Chapter 8: The Stranger In Our House
I stared at the photograph.
A picture taken inside my own home.
That was the part I couldn’t get past.
Not the money.
Not the signature.
Not even the lies.
Someone had been close enough to walk into my office and photograph my private documents.
Someone had been watching us.
“When was this taken?”” I asked.
Vanessa looked at the screen.
“Three months ago.””
“Three months?””
She nodded.
My jaw tightened.
“That means this person was already inside our lives.””
Nobody spoke.
Maya looked frightened.
“Dad…”
I immediately turned toward her.
“Stay with me.””
She nodded.
But I could see the fear in her eyes.
A child should never have to wonder if her own home is safe.
I looked back at Vanessa.
“Why didn’t you tell me someone was watching us?””
She swallowed.
“Because I thought I could fix it.””
“You already said that.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice became sharper.
“You keep saying you were protecting us, but every decision you made put Maya at risk.””
Vanessa looked down.
“I know.””
That answer surprised me.
Because there was no argument behind it.
No defense.
Just regret.
Brielle stepped closer.
“Marcus…”
I looked at her.
“Do you know who it is?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Did you ever see anyone?””
“No.””
“Did your mother?””
Brielle looked at Vanessa.
“I don’t think so.””
I picked up the phone again.
The photo showed only a small part of the office.
The edge of my desk.
A chair.
A hand near the documents.
Nothing else.
But there was one detail.
A ring.
A silver ring on the person’s finger.
Vanessa noticed me staring.
“What?””
I zoomed in.
“Does this mean anything to you?””
She looked closer.
Her face changed.
Just for a second.
But I saw it.
“You recognize it.””
“No.””
“You do.””
Vanessa looked away.
“I’m not sure.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She stood.
“I said I’m not sure.””
Her voice rose.
For the first time, her fear turned into frustration.
“You think this is easy for me?””
“No.””
“Do you think I wanted any of this?””
“No.””
“Then stop looking at me like I’m the only person who did something wrong.””
The words stopped me.
Because she was right about one thing.
Someone else was involved.
Someone who had manipulated her.
Someone who had access.
But that didn’t change the fact that Maya was hurt.
I looked at my daughter.
“Maya, can you give us a minute?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
I paused.
“I need to know.””
Her voice was quiet.
“I’ve spent weeks not knowing.””
That broke something inside me.
I walked over and hugged her.
“I’m sorry.””
She held onto me.
“I just wanted my dad to know.””
“I know.””
Behind us, Vanessa sat back down.
“I need to tell you something else.””
I turned.
“What?””
She looked nervous.
“The person who threatened me knew something about Marcus.””
My eyebrows lowered.
“What about me?””
She looked at the envelope.
“Something from before we were married.””
The kitchen went silent.
“What does that mean?””
“I don’t know.””
“You keep saying you don’t know.””
“Because I don’t.””
She pointed at the paper.
“But whoever sent this wanted me to believe you were hiding something.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“They kept saying you had secrets.””
I felt anger rise.
“You believed them?””
“No.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I was scared that if they were right…”
She stopped.
“If they were right about what?””
Vanessa looked toward Maya.
Then at me.
“That you would lose everything.””
The words made no sense.
I stepped closer.
“Lose everything because of what?””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Then my phone buzzed.
Everyone looked at it.
Unknown number.
A message.
My hands went cold before I even opened it.
One sentence.
*Ask your wife why she never told you about the night Maya’s trust was created.*
I looked up slowly.
Vanessa was staring at my phone.
May you like
Her face had lost all color.
Because she knew exactly what night they were talking about.
