Chapter 10: The Woman Who Tried to Take My Brother

“Absolutely not.””

Daniel planted himself between Lucas's hospital bed and the doorway.

Dr. Bennett held up both hands.

“Mr. Reed, nobody is removing Lucas until we verify the request. But I need you to understand that the paperwork was submitted through an apparently authorized guardian.””

“Vanessa Morgan is not this boy's mother.””

Sarah Collins examined the transfer form again.

“According to these records, she's listed as an emergency custodian under a confidential placement agreement.””

Elena gripped the bedrail.

“She has no legal right to him. Neither does Michael. That arrangement was fraudulent from the beginning.””

Lucas sat rigidly beneath his blanket, staring at the adults.

“What's happening?”” he asked.

Maya moved closer to him.

“Nobody's taking you anywhere.””

“You don't know that.””

She wanted to promise him that everything would be fine, but she remembered how many promises the adults in her life had broken.

So instead, she took his hand.

“I won't let you face this alone.””

Lucas squeezed her fingers.

Daniel turned to Sarah.

“Call the hospital's legal department. Contact child protective services. And preserve every document connected to this transfer.””

Sarah nodded.

“I'm already making those calls.””

“Good. Because somebody has been falsifying records for six years, and I'm done letting them get away with it.””

His phone vibrated.

A message from Vanessa appeared.

Bring Elena home. Come alone. If you involve the police, Lucas will disappear again.

Daniel read it twice.

Then he showed it to Elena.

Her face drained of color.

“She knows we're here.””

“Of course she knows,” Daniel said.

“She submitted the transfer request.””

Elena shook her head.

“You don't understand how far she'll go.””

Daniel looked at her coldly.

“Then explain it.””

Before Elena could answer, Lucas spoke.

“Vanessa isn't the person I'm afraid of.””

Everyone turned toward him.

Lucas pulled his knees toward his chest.

“When I was younger, my adoptive father used to get calls from a man named Richard. Every time Richard called, my father would send me to my room. Once, I heard them arguing about money.””

“What did you hear?”” Daniel asked gently.

Lucas swallowed.

“Richard said I was supposed to stay hidden until I turned thirteen. He said that after that, the money would be released.””

Elena covered her mouth.

“The trust,” she whispered.

Lucas nodded.

“My adoptive father told him he didn't want to keep lying to me. Richard said he'd make sure our family lost everything if he didn't cooperate.””

Daniel's hands curled into fists.

“Where is your adoptive father now?””

“Dead.””

The single word silenced the room.

Lucas stared at the blanket.

“He died in a car accident when I was ten. My adoptive mother said it was an accident, but she never talked about it afterward. She moved us to another town, and then she died last year.””

Maya's eyes filled with tears.

Lucas continued.

“After that, I found some papers in her closet. That's how I learned I was adopted. I tried contacting the lawyer named in the documents, but he wouldn't speak to me.””

He reached beneath his pillow and pulled out another folded page.

“This is the last thing my adoptive mother wrote.””

Daniel accepted it carefully.

The note was short.

Lucas, if you ever discover who your biological parents are, remember this: you were never unwanted. I loved you from the moment they placed you in my arms. I was told that keeping you was the only way to save your life.

Elena began to sob.

Lucas looked at her.

“Did you want me?””

Elena rushed to the bedside, then stopped herself before touching him.

“More than anything in the world.””

“Then why didn't you come?””

“Because I was told you were dead.””

Lucas looked away.

Elena's tears fell onto her hands.

“I searched for you. I followed every lead I could find. But the records had been changed, and the people who knew the truth had disappeared.””

“Did you stop looking?””

“No.””

“Even when you had Maya?””

Elena shook her head.

“Never.””

Lucas studied her face, searching for the lie.

Finally, he whispered, “I don't know if I can believe you.””

Elena nodded through her tears.

“You don't have to believe me today. I'll spend the rest of my life proving it.””

Maya leaned against her brother's shoulder.

For the first time, Lucas didn't pull away.

Then Sarah returned from the hallway, carrying a clipboard.

“The hospital's legal department has placed an immediate hold on the transfer. We've also contacted the authorities.””

Daniel exhaled.

“Thank you.””

“But there's another problem,” Sarah continued.

“The person who submitted the request included a statement alleging that Elena Reed is an impostor who has abducted a minor.””

Elena went pale.

“What?””

Sarah showed them the attached affidavit.

It claimed Elena had falsely identified herself as Lucas's biological mother and had attempted to remove him from medical care.

