Chapter 12: The Truth Vanessa Buried
The word hung between us.
“You.””
I stared at Vanessa.
“What does that mean?””
She wiped her tears.
“It means I was afraid of what would happen if you knew everything.””
“Everything about what?””
She looked at Maya.
Then at the folder.
Then finally at me.
“About how this all started.””
I stepped closer.
“Then tell me.””
Vanessa took a deep breath.
“When Adrian first contacted me, he didn’t ask for money.””
“What did he ask for?””
“He asked me to help him get information.””
I felt a cold feeling in my chest.
“Information about me?””
She nodded.
“About your accounts.””
“Why?””
“Because he believed you were hiding something.””
I frowned.
“I wasn’t.””
“I know.””
“Then why help him?””
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“Because I thought he was right about one thing.””
“What?””
“That you trusted people too easily.””
I stared.
“That’s why?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“That was just the beginning.””
I waited.
She looked toward Maya.
“I found out Adrian had been investigating your finances.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because when I confronted him, he threatened me.””
“With what?””
She swallowed.
“With Maya.””
My expression changed.
“He threatened my daughter?””
“He said if I told you, he would make sure the trust disappeared.””
Maya looked frightened.
“But why?””
Vanessa’s voice broke.
“Because Adrian knew something about the account setup.””
I looked at the documents.
“The signature.””
She nodded.
“He knew exactly how the system worked.””
“Because he created it.””
“Yes.””
The pieces connected.
Slowly.
Painfully.
“But that still doesn’t explain why you took the money.””
Vanessa nodded.
“I know.””
She looked at Maya.
“I was wrong.””
Maya said nothing.
“I thought I could buy time.””
“How?””
“By paying him.””
I closed my eyes.
“So the withdrawals…”
“Were to keep him away.””
“No.””
I opened my eyes.
“You took from Maya to pay a man who was threatening us.””
Vanessa cried quietly.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
But it was better than another lie.
I walked back to the counter.
The brown folder sat there between us.
A symbol of everything we failed to see.
My phone buzzed.
A new message.
This time from Adrian.
*Ask her about the missing page.*
I looked at the folder.
“Missing page?””
Vanessa froze.
I noticed immediately.
“What page?””
She didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
She looked terrified.
“There was a page.””
“What page?””
“The original trust agreement.””
“Where is it?””
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
She shook her head.
“I thought Adrian took it.””
My mind raced.
“If he took it, why?””
Vanessa looked at Maya.
“Because it proves who really controls the account.””
Nobody moved.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa whispered:
“The trust was never supposed to have two signatures.””
I stared.
“What?””
“There was only supposed to be one.””
“Whose?””
She looked at me.
“Yours.””
My heart stopped.
“Then why is there a second signature?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Because someone changed the agreement.””
I looked at the fake authorization.
The false signature.
The missing page.
The threats.
Everything was connected.
But one thing still didn’t make sense.
“If Adrian changed the agreement…”
I looked at Vanessa.
“How did he get your signature too?””
Her face went pale.
And before she could answer, someone knocked on the front door.
Three slow knocks.
Everyone froze.
The sound traveled through the mansion.
Another knock.
Maya grabbed my arm.
“Dad…”
I looked toward the entrance.
Nobody was supposed to be here.
Not now.
Not after everything.
The door handle slowly moved.
May you like
And Vanessa whispered the words I never wanted to hear.
“He found us.””
