Chapter 13: The Man At The Door
The door handle moved again.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
Nobody in the kitchen breathed.
Maya’s fingers tightened around my arm.
I could feel her shaking.
I moved in front of her without thinking.
A father’s instinct doesn’t ask questions.
It just acts.
“Stay behind me,” I whispered.
Vanessa stood frozen.
Brielle grabbed Zoe’s hand and pulled her closer.
The mansion that had always represented safety suddenly felt like a trap.
Another knock.
This time harder.
“Marcus.””
The voice came through the door.
My stomach dropped.
Adrian.
He didn’t sound angry.
That made it worse.
He sounded calm.
Confident.
Like he knew he was already in control.
Vanessa whispered:
“Don’t open it.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because you don’t know what he wants.””
I stared at the door.
“He already took enough.””
The knock came again.
“Marcus,” Adrian called.
“I know you’re there.””
I grabbed my phone.
I was ready to call the police.
But before I could, Adrian spoke again.
“If you call anyone, you’ll never know the truth about Maya’s trust.””
I froze.
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
“He’s manipulating you.””
“I know.””
But the truth was, he knew exactly where to push.
Because this wasn’t about money anymore.
It was about answers.
I opened the door.
“Marcus!””
Vanessa grabbed my arm.
“No.””
I looked back at her.
“I need answers.””
Then I opened it.
Adrian stood on the front porch.
The man I had grown up with.
The man who had shared my childhood.
The man who had once told me he would always stand beside me.
He looked older than I remembered.
Tired.
But not sorry.
That was the part that hurt.
“You look angry,” he said.
I stared at him.
“You broke into my life.””
He tilted his head.
“Did I?””
“You threatened my wife.””
“I gave her choices.””
I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“Choices?””
“Yes.””
“You stole from my daughter.””
His expression changed slightly.
“I didn’t steal.””
“Then what do you call it?””
“Taking back what I helped create.””
I stepped closer.
“You need help.””
He smiled sadly.
“You still don’t understand.””
Behind me, Vanessa spoke.
“Adrian.””
He looked past me.
For the first time, his confidence disappeared.
“You told him.””
Vanessa didn’t move.
“Yes.””
His jaw tightened.
“You shouldn’t have.””
“You threatened my family.””
“You protected your family.””
“No.””
Her voice became stronger.
“I protected your lies.””
Adrian looked at her.
“You think you’re innocent?””
The room went silent.
I turned toward Vanessa.
“What does that mean?””
Adrian laughed quietly.
“There it is.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“The part where everyone finds out nobody here is innocent.””
My anger rose.
“You don’t get to act like a victim.””
“Maybe not.””
He reached into his jacket.
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“Marcus.””
But Adrian pulled out a folder.
Another brown folder.
My eyes narrowed.
“What is that?””
“The original agreement.””
Nobody moved.
The missing page.
The thing we had been searching for.
He held it up.
“You want the truth?””
I stared at him.
“Give it to me.””
He shook his head.
“Not that easy.””
“What do you want?””
He looked around the mansion.
Then at me.
“I want you to admit something.””
“What?””
“That you built your life on everyone else’s sacrifices.””
I laughed.
“You’re insane.””
“Am I?””
He stepped closer.
“Who helped you when you started your company?””
“I worked.””
“Who handled the early finances?””
I said nothing.
“Who introduced you to investors?””
My jaw tightened.
“Adrian.””
“Yes.””
He pointed at himself.
“Me.””
“You helped me.””
“And you forgot.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
His voice cracked.
“You became successful and acted like you did it alone.””
I stared at him.
“That does not justify hurting Maya.””
His expression changed.
For a moment, something like guilt appeared.
Then it disappeared.
“I never wanted her hurt.””
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“Then why?””
He looked down.
“Because I thought if I controlled the money, I could force you to finally listen.””
I shook my head.
“You destroyed your own family.””
His eyes moved toward Maya.
And something changed.
He looked ashamed.
“Maya…”
She stepped back.
“No.””
The single word stopped him.
“You don’t get to say my name like you care.””
Adrian looked away.
That was the first time he looked human.
But it was too late.
I reached for the folder.
He let me take it.
Inside was the original trust agreement.
I opened the first page.
Then the second.
Then I saw it.
A line I had never seen before.
My face went cold.
Because the document revealed something Adrian never expected me to find.
The account had never been controlled by him.
Or Vanessa.
Or even me.
There was a third person listed.
May you like
A person whose name made Vanessa cover her mouth.
Because she knew exactly who it was.