At the bottom was a signature.

*Daniel Reed.*

Daniel stared at it.

“I never signed this.””

“I know,” Sarah replied.

“But whoever submitted it included a copy of your driver's license.””

Maya's stomach tightened.

“Can they take Lucas away because of a piece of paper?””

“Not without verification,” Sarah said.

“But the allegations are serious enough that the authorities will investigate.””

Daniel looked at Elena.

“Who has access to my identification?””

She didn't answer.

He thought of Vanessa. The business files. The forged signatures. The one-way ticket.

Then he remembered something else.

Three months earlier, Vanessa had asked him to scan his passport and driver's license for what she described as a joint investment application.

He had emailed the documents without a second thought.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“She has everything she needs.””

His phone rang.

This time, the caller was his attorney, Rebecca Shaw.

He answered immediately.

“Rebecca, we have a situation.””

“I know,” she replied.

“I just received an anonymous package containing copies of the trust agreement and your alleged authorization for Lucas's transfer.””

Daniel looked at the affidavit.

“Someone is framing me.””

“I suspect so. But there's something you need to know. The package also contains a court filing scheduled to be submitted tomorrow morning.””

“What filing?””

“A petition to suspend your parental rights over Maya and freeze the children's trust pending an investigation into financial fraud.””

Daniel's blood ran cold.

“Who filed it?””

“Richard Hawthorne.””

Elena sank into a chair.

“He's trying to take both children.””

Rebecca continued, “And he's named Vanessa as the proposed temporary guardian.””

Daniel looked toward the hospital door.

“Where is Vanessa now?””

“I don't know. But she left a message for my office ten minutes ago.””

“What did she say?””

Rebecca paused.

“She said she would withdraw the petition if you agreed to sign over control of your company and the trust.””

Daniel stared at Elena.

His wife had tried to exclude Maya from a vacation. She had secretly transferred money, bought a one-way ticket, and arranged to move Lucas.

Now she was demanding control over everything Daniel had spent his life building.

But the most frightening part wasn't the money.

It was the fact that Vanessa had been willing to use two children as bargaining chips.

“Tell her no,” Daniel said.

“Daniel, I need you to understand that refusing could trigger an immediate court hearing.””

“Tell her no.””

He ended the call.

Elena stood.

“Daniel, perhaps we should consider—”

“No.””

“If signing something temporarily would keep the children safe—”

“No.”” He turned toward her.

“I'm not giving another person the power to decide whether our children deserve a home.””

Lucas looked up.

“Our children?””

Daniel's expression softened.

“Yes, son.””

Lucas swallowed hard.

Daniel approached the bed and held out his hand.

“I know you have every reason to doubt me. But I am your father, and I'm going to fight for you.””

Lucas stared at the offered hand.

Then he took it.

A nurse entered and explained that the hospital would keep Lucas under supervision until the legal situation was clarified.

Daniel promised to return as soon as possible.

Maya hugged her brother before leaving.

“Don't let anyone convince you that you're alone,” she whispered.

Lucas nodded.

As Daniel and Elena walked toward the elevator, Elena's phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

She answered.

A man's voice spoke softly.

“You should have stayed dead.””

Elena stopped walking.

Daniel turned.

“Who is this?””

The caller ignored him.

“You've made a terrible mistake coming back. The boy was supposed to remain hidden. The girl was supposed to inherit nothing. And now you've put everyone in danger.””

Elena's face drained of color.

“Richard?””

The man laughed.

“You still recognize my voice. That's touching.””

Daniel grabbed the phone.

“If you come near my children, I'll destroy you.””

“You can't destroy what you can't prove.””

The line went dead.

Elena leaned against the wall, trembling.

Daniel held her shoulders.

“What did he mean when he said Maya was supposed to inherit nothing?””

Elena looked at him.

“I think we've misunderstood the trust.””

Before she could explain, Sarah came running down the corridor.

“Mr. Reed! Mrs. Reed!””

Daniel turned.

“What's happened?””

Sarah held up a document.

“Lucas's legal guardian just withdrew the transfer request.””

Daniel exhaled.

“Good.””

Sarah shook her head.

“There's a condition attached. Lucas will be released only to the person named in a newly discovered guardianship document.””

“Who?””

Sarah looked at Elena.

Then at Daniel.

“The document names Maya Reed as Lucas's legal guardian.””

Daniel stared at her.

May you like

Maya was twelve years old.

And someone had just placed her brother's future in her hands.
