part.

Everything looked normal.

My phone buzzed again.

Another message.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

*You finally figured out the obvious.*

My jaw tightened.

I showed everyone.

Vanessa’s face went pale.

“He knows.””

“He?””

She nodded.

“Adrian.””

I stared at the message.

“How would he know we found out?””

Nobody answered.

Then Brielle quietly spoke.

“He’s been watching.””

Everyone turned.

She looked terrified.

“What do you mean?””

She swallowed.

“Two weeks ago, I saw him outside.””

Vanessa stood.

“Brielle.””

“No, Mom.””

Her voice shook.

“I thought I was imagining it.””

I looked at her.

“Where?””

“Near the driveway.””

“When?””

“Late at night.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””

“Because I didn’t know if it was him.””

Vanessa walked closer.

“Brielle, why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because you looked scared all the time.””

That silence was painful.

Because it was true.

I looked back at the documents.

Someone had been inside our home.

Someone had been watching my family.

And now I knew who.

But one question remained.

“How did Adrian get access to my signature?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

I shook my head.

“Stop saying that.””

“I’m telling the truth.””

“Then think.””

She became quiet.

Then slowly said:

“There was one time.””

“What time?””

“The week before the first withdrawal.””

I turned.

“What happened?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“He came here.””

My heart stopped.

“Here?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked toward the hallway.

“He said he wanted to talk to you.””

“Did he?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because you were out.””

I frowned.

“What did he do while he was here?””

Vanessa looked at the office door.

“He said he needed to use the bathroom.””

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone understood.

He didn’t need the bathroom.

He needed access.

I grabbed my keys.

Maya immediately looked at me.

“Dad?””

“I’m going to find him.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Marcus, wait.””

“No.””

“You don’t know what he’ll do.””

I looked at her.

“He already hurt my daughter.””

The words silenced everyone.

I picked up the brown folder.

But before I could leave, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

This time, I answered.

“Who is this?””

A man’s voice came through.

Calm.

Almost amused.

“Hello, Marcus.””

My entire body went still.

Because I knew that voice.

“Adrian?””

May you like

A quiet laugh.

“I was wondering how long it would take.””
