Chapter 15: The Person Nobody Suspected
For one second, nobody moved.
Nobody even looked toward the window.
Because sometimes your mind protects you from fear.
Sometimes it refuses to believe what your eyes are about to see.
I slowly turned.
The kitchen window reflected the room behind us.
The marble island.
The scattered documents.
The family standing together.
And in the corner of the reflection…
A person.
Watching.
I spun around.
The kitchen was empty.
My heart raced.
“Where are you?””
No answer.
Vanessa grabbed Maya’s hand.
Brielle and Zoe moved closer.
Adrian looked toward the hallway.
“Impossible.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He stared at the window.
“That picture was taken moments ago.””
I looked at my phone.
He was right.
The image timestamp was current.
Someone had been here.
Inside our home.
Again.
I grabbed the security tablet from the counter.
The mansion cameras appeared on the screen.
Front entrance.
Backyard.
Hallway.
Kitchen.
I opened the recording.
Nothing.
No movement.
No person.
No explanation.
Then Maya pointed.
“Dad.””
She touched the screen.
“Go back.””
I rewound.
The kitchen camera showed us standing around the island.
Then the image glitched.
Just for a second.
A shadow crossed the frame.
I paused.
Zoomed in.
The figure was carrying something.
A folder.
A brown folder.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She pointed at the screen.
“That folder.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What about it?””
“That’s not the one Adrian brought.””
I froze.
Because she was right.
The folder on the screen had a different mark.
A small symbol in the corner.
A symbol I recognized.
My old company logo.
Before I sold the company.
Before I walked away.
Before everything changed.
I looked at Adrian.
“You know that logo?””
His face went pale.
“Yes.””
“Who used it?””
He didn’t answer.
“Adrian.””
His voice dropped.
“Someone from our old company.””
The room became silent.
Someone else.
Not Adrian.
Not Vanessa.
Someone who had been connected to us for years.
Someone who knew our finances.
Someone who knew our history.
My phone buzzed again.
Another message.
*Ask him about the employee who disappeared.*
I looked at Adrian.
“Who disappeared?””
He didn’t respond.
That scared me.
“Who?””
His face changed.
A memory.
A realization.
“Marcus…”
“Who?””
He whispered:
“Daniel.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But Adrian looked terrified.
“Who is Daniel?””
Adrian sat down slowly.
“Someone who worked with us when we started.””
“And?””
“He handled financial records.””
My stomach dropped.
“Could he access the accounts?””
“Yes.””
“Could he copy signatures?””
Adrian looked at the documents.
“Yes.””
“Could he fake approvals?””
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.””
Everything clicked.
The person behind the chaos wasn’t the loudest person in the room.
It wasn’t the person making threats.
It was the person hiding.
The person nobody thought about.
The person who had watched us fight.
I looked at the security footage again.
The figure in the kitchen.
The folder.
The shadow.
“Where is Daniel now?””
Adrian looked at me.
“That’s the problem.””
“What?””
“He died.””
Nobody spoke.
The words didn’t make sense.
“Died when?””
“Three years ago.””
I stared.
Three years.
Before the withdrawals.
Before the messages.
Before everything.
“That’s impossible.””
Adrian shook his head.
“I know.””
Maya looked at the screen.
“Dad.””
I turned.
She pointed.
The camera footage had changed.
The shadow was gone.
But something remained on the marble island.
A piece of paper.
Someone had left it there.
I walked closer.
Slowly.
Carefully.
I picked it up.
Only one sentence was written.
*You looked for the wrong person.*
Underneath was a signature.
Not Adrian.
Not Vanessa.
Not mine.
A name I had never expected.
A name Maya whispered before I could say it.
Because she recognized it.
“Mom…”
I looked at my daughter.
Her face was frozen.
“Your mother?””
Maya nodded.
“My real mom.””
The room went silent.
Because Maya’s mother had been gone for years.
Everyone believed she was gone forever.
But the signature on the paper proved one thing.
May you like
She had never been as far away as we thought.
And she had been watching us the entire time.
