Chapter 6: The Secret Inside The Envelope

The paper felt heavier than it should have.

It was just one page.

One ordinary piece of paper.

But my hands felt like they were holding something dangerous.

Maya stood beside me.

Vanessa stood across from us.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

I looked down.

The message was short.

Too short.

That made it worse.

*Marcus,*

*If you are reading this, someone has already taken what belongs to Maya.*

My eyes stopped.

I read it again.

Someone has already taken what belongs to Maya.

I looked up.

Vanessa was watching my face.

“You know what this is?”” I asked.

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“Vanessa.””

She looked away.

“I’ve seen it before.””

Maya stepped back.

“You have?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

My voice became quiet.

“When?””

She didn’t respond.

“When?””

“Before today.””

The confession landed like a punch.

I placed the paper on the counter.

“You saw this before?””

“I saw the envelope.””

“You saw my name on it?””

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

Her silence answered.

Maya’s eyes filled again.

“I trusted you.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Maya…”

“No.””

My daughter shook her head.

“You always told me family protects each other.””

The pain in her voice was worse than anger.

Because she still wanted to believe.

Vanessa looked away.

“I was trying to fix it.””

I stepped closer.

“Fix what?””

She didn’t answer.

“Fix what, Vanessa?””

Her shoulders dropped.

“I thought I could handle it.””

There it was.

The sentence people say when they know they crossed a line.

“What did you think you could handle?””

She looked at the documents.

“The money.””

The room went silent.

Maya covered her mouth.

I felt something break inside.

Not rage.

Something deeper.

Disappointment.

“You took it.””

Vanessa shook her head quickly.

“No.””

“But you knew.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She sat down slowly.

For the first time, she looked exhausted.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Just tired.

“Because I thought I could replace it before anyone noticed.””

Maya stared at her.

“Why would you even take it?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“I was trying to solve a problem.””

“What problem?””

She didn’t answer.

I slammed my hand against the counter.

“Stop protecting whatever this is.””

Vanessa looked up.

“I was protecting my daughters.””

The words froze me.

Brielle and Zoe.

Of course.

The clothes.

The shopping.

The money.

But something still didn’t make sense.

“You spent Maya’s college money on them?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

She looked at the envelope.

“That money wasn’t just for clothes.””

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa’s eyes moved toward Maya.

“I was trying to stop something from happening.””

Maya looked confused.

“What?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

A sound came from upstairs.

A door closing.

Everyone turned.

Brielle stood at the top of the staircase.

She had been listening.

Her face was pale.

“Mom?””

Vanessa froze.

Brielle slowly walked down.

“I didn’t know you were going to tell them.””

My eyes moved between them.

“Tell us what?””

Brielle reached the bottom step.

She looked at Maya.

Then at me.

“I wasn’t supposed to say anything.””

My heart tightened.

“Say what?””

Brielle looked terrified.

Not guilty.

Terrified.

“Dad…”

She corrected herself quickly.

“Marcus…”

Nobody spoke.

Then she whispered:

“The money wasn’t taken for us.””

Vanessa stood.

“Brielle, don’t.””

But Brielle kept going.

“It was taken because someone was threatening Mom.””

My eyes moved to Vanessa.

“What did you just say?””

Brielle looked toward the folder.

“Someone knew about the account.””

The kitchen went completely still.

“Who?”” I asked.

Brielle’s lips trembled.

She looked at the envelope.

Then at the signature documents.

May you like

And whispered:

“The same person who knew how to copy your signature.””
