Chapter 11: The Guardian Who Was Twelve

For several seconds, Daniel thought he had misunderstood.

“Maya is twelve,” he said.

“She cannot be Lucas's legal guardian.””

Sarah Collins held the document against her clipboard.

“That's why the hospital has not acted on it. The paperwork is unusual, and we have serious concerns about its validity.””

Elena took the page.

Her eyes moved across the text.

Then she whispered, “This isn't a normal guardianship document.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What is it?””

“A protective designation attached to my father's trust. He established it before Maya was born.””

Sarah frowned.

“Why would a trust name a child as another child's guardian?””

“It doesn't make her a legal guardian in the ordinary sense,” Elena explained.

“It means the trustee must consult Maya before transferring control of the inheritance if something happens to both parents.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Why would my daughter have any say in a financial arrangement?””

“Because my father believed the children were the only people who could never be bought.””

The words chilled him.

Elena continued.

“He wanted their interests protected from anyone who might benefit financially from separating them. The designation was supposed to prevent an outsider from gaining control of the trust.””

Sarah studied the document.

“Then why does it say Maya has authority to approve Lucas's release?””

“Because someone has altered the original wording.””

Daniel took the page.

At the bottom, beside the trustee's signature, was a second signature.

*MAYA REED.*

It looked disturbingly authentic.

But Maya had never signed a legal document like this in her life.

“Someone forged her signature,” Daniel said.

Sarah nodded.

“We'll need to notify the hospital's legal department immediately.””

Elena's phone rang again.

Rebecca Shaw.

She answered on speaker.

“I've reviewed the guardianship document,” Rebecca said.

“It's a manipulated version of an older trust provision. The original gives Maya a future beneficiary consultation right, not legal authority over Lucas.””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“So someone has changed the document to make it look like Maya is responsible for her brother.””

“Exactly. If anything happens to Lucas while he's under this arrangement, the person who forged it could claim Maya failed to protect him.””

Elena closed her eyes.

“Richard.””

“Possibly,” Rebecca replied.

“But the digital metadata suggests the file was created using a computer associated with your home network.””

Daniel went still.

“Which computer?””

Rebecca paused.

“Your wife's laptop.””

Nobody spoke.

Daniel stared at the hospital wall.

Vanessa had used their home, their accounts, and their trust to build a case against them. She had even forged a signature in the name of a twelve-year-old girl.

“What do we do now?”” he asked.

“First, we preserve every document and avoid contacting Vanessa directly. Second, I need you and Elena to come to my office tomorrow morning. We have to establish the children's identities, challenge the fraudulent guardianship, and seek an emergency order protecting the trust.””

“What about Lucas?””

“The hospital can keep him under temporary supervision. I'll contact their legal department now.””

Daniel ended the call.

He looked at Elena.

“Go home with Maya. I'll stay with Lucas tonight.””

Elena shook her head.

“You shouldn't be alone.””

“I'm not going to be alone. The hospital has security, and Rebecca will arrange legal support.””

“Daniel—”

“Please.””

She stopped.

For the first time since her return, she seemed to understand that he needed space to process what had happened.

Elena reached for his hand.

“I know you don't trust me.””

“I don't know what I trust anymore.””

She nodded.

“That's fair.””

He looked at her.

“But I believe you love the children.””

Elena's eyes filled.

“I do.””

“Then help me protect them. Whatever happened between us, whatever you chose to hide, the children come first.””

“They always have.””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Then prove it.””

When Daniel returned home the following morning, the house looked unnaturally quiet.

The cake Michael had brought remained on the entryway table. Nobody had touched it. Blue icing had begun to slide down the white frosting, and the words HAPPY 13TH BIRTHDAY, MAYA looked almost grotesque.

Maya sat at the kitchen island with Elena.

Between them lay the original letter from her grandfather, the hospital documents, and the photograph of the twins as newborns.

Maya looked up when Daniel entered.

“Is Lucas okay?””

“He's safe. Rebecca is working with the hospital to make sure nobody can move him without proper authorization.””

“Can I see him today?””

“Yes.””

Maya exhaled.

Then she looked at the papers.

“Dad, why would someone make me his guardian?””

“Because they wanted to use you.””

“Use me for what?””

Daniel sat beside her.

“To make us look responsible for whatever happens to Lucas. If the paperwork is fraudulent, the person who created it may be trying to confuse the authorities.””

Maya frowned.

“So they want me to look like the bad guy?””

“Exactly.””

She stared at the photograph of herself as a baby.

“Why does everyone keep trying to make us disappear?””

Daniel didn't have an answer.

Elena reached across the table.

“Because someone believes that if they control the truth, they control the money.””

Maya looked at her mother.

“Is the money really worth all this?””

“No,” Elena said immediately.

“Not for one second.””

“Then why didn't you come back sooner?””

Elena's face crumpled.

Daniel started to intervene, but Elena raised a hand.

“Let me answer.””

She moved her chair closer to Maya.

“When I disappeared, I believed I was protecting you. Every time I got close to finding your brother, someone threatened to expose your location. I thought if I stayed away, you would remain safe.””

Maya's eyes filled.

“But I wasn't safe. Vanessa was mean to me. I thought you were dead. I thought Dad might get tired of me.””

Daniel turned sharply.

“You thought what?””

Maya looked down.

“Sometimes I wondered whether you would be happier if you didn't have to worry about me.””

Daniel pulled her into his arms.

“Never. Do you understand? Never.””

Maya began to cry.

“I didn't want to be difficult.””

“You were a child who needed her parents. That was never difficult.””

Elena covered her mouth, sobbing.

