Chapter 5: The Call That Changed Everything

I couldn’t speak.

The kitchen around me became a blur.

The designer bags.

The clothes.

The cash.

Vanessa standing across from me.

All of it faded behind one sentence.

You were not the person who submitted it.

“Mr. Carter?”” Denise asked.

I forced myself to answer.

“Yes. I’m here.””

“Are you alone?””

I looked around.

That question felt strange.

But important.

“No.””

“I understand. I need to ask you some verification questions.””

I stepped away from the island.

Vanessa followed.

“Who is that?””

I raised my hand.

“Not now.””

Her face tightened.

I walked toward the window.

The sunlight hit the glass, but I felt nothing.

“Denise, tell me what happened.””

“We received a withdrawal request from Maya Carter’s education trust.””

“When?””

“The first request was several months ago.””

My stomach dropped.

Several months.

Not days.

Not one mistake.

Months.

“How many withdrawals?””

There was silence.

I knew the answer would hurt.

“Mr. Carter, I can’t discuss details until we complete verification.””

I closed my eyes.

“Please.””

Another pause.

“Multiple withdrawals were processed.””

Behind me, I heard Maya gasp.

She had heard.

I turned.

She looked like the world had just cracked open.

“Dad?””

I walked back toward her.

“Everything is okay.””

But even I didn’t believe those words.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Marcus, you’re letting this woman confuse you.””

I looked at her.

“You knew?””

Her eyes widened.

“No.””

“Then why did you say that?””

“Because you’re panicking.””

“No. I’m finally paying attention.””

Her expression changed.

“You think I stole from your daughter?””

I didn’t answer.

Because the truth was worse.

I thought someone did.

And she was the only person standing near the evidence.

Maya hugged herself.

“Dad…”

I softened my voice.

“Go sit down.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Maya.””

“I want to know.””

I looked at my daughter.

The little girl who used to hide behind my leg when strangers spoke to her.

The girl who once cried because she thought a teacher was disappointed in her.

Now she was standing in the middle of a family disaster asking for the truth.

“You deserve to know,” I admitted.

Vanessa laughed quietly.

Not because anything was funny.

Because she was angry.

“You’re really doing this?””

I turned.

“Doing what?””

“Treating me like a criminal.””

“You haven’t answered a single question.””

Her jaw tightened.

Then she said something I didn’t expect.

“Because if I answer, you won’t believe me anyway.””

The room went quiet.

“What does that mean?””

She looked at the papers.

“It means there are things you don’t know about your own finances.””

I stared at her.

“What things?””

She looked away.

That scared me.

Because Vanessa was not someone who avoided confrontation.

She loved being right.

She loved having control.

Seeing her hesitate meant something was buried underneath.

“Vanessa.””

She whispered:

“You need to ask yourself why your signature was accepted.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“If someone copied your signature…”

She looked directly at me.

“They needed access.””

My heart started beating faster.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying maybe the problem isn’t just who signed.””

Maya looked confused.

“Then what is the problem?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Instead, she walked toward the counter and picked up the brown folder.

I stepped forward.

“Put that down.””

She stopped.

For the first time since I had known her, Vanessa looked truly scared.

“There’s something else inside.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What?””

She opened the folder.

Behind the statements was a sealed envelope.

One I had never seen before.

My name was written on the front.

Not printed.

Handwritten.

My handwriting.

But I knew I had never written it.

Maya whispered:

“Dad…”

I stared at the envelope.

Vanessa’s voice dropped.

“You should open it.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

She swallowed.

“Because whoever created those documents wanted you to find this eventually.””

My fingers moved toward the envelope.

I opened it slowly.

Inside was a single page.

Three sentences.

The first one made my blood run cold.

May you like

The second one made me look at Vanessa.

And the third one revealed a secret I never knew existed.