Maya pulled away from Daniel and looked at her mother.

“I don't know how to forgive you yet.””

Elena nodded.

“You don't have to.””

“But I want you to stay.””

Elena's eyes widened.

“Are you sure?””

Maya swallowed.

“I want to know you. I want to hear the stories you remember about me. I want you to tell me what my brother was like when he was a baby.””

Elena reached for her hand.

“I can do that.””

“But no more secrets.””

“No more secrets,” Elena promised.

The doorbell rang.

Daniel rose immediately.

Through the front window, he saw two police officers standing on the porch.

He opened the door.

“Mr. Reed?”” the taller officer asked.

“We're here to speak with you about a complaint filed by Vanessa Morgan.””

Daniel's stomach tightened.

“What complaint?””

The officer checked his notes.

“Ms. Morgan alleges that you and Elena Reed have conspired to abduct a minor, falsify medical records, and unlawfully access a protected trust.””

Maya stood behind her father.

“That's not true!””

The officer looked at her.

“Is this Maya Reed?””

“Yes.””

He exchanged a glance with his partner.

“Ms. Morgan has also requested emergency protection for you, claiming your father may be emotionally unstable and that your mother has a history of identity fraud.””

Daniel felt the familiar surge of anger.

Then he remembered Rebecca's instructions.

He stepped aside.

“Come in. My attorney is on her way, and we have documents that may clarify what's happening.””

The officers entered.

Elena handed them the original birth records and the forged transfer documents.

They examined the pages carefully.

One officer asked, “Where is Vanessa Morgan now?””

Daniel shook his head.

“She left yesterday. I haven't heard from her since.””

The taller officer made a note.

“Do you know whether she has access to any other properties or financial accounts?””

Daniel thought of the one-way ticket to Zurich.

“I believe she was planning to leave the country.””

The officer's expression changed.

“Did she purchase a ticket?””

“Yes.””

“Do you have proof?””

Daniel showed him the photograph of the ticket fragment and the booking information.

The officer studied it, then stepped into the hallway to make a call.

A few minutes later, he returned.

“We need to speak with Ms. Morgan as soon as possible.””

“Why?”” Daniel asked.

The officer hesitated.

“Because she was reported missing from her hotel this morning.””

Elena went pale.

“Missing?””

“She checked in last night under her maiden name. Her room was found empty, and hotel staff reported that several documents had been left behind.””

Daniel looked at the officer.

“Was anyone else seen with her?””

“Yes. A man matching the description of Michael Reed.””

Maya gripped the edge of the kitchen island.

“Uncle Michael?””

The officer nodded.

“According to the hotel receptionist, the two left together shortly after midnight.””

Daniel felt the room close around him.

Michael had vanished.

Vanessa had vanished.

And somewhere in the middle of it all, Lucas remained in a hospital room, unaware that the people who had stolen his identity might be preparing to take him again.

That afternoon, Daniel and Elena returned to St. Agnes.

Lucas was sitting by the window when Maya entered.

“You came back,” he said.

“Of course.””

She sat beside him.

“Dad says the hospital won't let anyone move you without checking the documents.””

Lucas nodded.

“Sarah told me.””

He hesitated.

“Did you find out why they took me?””

Maya glanced at her parents.

Elena stepped forward.

“We know some of the reasons. But there are still things we don't understand.””

Lucas stared at the blanket.

“My adoptive mother used to tell me I was special. I thought she meant I was lucky to have been adopted.””

He looked up.

“Now I wonder whether she meant something else.””

Daniel sat on the other side of the bed.

“You were never a bargaining chip to me, Lucas. Neither was Maya.””

Lucas studied his face.

“Then why did someone hide me?””

“Because they wanted control over your inheritance.””

Lucas frowned.

“My inheritance?””

Elena explained the trust, carefully, without overwhelming him with every detail.

When she finished, Lucas looked stunned.

“So someone stole money from me before I even knew I existed?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Lucas leaned back against the pillows.

“That's messed up.””

Despite everything, Maya laughed.

“That's one way to put it.””

Lucas smiled faintly.

Then his expression grew serious.

“There's something else.””

He reached beneath his mattress and pulled out a small plastic envelope.

Inside was a hospital identification bracelet from the day he was born.

Maya leaned closer.

The bracelet bore his original name.

Not Lucas.

*NOAH DANIEL REED.*

Daniel stared at the name.

“Your middle name was supposed to be Daniel.””

Elena nodded through her tears.

“We chose it together.””

Noah turned the bracelet over.

A handwritten number appeared on the back.

*214.*

“The room number,” Maya whispered.

Elena shook her head.

“No. That number was written on the bracelet before you were brought here.””

Daniel looked at the nurse's notes attached to the envelope.

There was a reference to a second medical facility.

A place called *St. Agnes Children's Annex*.

The same hospital network that had treated Elena before her disappearance.

Daniel showed the page to Dr. Bennett.

The doctor read it carefully.

“That's an old facility. It closed more than ten years ago.””

“Could records still exist?”” Daniel asked.

“Possibly. Archived medical records are sometimes retained by the hospital system.””

Elena's face changed.

“Then we need to find them.””

Dr. Bennett looked at her.

“Why?””

Elena pointed to the final line on the document.

A note had been written in faded ink:

Infant B to be released only upon confirmation of maternal identity and authorization from R. Hawthorne.

Daniel stared at the words.

The records might reveal who had taken their son.

But Elena was staring at something else.

The initials at the end.

R. Hawthorne.

She whispered, “Richard didn't just arrange the disappearance.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What else did he do?””

May you like

Elena lifted her eyes.

“He was at the hospital before either of our children was born.””
